The Brazilian government has confirmed that president Jair Bolsonaro’s communications secretary Fabio Wajngarten has coronavirus just days after meeting Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, Dom Phillips, in Rio de Janeiro, reports. (guardian)

It said in a statement, confirming an earlier newspaper report:

The medical service of the Presidency of the Republic adopted and is adopting all the necessary preventative measures to preserve the health of the president of the Republic and the entire presidential committee which accompanied him on the recent trip to the United States, as well as presidential palace staff.

It added:

This is because one of the members of the group, Fabio Wajngarten, secretary of communication of the presidency of the Republic, is carrying the new coronavirus Covid-19, confirmed in a control test.

Wajngarten shared photos of himself with Trump and Mike Pence during the trip, as well as Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro and Trump dined on Saturday at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. In one video Wajngarten (wearing glasses) is seen just behind Trump and Bolsonaro.

The US government has been informed “so that they can adopt the necessary cautionary measures,” the statement said. Wajngarten is in home quarantine.

Laughing at people thinking Sturgeon gives a shit. The government are protecting us by not taking drastic action too soon. Use your brains ffs. Watch people moan if they close the school so can’t work which means they’re skint. No doubt Boris will get bashed then as well.

It’s just totally bizarre that countries with around 50 cases per million people are seeing government officials diagnosed with this.

Are they just unlucky or are the numbers actually way out?

.@CMO_England has confirmed two further people in England who tested positive for coronavirus (#COVID19) have died.

Both patients had underlying health conditions.

The majority of over 80's who get it will recover. But a very large number will not.

Dramalamaindeed · 12/03/2020 16:23

If they expect peak to be In the next two months, do you think they will lockdown the country at peak/before peak/ never?

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 16:24

@MissPoldark I suspect numbers are higher, plus politicians meet a lot of people and shake a lot of hands.

Beebityboo · 12/03/2020 16:25

DD has been unwell since October. I have underlying health issues. I feel so powerless. At least give us a choice to remove them from school without fines/threat of losing their place.

NeckPainChairSearch · 12/03/2020 16:26

The government are protecting us by not taking drastic action too soon. Use your brains ffs

Well, I'll try. However, the lack of transparent information means that it's not clear to me how the government is actually protecting us by failing to act.

How - specifically - are they protecting us?

KOKOagainandagain · 12/03/2020 16:26

It's clear how they are delaying it.

You don't count as a confirmed case unless you are tested.

But public pressure to act increases as confirmed cases increase.

Ergo - restrict testing, create barriers to testing, delay results.

Result - official figures are low and delay is achieved.

JemimaPuddleCat · 12/03/2020 16:26

So if you have any symptoms, you're to self isolate for 7 days?
What fucking use is 7 days when the incubation period is 14 days + ?!?

A nursing home in #Basingstoke has become the first care home for older people to be hit by #coronavirusuk. Oakridge House been closed to visitors after a person tested positive.

For Wales
Vaughan Gething, Wales' Health Minister told the conference closing schools was not an "appropriate step to take" at this time.

Lumene · 12/03/2020 16:28

Really good point:

It’s just totally bizarre that countries with around 50 cases per million people are seeing government officials diagnosed with this.

HasaDigaEebowai · 12/03/2020 16:29

I think the rationale seems to be that they're protecting us by delaying because they know we have a high proportion of idiots in the country who won't do as they're told for very long or at all and so if they lock us down now then it might be too soon.

Norwegian Air makes half its staff redundant
Norwegian Air has cancelled 4,000 flights and laid off nearly half its staff.

A lot more of this to come :(

Delatron · 12/03/2020 16:29

Yes they will delay it by asking everyone with symptoms to stay at home and they won’t test them. So numbers will not reflect reality which is what they want. Voila the tactic is working.

BarbedBloom · 12/03/2020 16:30

My absolute favourite tweet which sums up my feelings:

Looking forward to Boris Johnson emerging from the #CobraMeeting sporting a stupid fucking shit-eating grin and with his hair looking like he just got rage-bummed in a hedge by an escaped gorilla, and telling us all to lick a stranger’s face so we can develop herd immunity.

MovinOnUp · 12/03/2020 16:30

@Beebityboo
I agree they should give us a choice to remove them from school without fines/threat of losing their place.
At this stage I feel keeping the schools open is an economic decision rather than one taken to keep people safe. (Otherwise, Why are many countries with less cases closing schools?)
So if you as a parent decide to keep your child off school you should be able to make that choice without repercussions.

NewYearNewTwatName · 12/03/2020 16:30

JemimaPuddleCat I think the 7 days is based on on average it takes 5-6 days to appear after another 7 days you'll know if you are getting better or not.
