I'm a care worker and my boss has given is all letters to prove we're legit to be out and about. Am wondering if there's new measures coming? I've seen plenty out and about today when driving home.

What are you talking about @BamboozledandBefuddled - supermarkets have blocked off wine and chocolate? Where?

I think posters keep advising of what is happening in other countries is adding to the confusion as somebody else reads this and then reposts as if it is what's happening here (UK) hence people getting the idea you can't go out at all and getting annoyed at others who are
Doing this but clearly within agreed guidelines.

You can buy formula direct from aptamil and cow and gate, two packs per week, extra 3.95 delivery. Might take the milk worry out of it.

FrenchyQ · 25/03/2020 19:40

My work gave me a letter too, i'll put it in a plastic pocket as don't have a laminator (and its 4 pages long anyway)

MiracletoCome · 25/03/2020 19:45

I’m not a key worker so I won’t expect a letter then, I guess that is because at some point non key worker jobs may be closed

wobytide · 25/03/2020 19:48

@ListeningQuietly don't shoot the messenger just what I've heard from the same source who gave me the school lockdown date. Who knows how it will happen

StraightTalkingSandra · 25/03/2020 19:56

The government has said off-licences can stay open. Alcohol isn't essential. Are you all up in arms over that too?

dementedpixie · 25/03/2020 20:00

I need alcohol on my usual weekend days to stay sane!

Vanhi · 25/03/2020 20:01

Alcohol isn't essential.

Having a load of alcohol dependent people suddenly feel the effects of withdrawal will be no help to anyone.

madcatladyforever · 25/03/2020 20:04

Take a big bag with you food shopping then nobody will see your newspaper.

StraightTalkingSandra · 25/03/2020 20:05

Well I'm buying a bottle of wine...or do I have to check in with Mumsnet first?

Vanhi · 25/03/2020 20:07

MN will assume if you buy a whole bottle that you're an alcoholic, in which case it's essential, so crack on.

PickAChew · 25/03/2020 20:07

@MiracletoCome if you can use mumsnet, you can download the TV guide app or just use it in your Web browser. It's more up to date than a bit of paper printed a week ago, anyhow.

StraightTalkingSandra · 25/03/2020 20:08

Might make it two bottles or will MN consider that hoarding?

StealingYourWiFi · 25/03/2020 20:08

We got given ours last week.

dementedma · 25/03/2020 20:09

I have a letter. I have to support mobilisation of military. These are scary times, mainly because the worst is yet to come.

PestyMachtubernahme · 25/03/2020 20:09

DH got the letter today, special needs school. He was told last week to carry id at all times.
Plus the staff at a local care home have letters.

Council refuses to allow direct payment carers to have id or letter.

browzingss · 25/03/2020 20:10

I cane across police whilst out today but they didn’t ask what I was doing. Perhaps they’re only stopping anyone blatantly breaking rules eg groups of people

Thepigeonsarecoming · 25/03/2020 20:10

@StraightTalkingSandra popping out for just a bottle of wine seems frivolous. Buying 4 bottles would be hoarding. I would say two seems a reasonable number!

chomalungma · 25/03/2020 20:12

You could just say you are a construction worker and you need a newspaper to read.

daisychain01 · 25/03/2020 20:12

You'd have to be a complete arsehole to get a fine.

My DH went to the bank at 08.59 today thinking that the bank opened at 9, it wasn't open (he found out they'd changed their hours to 10am start).

A couple of coppers were standing near where his car was parked and asked him what he was doing. He explained about the bank and that he needed to deposit some cheques for his business and would it be OK to nip back later and they couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful and didn't have a problem him coming back.

I'm sure if DH had a rude and arsey attitude towards them, they would have told him he'd had his daily quota of being out and would have to come back tomorrow, and if DH had refused they'd have given him a £30 fine.

We were very pleased they were out enforcing the law. There were quite a few people the police had to remind to keep the 2M distance.

MigginsMrs · 25/03/2020 20:13

Well why are they still printing newspapers if we aren't allowed to buy them?!

Indeed and newsagents are essential retailers

MigginsMrs · 25/03/2020 20:18

Police raking through bags to check people are only buying essentials 🙄 sure

MigginsMrs · 25/03/2020 20:23

If you are going to shop it should be for food and that should happen as little as possible, preferably at the most once a week

You’ve made the “at most once a week” thing up. Nicola Sturgeon the other day said no more than once a day.

Wingedharpy · 25/03/2020 20:25

My elderly , frail relative would prefer to be without food than his copy of the Times.

He has dexterity problems and his fine motor skills in his hands makes use of a tablet almost impossible.

He needs his news to be portable as he has hospital treatment 3 x per week and he takes his paper with him to keep abreast of stuff and help pass the time.

He is currently trying to find an establishment local to him that has a delivery service but, so far, no joy.
I think/hope this will change once the volunteer groups are fully up and running.

Until this is the case, his partner is nipping to local shop for his paper.

We don't all live in the same circumstances so something that is trivial to one person will absolutely not be to another.

flowerycurtain · 25/03/2020 20:33

I get my paper delivered daily. I love it.
