Heard off a few people today (different times) that schools wont open until December.
Surely not????

No one knows, everyone is just guessing. I can't see them being closed until Christmas

Michaelbaubles · 22/03/2020 14:53

I think it’ll be if at all possible, the last two weeks of the summer term (to allow for transition to take place effectively, and general tidying/prep work) or September. But who knows?

Undecided91 · 22/03/2020 14:55

Not a chance. We will be back up and running by June!

JuneTreeTop · 22/03/2020 14:56

I cant image keeping kids off for 8 months!! It wouldnt be fair on the working parents who are not key workers

This kind of speculation is completely pointless. We have not even managed to get the country locked down, so until that happens we can't make any estimates at how long this will last.

PristineCondition · 22/03/2020 14:57

Absolutely no one knows. Its all a guess/ personal opinion right now.

I don't think it will open this side of summer hols but like everyone else ive nothing to back it up

Littleshortcake · 22/03/2020 14:57

I don't think so! I think things will be back to normal for sept

PristineCondition · 22/03/2020 14:57

And none of this is fair on anyone.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 22/03/2020 14:59

If wed locked down 2-4 weeks ago wed have been up and running by the summer. Now who knows.

OnlyJudyCanJudgeMe · 22/03/2020 14:59

No one knows, but I doubt Scottish schools will be open again this school year.

TheABC · 22/03/2020 14:59

We just don't know. Judging by Italy's example, we will be lucky to be over it before May. I am mentally preparing myself to home educate until September. That way, anything less is a bonus (and lives saved).

December may be possible if there is a second wave or people ignore social distancing on a large scale.

crazydiamond222 · 22/03/2020 15:00

Hard to oredict at the moment although looking at the imperial model it is possible they will open again in september and then close for the spring term.

slipperywhensparticus · 22/03/2020 15:00

Its a pandemic it doesnt need to be fair

sunshinemachine · 22/03/2020 15:00

i think they will open in sept

KatherineJaneway · 22/03/2020 15:00

No one knows but September is a good guess

BeetrootRocks · 22/03/2020 15:00

Wait and see

Little point speculating

Amboseli · 22/03/2020 15:02

I think it's possible. This virus isn't going away. Only a vaccine or herd immunity through healthy people having it will allow lives to become relatively 'normal' again.

But there is still a question mark about whether herd immunity is even achievable as the Corona is a cold virus and we aren't immune to colds, most people get them at least once a year. But current colds aren't generally life threatening, unlike Corona.

CodenameVillanelle · 22/03/2020 15:02

How could anyone possibly know?

DrMadelineMaxwell · 22/03/2020 15:02

If they are telling the most vulnerable to stay home 12 weeks that takes us up to the end of June.

Harriett123 · 22/03/2020 15:03

I would assume the December theory is based on the fact that the earliest a vaccine will be developed will be December or January of next year.
This is based on the initial estimates on vaccine timeframes at the start of the year.
As others have said there is no definitive timetable on anything reopening.

iVampire · 22/03/2020 15:03

That’s at the more pessimistic end of predictions, but yes it’s quite possible.

Especially as the great British public is showing no signs of comprehending that ‘it’s OK to go out for a walk/run’ is not a synonym for ‘it’s fine for groups to meet up as long as you are outdoors’

So until the penny drops that we are expected to do exactly what it says on the tin, expect a long and uncertain ride

(even if we do things right, it still might be long/uncertain, but there’s a chance we’ll be on one of the more optimistic trajectories)

Amboseli · 22/03/2020 15:04

And vaccine is at least 12-18 months away.

As soon as lockdown is relaxed (are we even adhering to it now?) there will be a second, probably worse wave.

Namelesswonder · 22/03/2020 15:04

Scaremongering, nobody knows and everybody is guessing. Mostly likely scenario is schools will reopen after the summer break. August in Scotland and Sept for England

enjoyingSun · 22/03/2020 15:07

No-one knows at the minute.

Howevere if they get more testing for virus set up and also the anti-bodies test developed and rolled out on a massive scale to see who's had it and is now immune we'd be in a very different place than now.

I think they're modeling opening and shutting schools down as peaks build but depends on so many factors.

I don't think anyone is making decisions so far out yet but getting through next few months first.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 22/03/2020 15:10

As soon as lockdown is relaxed (are we even adhering to it now?) there will be a second, probably worse wave.

This. We'll get a more relaxed period possibly over the summer - I did wonder if they would ask schools to back in July and Sugust to prevent people going on their holidays. Then come Autumn - huge lockdown again.

Earliest guess of things being back to normal - Summer 2021.
