Same with the self isolation rules, as more and more people start getting coughs and self isolating, things will naturally get quieter. Schools become emptier. Then when they bring in the rule about families self isolating it will get quieter even more.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 11:17

I think a lot of families will have to mass isolate - can't really isolate a kid without the parents as a kid cant really feed themselves so the parent will surely pick it up.

I dont mind self isolating the whole family tbh, I just know that the school will be on my back regarding attendance.
I have enough food to last for a week at least, just trying to do the righr thing .

@Alone07 Can you tell the school a white lie and say that all have symptoms? Or just discuss the situation with the school- you may find they are more sympathetic than usual?

Hi guys.
I'm about to dereg from MN as have been relentlessly attacked on several threads this morning, accused of lying and scaremongering. I trust all but two people on this thread (one of those is partly responsible for me going)
I have contacted HQ but heard nothing- no surprises there.
I'm no sensitive flower, I've been on MN since 2004 and done the full gamut of AIBU and trolling.
But to be told over and over that I'm lying, exaggerating and responsible for hysteria and panic buying when we are sitting here locked in our houses with armed police on the streets (which I've made up apparently) has been the final straw.

Thank you for the info, the updates and the safe haven that this thread has (largely) offered.
I wish you well, I wish you luck and health above all.

Sunshinesky1981 · 14/03/2020 11:38

Can anyone point me to the official explanation as to why they have now decided to cut back on testing to hospital cases only when the rest of the world seems to be upping theirs?Surely if UK scientists and the government are saying that the reason they are not imposing restrictions like everyone else is to bring them in at the right time, then the forecast models will need to have the correct data? Or are they just meaning that they are working on the assumption that x amount of hospital cases will equal x amount of infections in the general population? I would think on a situation like this the more information the better, otherwise people looking at the confirmed figures of other countries rising and ours being kept artificially low through lack of testing would mean that more people will not take the threat severity seriously ?

WouldShouldCould · 14/03/2020 11:38

Our policy at work is if there is a case we will all have to self isolate. One of the contractors is now self isolating and after talking to his wife I'm fairly confident he has got it. Work won't close until a case is confirmed. Case won't be confirmed unless he goes into hospital, result being loads of probably infected people going into care homes/special needs schools.

Angryrant55 · 14/03/2020 11:39

Looks like MP's are returning to suggesting China started it on purpose.

Gammeldragz · 14/03/2020 11:42

Morning all.
@RedToothBrush excellent post about the two camps, though I would suggest there are another set. There are still many who aren't taking it seriously and not following any advice, despite being aware. They neither trust this government nor have much interest in politics. There are also those who are quite oblivious to the implications of any of this, don't watch the news and aren't paying attention at all.

Going back to your main two sides though, excellent example of this at work (Dr's surgery) yesterday. Two GPs, one who is already reducing social contact and trying to reduce their risk as much as possible, frustrated at the government advice and lack of testing, has little faith the the government (voted LIB dem). Another GP said they trust Boris' approach, but also said they feel it won't be as bad as we've been warned and that it will blow over in a few weeks. Third GP seemed more middle ground and is just trying to keep up with news and adjust accordingly. Didn't get to talk to any others.
Patients seem to fall into similar camps. Haven't seen the other nurses this week, one was due to go to abroad next week and I'm assuming won't be now. Both are over 60 (as are several of the GPs) so I'm hoping they stay safe. Not sure yet what will happen with work, I can see my clinics getting empty as people cancel things like annual reviews (I don't want our high risk patients coming in anyway!) and other less essential things, but people with long term wound care needs will still need to come in so we will have to have some kind of service. Home visits won't necessarily be lower risk for either us or the patients and the community teams are already stretched - I would do home visits if I needed to though.
I'd happily volunteer to do community testing (if any were happening!), I do expect we may be asked to join the acute sector at some point and have warned DH that this might happen (he WFH so no childcare issues) - not sure how much use I'd be, never having worked in a hospital but I'm sure I could be used somewhere.

Schools wise, despite one DS having asthma, I am not too worried about them getting it and would actually rather it was sooner than later. For two reasons, one being the health service could cope better before the peak should they need hospital care and two, if I know they've had it and recovered then I will be more comfortable working long hours away from them and not having to worry so much. Of course I will likely get it when they do, or before, so then we could be out the other side of it. I don't see preventing us catching it at all as being reasonable or possible.

Never thought I would say this but I miss Brexit.

Mum in isolation with three kids says she can't get supermarket food delivery slot until late next week
"Unless there are people willing to help others people in self-isolation are going to have to go out"

Louise Mckean, 32, developed a cough and fever earlier this week, after she was told a client had been tested for coronavirus.

The cleaner from Rusholme, was told she wouldn't be tested for COVID-19, but advised to stay at home with her three young children.

And

Louise says she spoke to the NHS 111 and was told they wouldn't test her for the virus, but told her and her children to isolate for seven days.

"I followed the advice not to stockpile and when I went to ASDA the other day, there was no pasta or long life milk - everything was gone.

"When I was told to self-isolate I went on to the online shopping websites and all of them said there are no delivery slots until next Wednesday at the earliest.

"I've tried ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Ocado and Morrisons.

"I would much rather stay in as I don't want to go out and give someone coronavirus, but there is no contingency plan here."

Best lines of the article have to be

"I wish I had stockpiled now."

Followed by

"I was speaking to my 90-year-old grandma and she said things weren't even this bad during the war.

My guess re the increased testing available but also increased criteria to test, is that the models envisage capacity being reached with just those included.

Btw, the OU have suspended all face-to-face tutorials and are moving everything to online. Guess at least they are the best prepared for it!
