The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

God, all those engagements the Prince of Wales is doing, think of the organisation he must be doing, the buses he takes, how does he get his shopping in and his shirts ironed.... Oh wait a minute, he turns up, gets lifted and laid, fed then driven home..

Tough job but somebody has to do it

Clavinova · 26/03/2020 15:05

Most 70 year old men are probably sitting in a chair reading the paper, pottering around the garden or playing golf - their wives are ironing shirts and cooking dinner. Grin

BurneyFanny · 26/03/2020 15:38

Srsly people think Chas has useful input to share with the head of the world economic forum? Bless.

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 15:40

Everyone saying they dont expect a 90 year old woman to be out & about hauling food parcels around;

REDUCTIO AD ABSURDUM. Read my original post Grin

Oh wait a minute, he turns up, gets lifted and laid, fed then driven home. Sometimes he has to sit and make polite smalltalk with people like Donald Trump, even have a meal with him. I'd rather clean toilets.

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 15:44

Having read all this I actually feel quite embarrassed for royal fans 😳 It must be hard trying to defend something which is basically indefensible Confused

To be fair royal fans are off the hook most of the time. Even now we’re asked to not question it, keep the hierarchy. The status quo is that they somehow deserve to be above the doting masses.

yesterdayhasgone · 26/03/2020 16:03

Prince Charles has over 100 servants. My what a hard life.

Clavinova · 26/03/2020 16:20

I wouldn't really call myself a fan - well, not until recently - I was quite impressed by all the pomp and ceremony with the royal wedding and Trump's visit - I suppose we put on a great show.

Srsly people think Chas has useful input to share with the head of the world economic forum? Bless.

Probably - on the 12th March he had a meeting with Mark Carney. Grin

12 March 2020

Buckingham Palace

I’m not sure what they need to be defended against or why. The vast majority of the population wants a monarchy so a bit of squawking on an Internet forum is hardly a threat.

bigyop982 · 26/03/2020 16:51

Now would be a good time to rethink our 'need' for a monarchy.
What are they actually doing for the good of our/ their nation at this time ?
What sort of example are they setting to their ' subjects' right now ?
What sort of value for money do they provide ?
Are they meeting / exceeding
expectations ?
Are they meeting their targets ?
Are they outstanding ?
All measures used to judge the rest of us.
If they aren't then they take steps to improve or face 'wage' cuts ie. civil list reductions or job loss ie. end of monarchy.

How about only receiving 80 % of the civil list whilst this pandemic is going on. Perhaps having to repay 20%. Trying to survive on nothing till the system can cope with the new amount.
Coping on their own without staff to reduce human contact to a minimum. Proper self isolation.
Staying in their primary residence instead of moving to one of their country homes with an entourage of staff.
Donating/ volunteering like many of their subjects. Some of whom have very little to give except their time and labour and possibly their lives.
We need to take long, hard look at their behaviour in this time of national crisis.

Alsohuman · 26/03/2020 16:53

Surely we’ve got more important things to worry about? I know I have.

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 16:53

It will change overtime as the population gets older. Less support.

Sure they trying to reinvigorate through younger ones but got Charles to go through first.

JellyfishandShells · 26/03/2020 17:00

You are reading an echo chamber of your own making. The only embarrassment here is the extraordinary whining.

BurneyFanny · 26/03/2020 17:01

he had a meeting with Mark Carney

I bet Mark Carney was thrilled at having to listen to the querulous old fool's out-of-touch wibblings.

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 17:02

Not Mark Carney don’t give it to him ;

BurneyFanny · 26/03/2020 17:04

oh and on Republic, from Wiki: " By 2015 the group had two full-time members of staff and an income of £140,000. In 2016 it had over 5,000 paying members and about 35,000 online supporters." Not 400.

managedmis · 26/03/2020 17:09

^^

Yeah, like heath care, education, work. Which all could be improved if the Royals wanted to. All well and good Kate and William showing their faces once in a while, what the UK needs is investment, not PR.

Clavinova · 26/03/2020 17:12

Not 400

£9,724 raised from 384 donors (current campaign?) - plastered all over the front page of their website - you can't miss it.

In 2016
Have they lost paying members then?

two full-time members of staff
That's impressive.

Clavinova · 26/03/2020 17:16

Companies House -
84 officers /73 resignations - not looking good.

ssd · 26/03/2020 17:17

Imagine if the money ploughed into the royals went into the NHS instead?

Maybe this virus would be better dealt with.

Wolfgirrl · 26/03/2020 17:28

@alsohumanif you call a vast majority around 60%

And that's with the support of the older generations.

And you've still not answered the question. Nobody has.

*got the right thread this time Grin

The vast majority of the population wants a monarchy

Erm. Not really a vast majority. And as the OP said, that's probably going to change dramatically in the next few years.

Alsohuman · 26/03/2020 17:33

Yeah, like heath care, education, work. Which all could be improved if the Royals wanted to. All well and good Kate and William showing their faces once in a while, what the UK needs is investment, not PR

No, like people dying, not able to buy food, not able to see their kids, grandchildren and aged relatives, nurses crying in their car at the end of a 14 hour shift. That’s what I’m concerned about, not a very old couple doing as they’re told and self isolating or a pensioner with the virus doing the same. Anyone with the brain space to throw their toys out of the pram about the monarchy right now has got seriously fucked priorities.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/03/2020 17:34

Imagine if the money ploughed into the royals went into the NHS instead?

I'm not sure it's quite that simple, ssd - we'd still have to pay for an elected head of state, but the point for some of us is that we'd get a say in who that was instead of having them foisted on us
