They've washed their hands of us already.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/03/2020 13:10

They are washing their hands of the country

Kuponut · 09/03/2020 13:10

The Cobra comment was reported on BBC news just as a one-line "the primeminster's spokesman has said that...." will no doubt be fleshed out over the afternoon.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 09/03/2020 13:10

The tories are wanting to protect the economy at all costs...... they can't have their friends losing a little bit of money can they?

Protecting the economy means protecting our pensions, our jobs and the money for public spending.

HasaDigaEebowai · 09/03/2020 13:10

@Kuponut the rules are now that anyone back from northern Italy red zones (expanded yesterday) must self isolate with or without symptoms. If you student colleague has come from the expanded red zone (likely if they've been skiing) or if theyve flown out of a lombardy airport then they have to self isolate. Tell your lecturer.

Do you seriously think only "their friends" will feel the effects of £130 billion being wiped off the FTSE this morning?

This will create redundancies, peoples savings and possibly pensions crashing. At a time when it is widely acknowledged that many people live pay packet to pay packet the consequences of a continuing catastrophic free fall of the stock market will affect 1000's of people across the nation.

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 13:11

Rome has quarantined 16 million people to beat Covid-19. The risk is that the economy suffers lasting damage before the epidemic is bested, says @LJucca t.co/QBnJh9ccW2 t.co/DGYHK1vZg0

confusedandtired99 · 09/03/2020 13:11

Did anyone expect anything else with our current politicians? Really?

MarshaBradyo · 09/03/2020 13:11

I don’t think you can dismiss the heavy impact if a tanking economy on the service providers, people cancelling extra spending. The very top will be ok.

This was posted in another thread useful to look at for how different scenarios could play out

Apricotfool · 09/03/2020 13:12

FFS I was certain wfh would at least be encouraged at this point. I work for a huge company most could wfh and I’m sure would be supported to do so by the company with a little bit of government support. This is madness.

usernameishistory · 09/03/2020 13:13

@ButterscotchHorseman

Poor taste betting on numbers of new cases. Dim view on that.

I actually thought I'd misheard the BBC presenter.

MarshaBradyo · 09/03/2020 13:13

There’s ways for the very top to make money in a falling market, there isn’t for people who are just surviving. Or small business who crash with low cash flow. They do need protecting more than the top. I’m fine with this as a consideration.

ofwarren · 09/03/2020 13:13

321 cases of coronavirus in the Netherlands, - in total. Over 50 new cases announced so far.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 09/03/2020 13:14

Taking bets on the number is in really bad taste.

What’s wrong with you? Those are people you are taking bets on.

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 13:14

If the stock market crashes, it will recover. I have lived through a few stock market crashes. It affects the rich most.

Ciwirocks · 09/03/2020 13:14

I thought we might try and learn from Italy but no, it seems we are waiting until our NHS is overloaded and people die. Great

Twisique · 09/03/2020 13:15

Has there been any news on GCSE and A Level exams yet? I saw a headline in the Times but its behind their pay wall. It said Ofqual were thinking of postponing exams.

alloutoffucks · 09/03/2020 13:15

I am also surprised they are not encouraging wfh. This has little economic cost.

Jerseygaly · 09/03/2020 13:16

05pussycatinboots
That is perfect !

I'm wondering as a pp if they are not stopping flights because of being pally with airline bosses.
Italian s need to be contained for everyone s good.
Can you imagine how fast this will go if more from abroad join on the flame.

I'm concerned about the food supply too as lots of things are handled.
And about getting post.
Tbh now even more concerned about nhs capacity.
after this there will be no Dr or nurses or maybe teachers. (And who would want to do those rolls once the understand business ha been prtected.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 09/03/2020 13:16

Ofwarren- that's the red zone in the north west.
I thought Rome had suddenly found a few million more citizens and stuck them in quarantine!

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/03/2020 13:16

World at one is good right now.
