Is this scaremongering: schools not open until December

Heard off a few people today (different times) that schools wont open until December.
Surely not????

Truth is nobody knows! Stop spreading rumours and scaremongering, ffs, now others will repeat what you’ve put with no good reason.

LooseGoose29 · 22/03/2020 15:16

We will get more of an idea by watching China. If they have a second wave so will we I would imagine. There is nothing to be gained by speculating, none of us know nor can we make an educated guess.

ListeningQuietly · 22/03/2020 15:18

The death rate is doubling every six days
people are being utter idiots and gathering in LARGE numbers
therefore herd immunity and the accompanying huge number of funerals should have been achieved by early June SadAngry

Schools will open by September at the latest.

nowmorethanever · 22/03/2020 15:19

We will get more of an idea by watching China, yes, but if past experience is anything to go by the govt will do fuck all about it.

Cherrysoup · 22/03/2020 15:19

I’m meant to be starting a new job in September. My mum said I might not! Scary thought!

myohmywhatawonderfulday · 22/03/2020 15:20

The fact is that no one knows.

My personal speculation is that we have entered a 'war-era' and as such the end is now open ended. Everyone hopes it will be quick - it won't be. I think we will be like this for one year at least.

As soon as people accept that times have changed, get through the stages of grief quickly, and move to acceptance it will be easier.

It is never going back to how it was before...

EverydayLife · 22/03/2020 15:21

No idea but I’ve prepared for September in my head.

EverydayLife · 22/03/2020 15:22

It could be later as some of the experts are saying we are in this for 18 months-2 years.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 22/03/2020 15:25

The scientists who are modelling this expect it to peak in June. Based on that they expect a relaxation of restrictions around September time but then a tightening up when the second wave starts at the end of the year.

But that's educated guess work. Others are saying that they'll be in place for 18 months to 2 years or until a vaccine is found.

Fact is nobody knows for sure.

HairyFloppins · 22/03/2020 15:25

Herd immunity if it exists will be achieved by next month looking at all the arseholes queueing for fish and chips.

partystress · 22/03/2020 15:26

I wonder if they will aim to get 15 weeks in in the autumn, then keep closer watch on recurrence, with a view to shutting down again in January. I think there would be a focus on ensuring all older pupils could learn online next time, but it would still be hard to run public exams as the disadvantage argument is so powerful when there is closure for any length of time.

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2020 15:28

We have no idea.

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2020 15:29

But in my mind I’m thinking September, I can handle that.

Re herd immunity and crowds yep people are pushing that along.

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/03/2020 15:29

ListeningQuietly
Yes, I agree, herd immunity if this really is a thing is not that far off unless something changes drastically. I think this was boris’s aim in the beginning and has acquiesced due to pressure both within and without. Public pressure amongst other things resulted in school closure. Apparently macron phoned him back end of last week stating he’d close the border unless something changed, which forced the announcement of closure of pubs, gyms etc.

Escapetab · 22/03/2020 15:30

I cant image keeping kids off for 8 months!! It wouldnt be fair on the working parents who are not key workers

Oh just tell the virus that then, I'm sure it'll apologize and retreat.

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 15:32

The only new cases in China are from people travelling from other countries. That is why now all travellers have a mandatory enforced 14 day quarantine.

AcrossthePond55 · 22/03/2020 15:34

I'm in California. It's speculated here that schools will remain shut until next September.

They have to give this time for a statistical real decrease and stabilization of new cases before they can start opening things up again. But at the rate some a lot of stupid people are ignoring our State ordered 'stay at home' order it's going to be months before we see that decrease.

I'm predicting that our 'please stay at home' order will be beefed up to 'mandatory stay at home or you'll get a hefty fine' order. And a huge fine should be in place for non-essential employers who are refusing to close down.

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 15:34

Herd immunity is an unproven and unscientific theory. No point repeating it. Eve the government no longer talks about it.

1980sQueen · 22/03/2020 15:34

It's impossible to predict that far ahead.
Even week by week is impossible at the moment.

GoldenOmber · 22/03/2020 15:34

Nobody knows, and anyone who tells you they do know at this point is bullshitting.

We could be looking at a few months of closures followed by another year of intermittent measures, like schools opened then closed again, until there’s a vaccine. That’s the modelling the Imperial College report people have mentioned suggests is the only way to hold the virus at bay with social distancing measures. Or we could be looking at a better situation where we have better pharmaceutical treatments, plus better testing and tracing to identify new cases and stop them spreading the virus, so we don’t need other social measures to stay this restrictive.

Either way though we need at least a little while of measures like this to get the numbers of infected people falling and do all that can be done to increase NHS capacity, and give the scientists some time to develop better tests/drugs/contact tracing.

HowManyToes · 22/03/2020 15:34

It wouldnt be fair on the working parents who are not key workers

Wow

TeddyIsaHe · 22/03/2020 15:36

If people don’t start social distancing properly this is going to go on u TIL we have a vaccine. So 18 months.

This is really showing me how many thick people are around.

AcrossthePond55 · 22/03/2020 15:36

'Next September' meaning 2020. My wording could have been interpreted to mean 2021.

TeddyIsaHe · 22/03/2020 15:36

*until

Aragog · 22/03/2020 15:38

No one knows. It s all rumours.

It is realistic to suggest they won't return until the new school year - so September 2020. That is what schools seem to be working towards in general.

But even that is guessing.
