Tuesday
"It's been a bloody nightmare tbh, so many people jamming up the 111/ 999 services convinced they have/ need testing for it that people with genuine illnesses are not getting through. The ones I find most vulnerable to panicking and believing everything they read are the very elderly, and it is so upsetting to see."

To be fair, people on here aren't ringing 111 in a panic, or encouraging anyone else to.

Wehttam · 08/03/2020 22:08

Evening all. Hebe maybe these threads need a trigger warning. Plenty of us here are able to hold balanced, valid, reasoned discussions about this impending pandemic. Many people would not have a tenth of the information being posted if it weren’t for some of the main contributors here.

If people are anxious or upset about what is being posted, can you please advise them to stop reading the thread and maybe look at something else unrelated to the topic. This is a valuable tool and zapping it could potentially lead to many people being il-informed.

Thanks!

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 22:10

Ofwaren Currently self-isolation seems voluntary - I hope the Uk will consider changing this as many other countries have done
It seems a daft loophole

The Civil Contingencies act emergency ppowers enables the authorities to bring in regulations with penalties, as I posted on a previous thread.

e.g. in Germany when self-isolation has been officially advised by public health official, then it is monitored by phone and there are significant penalties for breaking isolation

Butterwhy · 08/03/2020 22:14

Someone local is in isolation having been diagnosed, they do get a phone call everyday.

OldQueen1969 · 08/03/2020 22:16

The whole NHS thing is quite a concern.

On Friday I visited my Mum who has terminal cancer and is now housebound to support her while her Macmillan nurse came to check on her. Her cancer is ovarian/omentum/peritoneal and her abdomen is hugely distended - bless her she's a size 12 everywhere but size 20 in the stomach area and now her shapely and well defined legs are showing significant oedema. At the beginning of February a scan showed very little fluid in the abdomen - it's the tumours. It has escalated significantly in the last few weeks and the nurse is going to ring on Monday with a view to getting her into hospital for a scan in case it is now enough fluid to be drained and make her more comfortable.

I asked the nurse about the possibility of the CV situation impacting this and she looked at me as if I was slightly mad until I explained my concern was not so much about transmission (although that would be shit as Mum also has COPD) but about the diverting of resources from various departments due to testing and isolation protocols etc. She said they hadn't heard anything like that and reassured us but we now have two cases in our town - very small number for the conurbation to be fair - and it does make one wonder what steps will have to be taken to ensure good practise all round.

I'm just crossing my fingers that things like palliative care and treatment of serious illnesses aren't affected negatively - or death numbers might go up in general even if people don't get CV. If that sounds like scaremongering I'm sorry, but given this whole new world we have been catapulted into I don't think it's hysterical to think round possible scenarios while also keeping as level a head as possible.

I want my Mum's last "short months" to be as comfortable and dignified as possible and the same for anyone else suffering. I want HCPs to not be overwhelmed and stressed and getting ill. I want to be able to get through this well informed, calmly and doing the best for my fellow humans. And I think most people feel the same way.

BigChocFrenzy · 08/03/2020 22:17

Butterwhy Do you know what the consequences / plans would be if they were found to have broken isolation ?

Could they be moved to quarantine facilities ?

ITV news have just said TPTB are not looking to ban sports events as there is as much chance of catching Covid-19 in a stadium as there is watching sport down the pub. Surely they aren't going to wait to impose restrictions on gatherings much longer?!

sparkly72 · 08/03/2020 22:19

Sorry I jumped on and posted that without reading the last hours posts, hence the repetition

ofwarren · 08/03/2020 22:19

I'm sorry to hear about your mum oldqueen
That's my worry too, the disruption to everything else.
My son sees his transplant consultant every 8 weeks and is waiting for a small operation and and a liver biopsy. Will these things even happen now?
Everything is so up in the air.

@BigChocFrenzy

People have chemo for different reasons, and some are more critical than others. I was on maintenance chemo for two years after reaching remission. If chemo is postponed, I imagine it would be done on a patient by patient basis, and would take into account the vulnerability of the patient, and the resources of the NHS. I'm not medically trained, but I have had cancer for a very long time.

oldqueen I am so sorry about your mum, and I hope everything possible can be done to keep her comfortable. DH finished chemo on Friday morning, it's a big worry indeed.

USA- 529 cases of coronavirus in total now.

todayisnottuesday · 08/03/2020 22:24

To be fair, people on here aren't ringing 111 in a panic, or encouraging anyone else to.

I know. I have said many times, I think a lot of the advice on here has been very considered, My objections were to a flurry of posts that contained sensationalised or misinformation.

I'm still not convinced by the post saying people should look at CAP/ HAP rates for comparison either, to the usefulness of the NEWS2 where nurses are frequently in a 1:14 plus ratio of acutely ill patients. Not nitpicking, just genuinely interested in any rationale behind that assertion.

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 22:25

Listening to all ideas here.

To be fair, all the way through the OP there are reassurances, practical steps to help yourself and links to support where anxiety is running away with anyone.

There has also been loads of support for any feeling anxious on the thread.

I was also considering (early on) linking across to that mental health thread, but I didnt want to recommend something I hadn't read.

I came here exactly because I was 'worried about CV19' and its obviously being hugely helpful.

@HebeMumsnet have you read the thread for context? Fully reviewed whats happening I mean?

Theres no bunfight going on here as that suggests a two-way street, when rudeness has come from a few specific posters who are offering nothing constructive, but throwing insults.

Thats not a two way thing, and would be unreasonable to blame regular posters, the main posters, for the actions of the few who cant be constructive.

Are you really going to consider pulling a thread for others behaviours, despite how many its helping?

Odd? Much...

"My objections were to a flurry of posts that contained sensationalised or misinformation."

Then please correct such posts - that would be genuinely valuable to these threads

OldQueen1969 · 08/03/2020 22:26

Thank you @ofwarren - best wishes and fingers crossed for your son too x The uncertainty is the problem - nature abhors a vacuum apparently and it's human nature to speculate..... we can but carry on with some semblance of hope.......

Newjez · 08/03/2020 22:26

My eldest is a worry. Currently at uni but comes home for Easter. He thinks it's just like a cold or flu, and only affects old and unwell people. We did point out that included his grandparents and parents, but he simply said we will all be fine. We may need to lock him in the cellar when he comes back.

YoursTunbridgeWells · 08/03/2020 22:26

@OldQueen1969 I’m so sorry about your mum. I agree it’s important other health care continues as normal.

Butterwhy · 08/03/2020 22:29

The Easter holidays will be interesting with people still going on holiday, and people returning from all over the country back to their hometowns. The military is interesting too, many travel back home weekends, again, that's a lot of people heading back to their part of the country and then reuniting every weekday in fairly close confines.

usernameishistory · 08/03/2020 22:32

In the interests of getting as much useful and well researched information as possible, yes, do pit forward your own assertions of better sources or where information is being misquoted @todayisnottuesday

Thats always helpful and contributes positively to the thread.

We're all about having reasoned and supportive discussions. Wink
