The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

@Alsohuman

See another 'oh do'!! I've literally never heard it outside MN but it's like a mandatory prefix on here!

Can I say, oh do stop swearing Wink

@Lifeisabeach09 yeah I know it sounds like I'm picking holes now but that was the first thing I thought! Maybe one of her holding today's newspaper? Lol

From the twitter link over 69,000 people appear to have watched Sophie Wessex sharing tips on looking after children from home this week.
545,000 views on Instagram.

Alsohuman · 25/03/2020 21:00

You can certainly say “oh do stop swearing”. It would have zero effect though.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 25/03/2020 21:00

Royal family haters are jealous of their wealth

You're brighter than that, surely? Making daft statements like that makes you sound far less intelligent than you probably are.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 21:03

@Alsohuman 😂😂

@Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat obviously we are haters! And haters gonna hate paying money they can ill afford to multi millionaires that dont really work

@SoleBizzz

How would it make me a hypocrite? I work for my money and dont get 60mil from the public. Totally false equivalency (love that phrase!)

Royal family Twitter page.
She looks blue, for want of a better word - quite bloodless.

Actually, the photo must be from last year - same outfits - just the NCVO anniversary today;

Leflic · 25/03/2020 21:15

Wolfgirrl And yet you are completely free to make 60 million yourself , or not, or do whatever you see fit as your life path.
Monarchy has a massive weight of expectation from the entire countries history to not putting a foot wrong. Even if they said “ fuck it” and disbanded how would the country actually benefit?
One of them has Coronavirus. They aren’t pretending to be gods.

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 21:21

We can’t be sure he has corona virus. I’m not sure I believe it. It’s strange how all these famous people get it, but usually ever so mild and are better within a week. Hmm

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 21:24

Wolfgirrl And yet you are completely free to make 60 million yourself , or not, or do whatever you see fit as your life path.

Where’s the relevance, it’s not as if they’ve made 60 million themselves.

moondance19 · 25/03/2020 21:27

Royal family haters are jealous of their wealth

What a ridiculous ill thought out statement.

Lifeisabeach09 · 25/03/2020 21:27

Monarchy has a massive weight of expectation from the entire countries history to not putting a foot wrong.

How terrible for them. After all, it's not as if they've benefited from it: immense wealth, lands, shares, other assets, access to the best schools and medical care. Oh, wait, they have.

Lifeisabeach09 · 25/03/2020 21:29

They aren’t pretending to be gods.

There is an us and them mentality. They certainly don't see themselves as part of the masses.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 25/03/2020 21:32

And yet you are completely free to make 60 million yourself

Ah yes. The self-made multi-millionaire family, the Windsors. Amazing how they 'made' all that money. A true example to us all.

The quality of pro-royal argument here is...stunning.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 21:34

@leflic

Not putting a foot wrong?! Have you visited planet earth lately? Prince Andrew, Harry and Meghan....

Hahaha.

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 21:37

@leflic as for the 60 mil, you are spot on - I'm sure if I work hard enough I could be a hereditary head of state as well Smile

I would not like to be a member of the Royal Family myself , constant scrutiny , always being photographed and watched .
(Though I would always wear a riding hat even if I wasn't )

But the RF adds nothing to my life .
Oh , tell a lie .
On the Wedding Day of Harry and Meghan, DD and I went to Oxford Street shopping and apart from the Entertainment section of John Lewis (which had huge screens showing the Wedding) , it was empty .
Blardy lovely . Grin

SoloD · 26/03/2020 11:03

I think the Monarchy has had it's time and I really think we need to start discussing a written constitution and the option of having a republic.

Snog · 26/03/2020 11:23

@SoloD I quite agree. The last few years have made me feel like the Royal Family has no place in the Britain I would like to live in.

Since they all seem to find being royal a burden I'm not sure why they are still carrying on with the charade. It's the feudal system and belongs firmly in the past.

UYScuti · 26/03/2020 11:41

Jealous of their wealth
No I'm speaking out against the unfairness of a system in which a few are afforded enormous wealth and privilege whilst the rest of us have to struggle, high levels of inequality are damaging for any society.
We are expected to behave as if society is meritocracy when it very patently isn't, human advancement is due to our collective efforts, because we work together and co-operate but the benefits from this endeavour are not distributed fairly or proportionately by any means.
Jeff bezos didn't start out as a caveman and then build his empire out of nothing, he skimmed off the efforts of everyone else, he used things which already existed in society and had been created by the collective efforts of others.

TSSDNCOP · 26/03/2020 11:42

We can’t be sure he has corona virus. I’m not sure I believe it

Because he's required to provide you with actual evidence? What form would you like that to take? Perhaps he could rig up a live web-feed of him coughing.

The real problem is that he meets a lot of people every week. If he died there would be a major snafu in the line of succession. If HMQ caught it and died it would be major world news.

You personally are entitled to your opinion of the RF. As the old MN adage goes opinions are like arseholes....everyone has one.

There have been several announcements/visits already. The Govt is trying hard to speak with one voice, the last thing anyone needs is contradictory messages. The point that HMQ is called upon will either be "we are beyond fucked" or "the worst is over", so be careful what you wish for.

I imagine the people at the Hospitals would really prefer not to have anyone not needed visiting.

I also imagine Christie's can't exactly stage a n auction to sell off a few paintings or crowns to fund respirators.

The market will sort that out. Dyson Et al are doing what they do best. Using British ingenuity and entrepreneurship to get ventilators produced and delivered.

didofido · 26/03/2020 11:46

Even in democratic republics there are vast differences in personal fortunes and incomes. Isn't Putin said to be one of the richest men in the world?

UYScuti · 26/03/2020 11:51

Putin is the poster boy for corruption, he has to stay in power because he has so many enemies, the minute he steps down he'll be flayed alive

Clavinova · 26/03/2020 11:54

I think the Monarchy has had it's time and I really think we need to start discussing a written constitution and the option of having a republic.

Well I hate to disappoint you but I've just looked at that Republic website mentioned earlier - fewer than 400 people have donated funds, totalling less than £10,000 - not a very popular political movement is it?
