The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

@TSSDNCOP

Everyone that says 'oh it's only a quid a year's or whatever is missing the point. Collectively it's a huge amount that can be much better spent. How many nurses could you pay for with that sort of money? How many teachers? You know, the unsung heroes that actually do stuff?

Whenever people want them to actually do some work the excuses are always:

  1. Well they're damned if they do and damned if they dont (I would rather be criticised for doing something than nothing. Nothing is sheer laziness)
  2. They're not supposed to get involved in politics
  3. They're not supposed to get involved with current affairs
  4. They're not supposed to get involved with anything too hands-on, they're royal/elderly/theyve already done an instagram message
  5. They're not supposed to tell you what they do or dont do for charity/worthy causes because its boasting (worst excuse ever)

I will repeat myself loud and clear, what is the point of them?

Alsohuman · 26/03/2020 17:36

we'd get a say in who that was instead of having them foisted on us

Yes, because we’re so good at that, aren’t we? Look at our elected PM and his sociopathic little friend who he’s foisted on us.

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 17:37

@alsohuman

If now isnt the moment to highlight how utterly useless they are, and how their funding could be better spent, when is? It's never the moment according the monarchists apparently 😂😂

Well said.

KonTikki · 26/03/2020 17:43

Wolfgirrl
You are entitled to your view,
Now isn't that nice.
In Thailand you'd be facing the Death penalty for espousing your views against the Royal Family.
Here we can just yawn, and turn to another thread.

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 17:43

What 👏 is 👏 the 👏 point 👏 of 👏 them 👏

Why can nobody actually answer this?!

OP posts:
Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 17:44

@KonTikki

We are not in Thailand

In a way that's the best response yet though! Very dramatic

KonTikki · 26/03/2020 17:48

Thank you!

Clavinova · 26/03/2020 17:49

Actually, looking at those survey results - the Royal Family are more popular with the 18-24 age group than 25-49 - so bad luck there;

Do you think that Britain should continue to have a monarchy, or not?

Should:
18-24 57%
25-49 52%

It should not:
18-24 18%
25-49 27%

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 17:50

@clavinova

That did surprise me actually about the age groups!

But it's not what I would call a vast majority, they're actually a little less popular than i thought.

Are you able to answer the million dollar question..?

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 17:52

What about age 49+?

Clavinova · 26/03/2020 17:53

What about age 49+?
More popular of course.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 26/03/2020 17:53

You know what? Whatever polls and surveys we can all find to support our POV, I STILL think the royal family is an outdated, useless, pointless waste of space, money and time.

I don't know any 'royal fans' in real life, but they must be around somewhere, waving little flags and tugging their forelocks and all that.

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 17:57

@Clavinova

Will you ever answer the question? What is the point of them?

OP posts:
MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 17:59

More popular of course
Well it’s not surprising is it as population ages they’ll drop off as said earlier

A bit of popularity around Kate etc will wane

Alsohuman · 26/03/2020 17:59

Will you ever answer the question? What is the point of them?

They exist purely and simply to wind you up. And a bloody good job they’re making of it too.

yesterdayhasgone · 26/03/2020 18:03

In a way we’ve been brainwashed to think the royal family are wonderful superior beings, and that they deserve all the grand palaces and privilege. We don’t need them but we’ve been led to believe we couldn’t live without them.

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 18:08

@Alsohuman that's strangely flattering in a way Hmm I didnt realise my outrage was so entertaining!!

Although you've basically just admitted you have no idea

OP posts:
Boogiewoogietoo · 26/03/2020 18:13

The Queen rolled up her sleeves and volunteered during World War 2. She has devoted her life to this country.

To suggest that she is shirking her duty now is tasteless (and f*ing ignorant) in the extreme.

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 18:16

@boogiewoogietoo

Can you answer the question?

OP posts:
Alsohuman · 26/03/2020 18:18

Yes, your outrage about something so irrelevant is hugely amusing. And I simply don’t care. I do think there’s more point to the monarchy than there is to someone with nothing better to do than spend hours of their life criticising them.

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 18:19

@alsohuman

No idea then basically

OP posts:
Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 26/03/2020 18:19

someone with nothing better to do than spend hours of their life criticising them

To be fair, it's only cost me a few minutes. Grin

Alsohuman · 26/03/2020 18:23

To be fair, it's only cost me a few minutes

It’s not you who’s been at it for 28 hours! 😉

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 18:23

someone with nothing better to do than spend hours of their life criticising them

Or defending them to be fair Hmm
