To be amazed at how many people are making excuses

Looking through these threads I'm feeling pretty horrified at the amount of people that either dont seem to be able to understand what self isolate actually means or are already making excuses as to why it can't possibly apply to them ?!?
Have read so many.. oh I'm not going to self isolate, I'm pretty sure it's just a cold. Can I still go for a walk. I need to go out for a run or else I'd go crazy, how am i going to walk the dog, I'd only pop to the shop really quickly

No wonder the schools aren't shutting, and we are not banning gatherings. I really can't understand how people are either not getting this or feel happy to just think sod the risk

Honestly, yes. I'm always going to put what's best for my family's situation above the health of people I do not know.

You would rather people you don’t know die than accrue a few hundred pounds of debt? What if it’s people you do know? How many degrees of separation before you take some social responsibility?

This sort of attitude is why our country is in trouble.

Putting your family first is one thing. Putting your lack of belief in debt above other people’s lives in another. I can’t believe what I’m reading.

@NastiestThing

Do you really think that you definitely won’t die of it? Or you have no friends or family that won’t die of it?

aroundtheworldyet · 13/03/2020 14:49

@StarUtopia
Are you self employed then? And work a Jon you have to go to?

For example if my cleaner was off. I would still pay her because I know how precarious that work is.

And I think there are a lot of people like me.

wishywashy6 · 13/03/2020 14:54

Just read that the uk has now got 784 confirmed cases.... that's less than 0.02% of the population. More people die from the normal flu each year but we're not all self isolating and stock piling hand sanitiser over that.
I really don't understand the panic.

NastiestThing · 13/03/2020 15:00

My credit rating is already so low I cannot even get a credit card or loan, I could not cope with a few hundreds worth of debt. And it wouldn't just be a few hundred, I rent in London and rents over 1k a month. So, tbh, seen as I wouldn't be eligible for a fucking loan anyway, looks like I'd have to let myself be evicted or risk someone's life by going to work. Yes, I'd rather a random die than my family be homeless.

Cohle · 13/03/2020 15:00

Coronavirus is more infectious than the flu and has a higher mortality rate (probably more than ten times higher). No one has any immunity to coronavirus and there is no vaccine. That is why the rate of infection is rising exponentially across the globe.

Care home here. The amount of people who refused to wash or gel their hands was shocking. We’ve since gone into lockdown - and families are kicking a big stink about not being allowed in. Even said that residents are more likely to catch from staff than family visits. I’m afraid I was a little more than blunt with them. - and he was a dentist, so in my opinion should know better.

NastiestThing · 13/03/2020 15:02

I don't live anywhere near them so it won't be me infecting them.

Cohle · 13/03/2020 15:03

No but it will be people like you. Your username is appropriate.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/03/2020 15:05

Just your ilk passing it on.

NastiestThing · 13/03/2020 15:09

Yes, people like me who can't afford to self isolate. People who at risk and can afford to self isolate shouldn't be out anyway, to protect themselves.

Cohle · 13/03/2020 15:20

So you're passing the buck to the elderly and the ill because you're to selfish not to spread the disease?

IfYoureNotIntoYoga · 13/03/2020 15:24

@Cohle but that's the point, people on this thread are saying isolate for coughs and colds just in case it's COVID-19 but the majority of us not self isolating won't actually have COVID-19! So we are not spreading it.
Honestly, wrap yourself in bubble wrap and lock all the doors if you're that worried.
But like @NastiestThing I can't not work as my family are MY priority, like your health is YOUR priority.

HeIenaDove · 13/03/2020 15:26

@JKScot4 @Straycatstrut I agree. I suspect they are gearing up to blame further spread on poorer people If tenants end up having to self isolate and then have no choice but to break quarantine to top up their electric meter.

Cohle · 13/03/2020 15:32

No one is saying that. We are saying that if you have a new, constant cough or a fever then you should follow the government advice and self-isolate for 7 days.

Do you have some epidemiological qualifications that you think make you know better than the government whether or not you are spreading it.

What on Earth would you do normally if you were ill for a week? It's hardly an unlikely scenario.

When things get bad enough people like you will be prosecuted, as they are being in Italy.

Reginabambina · 13/03/2020 15:34

@OneStepOneStumble universities are already telling students that attendance won’t be monitored. Sone a shutting down all non-ease goal face to face contact including exams and making alternative arrangements.

Reginabambina · 13/03/2020 15:39

@NastiestThing the absolute worst that could happen is you go bankrupt. It’s really not the end of the world. Your employer could go bust and the economy could tank so you could end up going bankrupt anyway. People go bankrupt all the time. It usually only lasts a year, it’s really not that big of a deal. People go bankrupt and then are back to being millionaires ten years later. Of all the things to be frightened of in life financial failure must be one of the most trivial.

NastiestThing · 13/03/2020 15:39

Oh so either way my rent is getting paid and I can't get a loan as I have no credit card. Great. Maybe all the immuno compromised should be the ones getting into debt and staying in and let the healthy ones get on with life. If they were all indoors anyway and away from family then me going to work wouldn't be an issue. People who don't need to fuck their finances and housing up shouldn't have to.

Easilyanxious · 13/03/2020 15:39

Are you meant to self isolate them if you have a cold I.e runny nose , sore throat
No high temp or cough

NastiestThing · 13/03/2020 15:41

Of all the things to be frightened of in life financial failure must be one of the most trivial

Oh well sorry I've been fucking poor for so long and hating it and I actually want to try to have a better future for my daughter financially. As I said I don't even qualify for a credit card or a phone contract due to my ratings.

ClubfootMaestro · 13/03/2020 15:46

@Easilyanxious no - self isolate for new persistent cough or high temp

Flyingpurplepeopleeater · 13/03/2020 15:47

My husbands company has been struggling since the recession. In the last 2 years we have just started to make (very small) profits again, and reduce our (large) overdraft. I am very worried about the real prospect of going under. It's not just our mortgage to think about, we need to pay our rent/suppliers/member of staff etc.
That doesn't mean I am not also very concerned about my elderly relatives and neighbours or people that are immunocompromised.

HeIenaDove · 13/03/2020 15:59

r more essentials such as the electric meter rent

You still have to go out to top it up Othewise no electric no cooking, food going off and no hot water for keeping clean including hand washing.

Its very very telling that people are blaming this on poorer people. Like i said in an earlier post its trying to shift the blame. So poorer people get blamed if it spreads further either because they have broken quarantine to top up their meter, or have been unable to keep clean due to having no electric to wash

So they will get blamed for any further spread either way.

That seems like the plan.

IfYoureNotIntoYoga · 13/03/2020 15:59

@Cohle but I won't be prosecuted as it is not LAW to self isolate!!!

If and When that is forced upon us I will 100% quarantine myself but until then absolutely not unless I am dying.
And by that point, like Italy I would hope the government will have financial help for us ALL.

And as to saying what would I normally do if I was sick and needed a week off, I would take the time off, but only because my partner would still be attending work and income coming in.
It's the point of us as joint equals financially that if we are both isolating we will be in financial difficulty.

And to the person saying bankruptcy only lasts a year then you get on with your life, it's 6 years on the credit file and many many jobs in the financial sector do not allow you to practise if you have EVER been declared bankrupt!!

That would be bye bye to my career.
