The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

Pretty sure air ambulances are also used to move desperate cases between hospitals

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/03/2020 19:22

Why aren’t you berating other multi millionaires?

Other millionaires aren't our rulers, we their subjects, technically. Other millionaires aren't funded yearly by the British taxpayer. And, again as mentioned upthread, other millionaires have donated.

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 19:23

Maybe air ambulances aren’t part of the pandemic strategy with everyone being at home. They’re usually used to rescue people from hard to reach places or in heavy traffic. The roads are well nigh deserted in the East of England right now.

A cursory google search will tell you charities are advertising for air ambulance pilots at the moment.

Didn't he give up the job in the first place to do more royal duties? Yet in the country's hour of need he hides in a stately home?

£65 million would be like pissing in the Pacific. Why aren’t you berating other multi millionaires?

2700 nurses would be like pissing in the Pacific right now? And other multi millionaires earn their money. They dont get it, no strings attached, from the taxpayer to be head of state.

Social distancing and soup kitchens don’t seem particularly compatible

Food banks need help now more than ever. There are many roles she could take on.

We don’t know it doesn’t.

We dont know it does. Why dont we deserve transparency about what they do? We pay for them.

OP posts:
Alsohuman · 27/03/2020 19:24

don't be daft, also, you know what the OP means

I know what she’s asked and answered accordingly. That doesn’t seem particularly daft.

MarshaBradyo · 27/03/2020 19:27

It’s not about money, people are so obtuse I think they are putting it on for this thread.

Alsohuman · 27/03/2020 19:27

We pay for them

You pay £1.24 a year for them. Why don’t you just pretend none of your taxes pay anything for them and I pay £2.48 for them? Win/win.

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 19:33

@alsohuman

Yes I do. Collectively a huge amount of money.

Do I get to demand a quid a year off every member of the public, and live as a millionaire as a result? Can I say it's okay as it's only a small amount of money per person?

While we are at it I can pretend I dont pay tax, and that you pay double on my behalf. Its laughable 😂😂

OP posts:
yesterdayhasgone · 27/03/2020 19:39

£1.24 is a huge amount of money. Like I said before, why is it that it’s only what we pay the royals that’s broken down this way. Probably originated from them, one of their better PR campaigns. “Look how cheap we are, just over a quid each.”

I’d like my £1.24 along with everyone else’s to be pumped into something worthwhile.. The royals are as much use as a chocolate fire guard.

Mamamia456 · 27/03/2020 20:07

Wolfgirrl - I thought you were talking about Duchy Food which was a company that Prince Charles founded. The Duchy of Cornwall does provide Prince Charles with an annual income but he uses some of that money for his philanthropic work which generates £100 million a year for charitable causes.

TheSandman · 27/03/2020 20:10

" Why cant the Duchy donate food and profit for food banks?
We don’t know it doesn’t."

Given the fact that it isn't plastered all over the front page of the more sycophantic papers I think it's a pretty fair guess to say that they're not.

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 20:13

@mamamia456

An unspecified amount I take it?

And again, doesnt answer the question.

OP posts:
Alsohuman · 27/03/2020 20:14

What’s unspecific about £100 million?

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 20:17

@alsohuman

I meant the division of the profits; how much he spends on his philanthropic work.

The 100mil doesn't come from the Duchy.

OP posts:
Mamamia456 · 27/03/2020 20:39

Wolfgirrl - The article says he gets £21million from the Duchy, but it doesn't say how much of that is used for philanthropic work. Prince Charles has founded 18 charities as well as The Princes Trust.

Mamamia456 · 27/03/2020 20:43

So he gets £21 million from the Duchy but through his philanthropic work £100 million is generated for good causes.

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 20:44

@mamamia456 in other words despite having 20million he gets others to dip in their pockets?

OP posts:
Alsohuman · 27/03/2020 20:50

Yes, he generates £80 million for good causes. Yet you’re complaining he does nothing and still carp when it’s pointed out he actually does a significant amount. Just admit the chip on your shoulder is the size of Buckingham Palace and have done with it.

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 20:58

@alsohuman

What do you mean by generates? He asks other people to give money? When he is a multi millionaire?

And you still havent answered the question... Wink

OP posts:
yesterdayhasgone · 27/03/2020 21:06

The money he generates could easily be done by someone other than a royal. There’s hardly much effort involved. The duchy doesn’t belong to him, only as long as there’s a monarchy. That money would still be generated without him. Prince Charles is a huge user of resources, his his of private jets for unnessessary trips are outrageous.

yesterdayhasgone · 27/03/2020 21:07

*his use

yesterdayhasgone · 27/03/2020 21:10

observer.com/2019/06/prince-charles-camilla-parker-bowles-royal-family-travel-expensive-trips-tours-caribbean/

Those expensive trips under the guise of “working tours”

Mamamia456 · 27/03/2020 21:12

Wolfgirrl - That's what all charities do, that's the whole point of them.

Mamamia456 · 27/03/2020 21:15

Yesterday - I doubt they would make as much money though without Prince Charles name.

Alsohuman · 27/03/2020 21:17

What do you mean by generates? He asks other people to give money? When he is a multi millionaire?

He’s not a multi millionaire to the tune of giving £100 million a year to charity. That he uses his position and influence to encourage others to do so is surely a good thing. And do stop with the fucking “you haven’t answered the question” refrain, you’re like a bloody stuck record.

Wolfgirrl · 27/03/2020 21:22

@alsohuman

But you havent. You keep changing the subject. And that was the point of the thread.
