Piers Morgan right for once

Taking to Twitter, 54-year-old Piers said:
“Tonight (Wednesday evening), 1000s of Atletico Madrid fans are in Liverpool - despite their own city being in virtual lockdown, INCLUDING their own matches, because Madrid's been ravaged by Coronavirus.
This is total madness. What the hell is the British Government doing????"

I would only add this was at a time when the British government was already in possession of the facts as to the projected scale/impact of the virus on the UK. Absolutely treasonous and I do not use that word lightly.

I get schools not closing because of the impact on essential staff but who really needs to go to a football match or the Cheltenham Festival in the middle of a global pandemic? New York, despite their President being a moronic dickhead have had a shutdown of gatherings over 500 people and they are behind us.

PepePig · 13/03/2020 09:13

@BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser

The Grand National should be cancelled anyway. It's disgusting.

But yes, I can see all football matches being cancelled now, to be honest. If Arteta has it then the chances are a lot of the Arsenal squad and staff will too. Probably passed on to other teams, referees etc. Hudson Odoi also sounds like he's caught it too. The spread in football has begun and the only way to stop it, is to cancel.

At least they should recover swiftly though, luckily.

ThanosSavedMe · 13/03/2020 09:16

I’ve always heard it as broken clock but oh well same thing!

BodiesMakeForGoodFertiliser · 13/03/2020 09:18

I think people should be now given information about how to make themselves as financially safe as possible, with the market movements looking concerning, rather than "sing happy birthday Boris while washing your hands"...

EvilPea · 13/03/2020 09:20

Isn’t The theory cancel it and the fans will go to the pub to watch it where, due to the conditions, more are likely to catch it?

Although it is bloody ridiculous having that many people from an infected area coming over? Perhaps the happy medium for now is cancel internationals but carry on with uk games?

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 13/03/2020 09:21

I'm finding it very uncomfortable to be in a place where I can agree with both Piers Morgan and Jeremy Hunt on the same day. Most discombobulating.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/03/2020 09:21

YANBU
As for clocks either / or. But deffo applies in this context.

tootiredtoconga · 13/03/2020 09:22

It comes as no surprise that this government is more interested in protecting the economy than it is in saving lives. After all, those most likely to die from Covid-19 (the elderly, those with severe and complex health issues) are probably also "economically inactive". Boris Johnson could not give less of a shit about protecting the vulnerable.

LillianGish · 13/03/2020 09:24

I think the answer is that people should not go if they are feeling unwell, but looking at another thread where a mum is asking if she and her dc need to stay home for seven days because they all have cold symptoms including a cough I can see that this is a vain hope. That being the case you are as likely to catch being coughed or sneezed on in the supermarket, bus, pub etc as you are at a big event. What is required is individual responsibility not blanket bans. Blanket bans make it appear that something is being done and engender a false sense of security. I live in France which has just announced it is closing its schools - probably the best way of guaranteeing the nation’s grandparents are infected.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/03/2020 09:25

I am with Piers on this one too. And you have it spot on @tootiredtoconga.

contentedsoul · 13/03/2020 09:28

Hmm
Ageing population
House shortage
Massive windfall via inheritance tax

Maybe it’s in the governments interest....just sayin.

Italy has the biggest ageing problem in Europe I read.

It all sounds too damn convenient.

I’ve probably been reading too many conspiracy theories.

LizzieMacQueen · 13/03/2020 09:31

Agree re Jeremy Hunt suddenly talking sense (ish) on Newsnight.

But the takeaway from yesterday is we cannot be trusted (fatigued ffs!) to self isolate now if schools close.

DoubleAction · 13/03/2020 09:34

If Madrid is on lockdown how are they getting out (and back in)?

Everyone loves the word but I dont think it's at all clear what it means.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 13/03/2020 09:37

Absolute dickheads. They should never have been allowed to leave Madrid.

lmcneil003 · 13/03/2020 09:37

because Madrid's been ravaged by Coronavirus

My parents are there now and they must have forgotten to tell me about bodies littering the streets...

Bathroom12345 · 13/03/2020 09:38

He was right when he questioned Lisa Nandy about men participating in women’s sports. She was hopeless and wouldn’t give a straight answer. Where do they get these people from. Labour are completely stuffed for potentially a generation.

Wheresthebeach · 13/03/2020 09:40

So in one day I agree with Jeremy Hunt and Piers Morgan. It's official...the world is ending.

RoyalCorgi · 13/03/2020 09:42

I wish people would stop saying things like "it pains me to agree with Piers Morgan". So what, really? Few people are wrong about everything. (Donald Trump, perhaps.) Piers has been right about gun control and he's been right about the threat to women's sport from allowing men to identify as women.

Judge an argument on its merits, not on the person making it.

Bathroom12345 · 13/03/2020 09:48

I agree re Piers views. Trump is a popular kicking post but millions of Americans voted for him.

I am getting fatigue already regarding the experts coming out saying they know best and we are all ending up being horribly confused.

EvilPea · 13/03/2020 09:54

But the takeaway from yesterday is we cannot be trusted (fatigued ffs!) to self isolate now if schools close.

My husband is a self employed tradesman, he would struggle to isolate / physically can’t work from home.
Whilst he’d do it if he had symptoms, we couldn’t survive until June.
Most of his friends are the same.

Egg · 13/03/2020 09:54

Evilpea how can the fans watch a match in the pub if the match has been cancelled? I think that thought was if they were going to go ahead with matches but not let the fans attend.

1forsorrow · 13/03/2020 09:55

BodiesMakeForGoodFertilizer In my defence I have hangover from hell and forgot how time works. I was feeling a bit down and fed up and you made me laugh out loud so thank you.

EvilPea · 13/03/2020 09:56

Yes they’d have to cancel it to stop the pub affect.

DoubleAction · 13/03/2020 09:56

If you just listened to the experts I don't think you'd be terribly confused at all Bathroom. I think they've been exceptionally clear. It's all the people who know what they want to happen and are determined to invent "science" to support it that are confusing you.

MintyMabel · 13/03/2020 09:59

He was right in the election with the new nurses, when he said they aren't new nurses, they're just the same nurses which haven't left

Just as with everything else, he simply trots out anything he thinks will appeal to the masses and get his RT and mentions up on twitter. This was not some uncovered gem of truth, it was widely reported, same with police numbers.

The day he tweets an “opinion” that is widely unpopular, then I’ll believe he is actually giving up what he really thinks.

He is an odious little man.
