Piers Morgan right for once

Taking to Twitter, 54-year-old Piers said:
“Tonight (Wednesday evening), 1000s of Atletico Madrid fans are in Liverpool - despite their own city being in virtual lockdown, INCLUDING their own matches, because Madrid's been ravaged by Coronavirus.
This is total madness. What the hell is the British Government doing????"

I would only add this was at a time when the British government was already in possession of the facts as to the projected scale/impact of the virus on the UK. Absolutely treasonous and I do not use that word lightly.

That being the case you are as likely to catch being coughed or sneezed on in the supermarket, Does it work like that? I mean if you are in the supermarket there might be anything from a handful of people up to maybe 100, at a big event there might be thousands so surely you are more likely to be in contact with someone infected just because in a group of say 5000 there is 50 times the chance of there being someone infected compared to a supermarket with 100.

I'm not good on probability so I might be wrong but that seems logical to me.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 13/03/2020 10:01

We may well start cancelling big events and close schools but for the moment the measures to self isolate if unwell etc are thought to be approriate for this stage of DELAY which aims to trickle the speed of infections so as to allow the NHS to cope and also start to build a her d immunity as this virus will be back next year. A very convincing explanation was on radio 4 this morning. Apparently close contacts are more of a threat than a crowd. I will not be attending any big events but that is my choice. I realise there are conflicting opinions in the virologists and hope they put out more detailed information. I do wish we could listen to virologists and immunologists rather than journalists and the expert Joe public. We are a few weeks behind Italy

DoubleAction · 13/03/2020 10:03

"We can't be trusted to self isolate"

"We" are not all nice middle class families with perfect children who will happily use the time in educational pursuits, stable jobs that will continue to pay salaries....

Very many people will have no income. Vulnerable children and teens will have no safeguarding checks, there would be a huge increase in DV, there would likely be looting (see no income) plus after time, especially if it seems to be working, people will just be bored and decide the risk is worth it to try and carry on.

Can you imagine what weeks of being confined to home with the added stress of not knowing if you have a job to go back to will do to MH? And these are just a few of the issues.

EvilPea · 13/03/2020 10:05

Hasn’t the divorce rate soared in China has a result of isolating with families?

VegetableMunge · 13/03/2020 10:05

He's sometimes right, sometimes wrong, like most people. This is one of the occasions where he's right.

How do you think a billion in China have coped the last 6-8 weeks? Do you think they've been enjoying the shut down? Are they just made of sterner stuff in a crisis? Isn't it time for people to just show a bit of that backbone that us Brits supposedly have in abundance for the greater good?

OP posts:
DoubleAction · 13/03/2020 10:12

We have no idea if they have coped. It's been enforceable because people who don't comply in China "disappear".

Are we really suggesting we want that?

AnotherNightWatering · 13/03/2020 10:13

If we could stop the virus altogether, it would make sense to cancel the match. However, we can't - we need to have a controlled spread (as far as it is possible) to gain herd immunity.

In addition, so far very few people have it. The risk of getting it at the football match is therefore low. In a couple of weeks, it may be different.

We could all isolate ourselves, gain no herd immunity, then go through this all again at the start of winter, which is much more risky.

EvilPea · 13/03/2020 10:17

I think this is it anothernight
When the other countries come out of lockdown they are at risk again.
To a certain degree we need to catch it as a form of vaccine, but control that so the nhs can cope.

Deelish75 · 13/03/2020 10:21

Yes Peirs Morgan is right on this one.

Three Premier League teams (Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal) are now self isolating. I can't see any Premier League matches going ahead this weekend.

TheRealHousewife · 13/03/2020 10:23

@QuizzlyBear We get told to sing happy birthday while washing our hands. Twice. 🥳

You did give a much needed chuckle 🤭 Thank you 🙏

Cam77 · 13/03/2020 10:25

@EvilPea
Not sure. But I'm sure a divorce is preferable to a fortnight in intensive care.

Likely 5,000-10,000 already.

Well I'm old and the advice for me is not to go on a cruise Confused

DoubleAction · 13/03/2020 10:28

I everyone with a cough or a temperature is at home, there will be no one at any event with contagious CV!

aroundtheworldyet · 13/03/2020 10:31

I mean I listened to the expert on the radio today and it makes perfect sense to try and control the spread. Peaking in summer.
People need to get it, we need to have some kind of self immunisation from it.

It will come back and in order for it to survive it will most likely mutate into a less strong strain.

This is from the world leading expert on pandemics. Who btw is British and is in charge of it.

So yes I trust him more than I trust the fuckwit piers Morgan

AnotherNightWatering · 13/03/2020 10:36

Likely 5,000-10,000 already.
The UK population is more than 66 million, so that really is a tiny number, and most will be at home, not passing on the disease.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 13/03/2020 10:39

I don't know what's most frightening right now ... Coronagheddon or how often I'm agreeing with Piers Morgan these days Confused

LouMumsnet · 13/03/2020 10:41

We've moved this to the Corona virus topic now, folks. Flowers

SudokuQueen · 13/03/2020 10:44

@contentedsoul

Even if it's not a plan by the government, it was obvious that Boris would never give a shit. He didn't care about the towns flooding, he doesn't care about people dying, he doesn't care about anyone. He's probably got bets on how many people will die.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 13/03/2020 10:44

I'm being thick here apologies, but can someone explain if immunity occurs as a result of catching it then recovering or can only an immunisation provide it?

aroundtheworldyet · 13/03/2020 10:47

@tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz
It’s called herd immunity
Both the virus and our body changes - the virus getting weaker in order to survive in more people. The virus doesn’t actually want everyone dead! Then it would die too.

And then our bodies create their own ability to self immunise. So in the end, it becomes like the common cold.

aroundtheworldyet · 13/03/2020 10:47

people to self-isolate at home for seven days if they have a new and persistent cough for up to four hours and a temperature of 37.8C and above. These are considered to be mild symptoms of coronavirus and people do not need to ring 111 for advice unless their condition dramatically worsens, the government said. Following this advice is thought to be an effective way of reducing the peak number of cases by up to 20%. The seven-day period is based on people being infectious just as their symptoms start to show and for a week afterwards. In the future, the government may ask a whole household to isolate for two weeks if one person is affected

I really don’t think this is hard to understand. It’s quite clear.

1forsorrow · 13/03/2020 10:49

I everyone with a cough or a temperature is at home, there will be no one at any event with contagious CV Except for the young fit people who have it so mildly they don't notice.

Delatron · 13/03/2020 10:50

I wouldn’t call 10,000 people very few people.
