So we’re in the Delay stage. How is this any different? Nothing has changed apart from they now don’t want to know if you have symptoms.

anonacfr · 12/03/2020 16:07

My school year WhatsApp group was full of complaints about 'fake news and hysteria' and how bored they are of hearing about it... Hmm

Newjez · 12/03/2020 16:07

@Sunshinegirl82

*Genuine question if the WHO thought everyone should lockdown and close schools why wouldn't they just say so? Why say it's an individual decision for governments?

They could easily say, it's for individual governments to decide but we recommend you close schools and lockdown. They haven't.*

I imagine there is a lot of politics involved. I guess they can't be too critical of the governments that fund them.

Cremebrule · 12/03/2020 16:08

The 7 day thing is confusing. When is it 7 days and when 14? They’re going to have their work cut out trying to explain that clearly to the public.

Inkpaperstars · 12/03/2020 16:08

I think it means that now instead of concentrating on not containing, they are going to focus on not delaying.

WouldShouldCould · 12/03/2020 16:08

So how are they delaying it?

artisanparsnips · 12/03/2020 16:09

DD's secondary school has hand gel by the entrance to the canteen and someone checking that they have all used it. So it's very much possible.

Although they are also asking that every child brings anti bac gel in which is easier said than done.

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 16:10

Ink haha

All these countries closing their borders, bit late, pretty useless now. Just homegrown virus.

Exochord · 12/03/2020 16:11

It seems to me that they’re now doing even LESS than before. Nothing has changed apart from they won’t be testing people any more.

Bumblesbumbles · 12/03/2020 16:12

@Exochord - think you’re right. So genuinely depressing

AvocadoOwl · 12/03/2020 16:13

The 7 day isolation thing for sniffles is surely completely unenforceable Hmm

BiBiBirdie · 12/03/2020 16:14

Regarding the no school trips announcement, that's a given, all school trips abroad at our school, including a skiing trip, were officially cancelled last night. That wasn't by the school, it was Interski who cancelled the ski one and I forget the company who cancelled France
So now they're going to act like that's their idea and take credit for their hand being forced.

So, still nothing of any merit. Which proves the theory they want us all the get herd immunity.
Maybe, to give the benefit of the doubt to Whitty, they have worked out they won't find it as easy to make a vaccine. Afterall, why was one not worked on during or after SARs or MERs?
We can't just assume this magic medicine will appear next year sometime. We have lots of illnesses we can't vaccinate against as we know, and this seems to be resistant to other stuff.

Lynamic · 12/03/2020 16:15

MissPoldark Italian newspaper apparently from source Higher Institute of Health Italy that over a hundred child cases. I hope it isn't hospital admissions but would not surprise as Chinese children had 2.5 % severe case rate. Have seen some videos from Iran. Unfotunately that's the information available to us.

BiBiBirdie · 12/03/2020 16:15

As for isolation being suggested, unless they enforce it, with fines like China, there is no way this will work. We've already had people ignoring advice and going into work. Just because Boris blusters on a mic later on doesn't mean people will take any notice.

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 16:16

Work on a vaccine stopped after they stopped the spread of SARS.

ofwarren · 12/03/2020 16:16

Exactly @AvocadoOwl
It's only going to be advisable surely?
There is literally no way of enforcing that!

Can someone confirm if overseas school trips are cancelled in England aswell? No mention on guardian or bbc.

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 16:16

@Butternutbrownie Thanks for explaining your reasoning behind it. I don't quite know what we can or will do.

My Mum has COPD and my Dad has asthma. So I daren't sent my germ carrier to them.

Husband works in retail but has no leave 'til April.

I work in an office.

  • HR have said that if schools close we would have to leave it as unpaid or annual leave. Even if I cancelled my planned hols, I would only have 13.5 days.
  • My boss has said I would have to sort out childcare and can't work from home because my job is office based.
  • My MD has said he will buy a laptop and sort out me working from home.

So I'm up shit creek as I don't know what the fuck would happen.

Sophie Gregoire Trudeau's symptoms started shortly after she returned to Canada from a speaking engagement in London (Guardian).

KarenTookTheKids · 12/03/2020 16:17

Just wanted to point out yet another untrue post here, champions league has not yet been delayed until 2021 like posted here, it is being discussed and that may be an option - nothing decided yet! All these dodgy tabloid headlines being posted here as fact are so frustrating. I know I keep saying it, but I really wish people would only post facts and not speculation presented as fact.

MissPoldark · 12/03/2020 16:17

Someone said something about how they are sure workplaces are stepping up cleaning. Honestly our place gets hoovered and a flick over with the same cloth used in multiple offices. Door handles are never wiped. I suspect the cleaners would spread it more than stop it spreading

Sounds about the same for our place. The guy doesn’t seem to know the first thing about cleaning, spends most of the time on fag breaks.

Unfortunately @karentookthekids I'm not going to go into each news article individually and try and find the facts behind the information.
If you want to do that, that's fine.

@plaidpyjamas that's what I need to know too , dd's school sent out a message today staying that the Easter trip to America is still going ahead...

SistemaAddict · 12/03/2020 16:20

Back now and on the way home an email was sent out from school saying that unless the government say to close schools then it will remain open. It seemed to say it would remain open even if there was a confirmed case and not to keep your child off unless 111 told you to.

I'm confused by the self isolation for 7 days thing. I've had a sore throat and headache and tight chest with a bit of a cough for going on a week now. GP didn't say I needed to do anything as I'd not been abroad or in contact with a positive case. Raised temps are a thing in our house along with snot.

I hope fuckface has got something worthwhile to say at 4.30pm but I'm not holding my breath.
