oldqueen your situation sounds very similar to mine 2 years ago. My mum had 3C Ovarian and in the end the toll it took on her frail body was very difficult to watch. Thinking of both you and your mum, I hope she is comfortable during the time she has left.

it’s a fucking evil disease. Absolutely fucking vile.

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 22:35

@OldQueen1969
Flowers. Many have similar worries of what's to come and how it will negatively affect. Sincerely hope your DM has as comfortable last month's as possible. Wishing you strength for whats ahead and keeping on.

Hi. Just wondering if there are any stats detailing how many of those testing positive caught it from outside of UK and how many caught it in the UK? I see a lot of 'recently returned from italy/iran etc'. Hope my question makes sense.

FlamingoAndJohn · 08/03/2020 22:41

Are people returning to their country of origin from the U.K. being told to self isolate etc?

colouringinpro · 08/03/2020 22:41

pmk

WouldShouldCould · 08/03/2020 22:41

I must admit I'm uncomfortable with the threat of pulling the thread because there has been some disagreements. In general I'm not concerned if people see us as tin hat preppers, maybe we are, I truly hope that those who are laughing at me are right and that I've prepared for no reason. That would be a win for all of us. However it supportive to many to have a place to discuss possibilities.

picklemewalnuts · 08/03/2020 22:42

The knock on consequences are by far the biggest concern.

Apparently after the Ebola outbreaks, far more people than usual dies of malaria. The usual anti malaria efforts could not be sustained in the face of Ebola, with resulting loss of life.

There will be initial CV fatalities, then fatalities because emergency care is unable to respond fast enough due to CV overwhelm, then eventually when routine care is impacted for too long.

todayisnottuesday · 08/03/2020 22:42

Then please correct such posts - that would be genuinely valuable to these threads.

We've already had this conversation, remember? My uninformed, un-substantiated opinions dressed up as facts would not be anymore use to anyone than the ones I would be responding to, and I don't think mis-information is helpful in this instance.

It is not true to say that the rudeness has been a one way thing. There were LOTS of rude comments (and some silly pictures) to bear in particular implying she was not welcome to post etc simply for voicing a different opinion on what is supposed to be an open forum. She (and myself) were also accused of 'trolling' and had our past post history referred to both of which I thought were against guidelines?

Brazil reports 6 new cases of coronavirus, raising country's total to 25 t.co/eUoE2b20hL

AbsentmindedWoman · 08/03/2020 22:44

The hospital in Italy linked to above (and in the other thread) is a small, private hospital not usually used for acute emergencies. It's a hospital which has been criticised for quality of care standards. It's not the kind of hospital that ever would have enough ICU beds for a potential emergency. That it hasn't, isn't a shock, it's to be expected from a small private hospital where people tend to go and get their piles done!

What is ACTUALLY being said (on every TV chsnnel's special as I type) is that if the situation continues at the present rate, then PROBABLY bed spaces will become scarce. HOWEVER it is believed that, if the Currey measures are adhered to, then there should be a significant drop in cases being hospitalised and people testing positive within the next 15 days.

@BookMeOnTheSudExpress thank you, that's really helpful. Gives a bit more context.

OldQueen1969 · 08/03/2020 22:46

Many thanks for the good wishes from other posters - much appreciated x

It seems a huge number of people aren't actually concerned by every little cough and sniffle, and on quite a few threads even those who might be higher risk have not rushed for testing, so I'm a bit flummoxed by the idea that people are overwhelming the NHS with every sniffle. 111 will be seeing an uptick in calls because that is the advice and the triage in place means only the highest risk people are being seen - which may or may not be ideal with regard to possible community transmission, but hey ho, we have to follow the advice being given and that is what I'm observing in RL and on my FB feed. In fact according to FB the most fertile breeding ground for CV is in the proliferation of (mostly ) amusing memes........

ShanghaiDiva · 08/03/2020 22:46

@FlamingoAndJohn
In China you have to self isolate when you return : 14 days at home, even if you have no symptoms. If you are coming from Italy, Iran or Korea, the 14 days must be spent in a designated quarantine area.

Netanyahu said that the country is considering requiring a mandatory14-day quarantine for all travelers entering the country.

“We have come to the conclusion that if we take further steps, they will actually need to apply to all states,”
Netanyahu said during a briefing Sunday at the Prime Minister’s Office.
“It is pointless to do this in a small way.”

AbsentmindedWoman · 08/03/2020 22:52

Yeah, I'm not happy with pulling the thread. It's a good resource.

A certain amount of anxiety about this unfolding situation is healthy, it represents a real threat. Fear is a useful emotion, unless it gets to a point where it is unmanageable, inhibiting your assessment of the facts, or stops you processing that information.

It is quite clear that many countries are on the back foot with this and we all need to do what we can to slow the spread. That is not panicking, it is an appropriate response to the what is happening.

Stupid and blinkered to say otherwise, or to try to clamp down on people discussing and planning and processing (emotionally as well as factually).

Toxic positivity is toxic..

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 22:53

I have not seen the word trolling used anywhere.

Sorry if I'm not keeping up with this exchange, it hasn't been of great interest other than trying to keep to the best information we can, at any given time.

I hope things can remain civil now.

@usernameishistory I don't think it is going that way either, however we would all be pleased if it does. What I'm saying tho is that it doesn't matter if we are wrong, we are not afraid of being wrong, those that refuse to see the possibility are terrified of being wrong.

Egypt confirms another 33 coronavirus cases from a Nile River cruise boat that was already tied to 12 COVID19 cases t.co/1MSkVyrJKu

Interesting from those schools:

"Please note that at this stage, health authorities have not insisted on this closure or the cleaning of school
and it is not our intention to cause undue alarm.

This is our independent decision as a duty of care to our pupils and staff in order to ensure that the health and well-being of our community remains our utmost priority."

I hope the parents are supportive and that all can cope with the sudden need for 2 day childcare
