I can’t bear the thought of just riding this out and seeing who catches it, gets ill and dies-it feels like a sick dystopian experiment. It reminds me of that horrible third series of Torchwood.

It seems so wrong that the WHO advice is so clear yet the U.K. are deciding to ignore it and that their maverick plan is so much better.

mrshoho · 14/03/2020 11:53

@TheElementsOfMedical great post and you put into words how it is. Many posters asking why the testing is only being done for hospitalised patients should have a read, it's on page 1 of this thread.

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 11:55

In my local area, some organisations have tried to set up volunteer services to help anyone who is self isolating with things like getting in shopping. If you're able to, it might be worth looking for similar organisations in your area and offering to help.

I think there will be a lot of people caught out by this- I was speaking to someone on Wednesday who said they had almost no food in and didn't know what they would do if they had to self isolate for 2 weeks. Hopefully they have now bought a buffer, but obviously this is not possible for everyone.

SistemaAddict · 14/03/2020 11:55

@BookMeOnTheSudExpress please don't go! Ignore the twats Thanks

ShanghaiDiva · 14/03/2020 11:56

@Angryrant55
Yes, waiting to see what happens in my city in China as we are currently at zero cases, all recovered.
However, restrictions placed on those arriving back in the city are tough and seem to be changing on a daily basis which suggests that the Chinese are very worried about the virus resurfacing.
One day you can go out and walk the dog the next day they tape up your door...

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 12:00

@fedup21 I agree. I am especially worried for some of the children I teach with long term health conditions- their protection at the moment relies on everyone following the advice and their parents being clued up enough to keep them at home if it's needed.

Exochord · 14/03/2020 12:01

Our policy at work is if there is a case we will all have to self isolate
But there’s no way to know if there’s a case because they’re not testing anyone! Only the serious cases get tested now, which means 80% of cases will be missed.

Iran reports 1,365 new cases
I’m not convinced by the numbers coming out of Iran. They wouldn’t dig mass burial pits that are visible from space just for 611 deaths.

Mum in isolation with three kids says she can't get supermarket food delivery slot until late next week
This is exactly why you need to have enough food for a week. Delivery slots will become even more restricted as drivers go off sick or simply decide they’re not paid enough to put themselves at risk. The official advice not to stockpile only works if EVERYONE follows it.

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 12:03

The elements of medical spot on.

It's this idea that teachers and everyone else in a school aside from children don't exist I find staggering

MacronsPensWiper · 14/03/2020 12:05

Does this also mean they deliberately want our young teens to get it?

fedup21 · 14/03/2020 12:06

Does this also mean they deliberately want our young teens to get it?

Yes

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 12:07

@MacronsPensWiper Also that teens don't have at risk family members they could take it home to, and teens don't ever have underlying health conditions.

The death rate for teenagers isn't 0, it's something like 0.2%, which still a huge risk to be taking- 2-3 pupils per averaged size secondary school dying.

If they do want teenagers to actually catch it, and I agree it seems like they do, then they are also playing with their lives.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 12:08

There is some belief herd immunity wont work because they is a feeling that if you get again you might not become as ill with it as you did the first time you still going to be as infectious if not more.

Such a shitshow here-feel very let down by the NHS. Posted about my 8 yr old dd earlier this week-thanks to all for the good wishes. Backstory- she came home from school on Monday with severe backache, breathing difficulty, temp shot up to over 40 in an hour. Phoned gp, refused to see her, phoned 111 they called an ambulance then rang back and said it could take 4+hours so take up to A&E myself. Finally seen after 5/6 hours , x-ray taken, antibiotics given but not enough for 5 day course.finally got more antiobiotic prescribed. Asked 3 times to see GP as shes been febrile up to 40° for 6 days now, breathless but not struggling so much, now got a cough but no mucus. Finally got through to 111 last night at 8, told she should be tested and dr would phone back but could take 4 hours. Eventually get a call at 4 AM this morning ,8 hours later ,from a nurse who agrees she needs to be seen face to face. Makes an appointment for gp this morning-only for it to be cancelled and a phone consultation arranged. GP thinks its Corona and given new antiobiotics to be used for 24 hours which is specifically for pneumonia. Says if no change by tomorrow to take to larger A&E where they will hopefully be able to check her oxygen levels etc and test her as she fits the criteria. Just feel GP's should be our frontline here-to suggest going back to an overcrowded A&E is not correct. 2 GP's have suggested this to me.

Hope you stay @BookMeOnTheSudExpress.

On the subject of our Italian-dwelling MNers have we heard how @VenetoResident is getting on? These threads are so fast moving now it's hard to keep up!

AvocadoOwl · 14/03/2020 12:15

What a worry @nancypineapple. Hope you are all feeling better very soon Thanks

BBC NEWS - 'Coronavirus cases in Spain rise by 1,500 to more than 5,700, public health officials say.'

Also I hear from my friend 10 people in Critical condition in Portugal with 169 cases in total.

Nancy pineapple....

You should tell the mail or red top about this.. This is not even at a difficult stage for the NHS yet!!

This is horrendous and every call back takes hours, every cock up, misinformation, confusion means someone isn't being given the help they need....

SansaSnark · 14/03/2020 12:19

@nancypineapple That does sound really scary, but I don't think GPs should be seeing her face to face if it's a suspected case. If she turns out to have it, then it becomes a problem for the whole surgery. To me, it seems more like the hospital should have a way to deal with cases so you aren't waiting for a long time in a and e.

nancy

I've been through this before at a busy NHS time years ago, I've been mangled in this system and it's why I'm so so scared.

It reminds me of that horrible third series of Torchwood.

What, that series where they have to decide which 10% of children to sacrifice to aliens who will use them for recreational drug taking?!

Not quite like that is it? Grin
