Heard off a few people today (different times) that schools wont open until December.
Surely not????

I think it is best just to look at one week or month at a time or we will all go bonkers.

What people? Are they in a position to have any idea?

Quartz2208 · 23/03/2020 16:17

No one knows - literally no one knows absolutely anything could happen. It could be as early as June more realistically July/August/September

December just sounds odd though as would be surely at the height of another peak?

A vaccine is 12-18 months away but an effective treatment may be available much sooner - clinical trials have started using existing drugs approved to treat other illnesses . If these are successful it will reduce the pressure on the health service and social distancing measures may be relaxed. But no one can predict when schools will reopen.

CuppaZa · 23/03/2020 18:24

My high risk 18 year old is staying off until a vaccine is available.

SpokeTooSoon · 23/03/2020 19:49

I’m staying optimistic for June personally. Keeping everything crossed anyway. It would be so wonderful for our children. Mine will miss school terribly.

SpokeTooSoon · 23/03/2020 19:50

Schools are reopening in Hong Kong already.

Realistically not for a long, long time

CuppaZa · 23/03/2020 20:31

@bringbringbring12 no, not for a very long time. But she is severely disabled, attended a special college and it won’t have an impact on her education/work prospects

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/03/2020 23:07

No. BUT they may open towards the summer as cases fall off, then have to reclose again as cases rise again. This is the set of stronger and weaker controls that the gov see will have to be cycled between to keep numbers low while biding time for the true exit strategy, which is a vaccine.

Blue boxes are stronger measures e.g. social distancing and school closures.

ScienceNut · 23/03/2020 23:10

Where does fair come into any of this!!!!!!!

crazydiamond222 · 24/03/2020 05:55

@23:07DrMadelineMaxwell
Where did the diagram come from? The principle makes sense but the timings are scary with little opening time between waves - 3 to 4 months of shutdown followed by 1 month open repeated for 2 years.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 24/03/2020 07:18

I believe it comes from modelling done at Imperial college london. Originally posted on the thread asking how long schools would stay closed for.

MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2020 07:19

I’m more concerned that they open too early.

CuppaZa · 24/03/2020 08:39

Me too @MarshaBradyo

GoldenOmber · 24/03/2020 09:22

Yes, that diagram is from the Imperial College study that informed the government’s strategy now.

It is showing what will happen if we only control this through social distancing/school closures etc. We’d need to keep relaxing then reinstating measures in waves.

It isn’t showing how pharmaceutical interventions (new drugs) and other measures like improved testing and contact tracing could improve this. So now that’s the next steps - keep working on the drug treatments and working on a testing/tracing plan. Going to mean doing some things we don’t yet have the ability to do, but the good news at least is that there are a lot of people all over the world working on that now, and the lockdown measures we have today will buy the NHS time while that’s being done.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 24/03/2020 09:32

I cant image keeping kids off for 8 months!! It wouldnt be fair on the working parents who are not key workers

Fuck, are you for real? Wtf? I’m a key worker. I’m going in to protect mindless idiots like you😡ffs
