UK Ministers, officials, medical officers and the chief of the defence staff have arrived for the latest emergency Cobra meeting.

The meeting is expected to confirm that the UK has officially moved from the contain to the delay phase as set out in a plan for tackling Covid-19. source

Lweji · 12/03/2020 13:31

Not sure they were ever under actual contain...

FourTeaFallOut · 12/03/2020 13:31

Oh, and without shitty letters about attendance and threats from the school would be a bonus.

mac12 · 12/03/2020 13:31

Can someone please explain why it will peak in the summer if we do nothing to contain it? Won’t the peak just be bigger? How many bodies do we think are acceptable in pursuit of a ‘managed peak’? I cannot understand it & wish they would open their model to peer scrutiny.
It also seems to be based on the belief of herd immunity but this is a Coronavirus, not flu. It’s possible there will be immunity, as with common cold corona viruses, in which case surely this strategy is hugely reckless?
Can someone help me make sense of this?

*meant to say NO immunity like the other Coronavirus Ed

itsallwrongisntit · 12/03/2020 13:32

I don't get all this "have you been to an affected country?"....I mean, as it stands, we live in one don't we???

Dramalamaindeed · 12/03/2020 13:32

What do you think the increase in cases will be for the UK today?

I’m trying to see what Italy’s cases were on a day to day rise at this stage to see how we are comparing but I’m struggling to locate this information. Does anyone know where to find this?

JeansNTees · 12/03/2020 13:33

There is still a stigma around CV which is not helping. That plus not knowing where exactly the cases are. I saw near the end of BBC South Today that a care home in Basingstoke has CV - no word from the council though, just a case from 3rd March on their website. Aren't care homes a really high priority right now? I hope they are testing staff and visitors.

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 13:33

@shanghaidiva fingers crossed the ongoing restrictions are successful and China can stay on top of the virus until the vaccine arrives. The Chinese people have already been through enough!

I’m wondering if the meeting wasn’t held till 1.30 (rather than, you know-9am like most emergency meetings are) because they were waiting for today’s figures?

Sunshinegirl82 · 12/03/2020 13:34

We are not doing "the opposite". We are using different methods to slow spread at present. At the end of the day we don't know for definite which approach will be most successful but the idea that there is no plan at all just isn't true.

WouldShouldCould · 12/03/2020 13:34

And what if there is no immunity and we just keep spreading it and recatching it?

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 13:35

It was 387 in England yesterday with a total of 456 in the UK (36 in Scotland, 15 wales and 18 in NI). I suggest mid to high 400s

They'll be getting the figures in real time.

Thank you so much to those appreciating my frustration and for your good wishes - very much helps my self-calming x

Lweji · 12/03/2020 13:35

How many bodies do we think are acceptable in pursuit of a ‘managed peak’?

This is always the case with any disease.
Governments and societies need to balance the need for sustaining that society with reducing transmission of infectious diseases, or any risk at all.
Like cars. There would be no car accidents if we all stayed at home or walked everywhere, but it's not desirable.

4cats2kids · 12/03/2020 13:35

Anyone know what the fines are if we keep our kids home?

defthand · 12/03/2020 13:36

The problem with this whole herd immunity the gov is pushing is that there is no clear understanding of how immunity develops to this virus yet. There have been cases of possible reinfection, suggesting immunity is hard to build up and/or fragile.

We do not develop long standing immunity to the four coronaviruses that cause colds.

cjt110 · 12/03/2020 13:36

@fedup21 and also to coincide with an announcement after the results and close to the end of the school day...

Freezingold · 12/03/2020 13:36

@Sunshinegirl82 I’d happily look at any evidence that there is a ‘right time’ for aggressive interventions. So far I don’t see any and the government hasn’t provided any, THAT is what worries me!

I do see that a combination of approaches is key, however all of them say the earlier the better. I do not see any evidence of there being a ‘crucial point’ in the curve. South Korea for example is doing as much tracking and testing as possible which I imagine would mean it’s so strong in that aspect that social distancing is not as aggressively crucial?

ShanghaiDiva · 12/03/2020 13:36

@BookMeOnTheSudExpress
Yes, good to see a little glimmer of light up ahead!
Quarantine measures for flying back into China are strict and we have the usual horror stories of planes being stuck on the tarmac for 10 hours while someone decides how to quarantine the foreigners, but still a little glimmer!
