How is it media hysteria and over reacting to listen to what scientists, the WHO and the Government are telling us? This is what I don't understand. I'm not panicking, I'm listening to what is being said by the experts and am preparing for the outcome they say is going to happen. Should things kick off, and the Government say they will - my family will hide out at home and wait for the peak of infections to pass. The one thing you don't want to be is infected at the peak of an epidemic - our hopsitals will be overrun and under resourced.

ShanghaiDiva · 02/03/2020 21:54

@WaterSheep
For me it’s like ground hog day- just watching the numbers.
. I left China due to the virus, made it to Australia before they closed the border, managed to get to HK and avoid quarantine there, now in the uk and watching the cycle start again.

ExhaustedGrinch · 02/03/2020 21:55

@SansaSnark Thank you. I couldn't find anything specific to Venice. Local family just returned from Venice this weekend and are being verbally abused all over social media for not self isolating. I can now understand why we're not hearing from people with the virus, it's quite scary.

persin · 02/03/2020 21:56

looks like it might drag. kept dc from school thinking i'd be justified this week

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 21:56

Yes, I agree with all that @WhoWants2Know but its happened. So how is it magical thinking exactly.

WHO are saying its containable [feasibly] that was contained.

Not sure what you're point in posting is @persin

Did you want to explain if you have a point to make?

OneMoreWish · 02/03/2020 21:56

I think it was on one of the previous threads to this that I read a man was self isolating in hotel in Liverpool after returning from Italy and having symptoms.

If we have not heard by now that there has been a positive case confirmed in Liverpool would it be safe to assume he didn't have it?

AnyOldSpartabix · 02/03/2020 21:56

I’m in Norway. Population 5 million and they have confirmed 25 cases.

UK population 67 million and they’ve found 40.

I think they might have missed some. I know Norwegians travel a lot, but given the population of London is larger than the population of Norway... well I’ll leave you to do the sums...

FlamingoAndJohn · 02/03/2020 21:57

I’ve got a question.

One of the people who tested positive on Sunday had no travel connections etc.
My question is why did they test him/her for CV?

If I hadn’t travelled etc and got flu symptoms I’d assume I had flu. I wouldn’t think CV.
Did they contact their GP who thought to test them?
How many people could have it and be treating it as flu because they have no reason to think it’s cv?

ShanghaiDiva · 02/03/2020 21:59

@WhoWants2Know
Absolutely.
When we arrived in Australia back in January, all airport staff were wearing masks and HK airport had an over powering smell of dettol. Two weeks later I was at Heathrow and there appeared to be no measures in place apart from the leaflet we received on the plane.

RedToothBrush · 02/03/2020 21:59

My question is why did they test him/her for CV?

Must have been serious enough for them to wonder if it was Covid-19. Or they work in a high risk occupation like health care.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 21:59

Wrt supply issues, I do know that suppliers have bought way over their normal warehouse space to stock for brexit planning, as a buffer.

So thats already there.

Fivetoomany · 02/03/2020 21:59

Another thing to bare in mind is those who have tested negative in the UK may now test positive if they was to be retested ( I don't believe this is been done routinely?) We have seen cases like this eg. Diamond Princess. These 'negative' tests are now back in the community. Business as usual eh Borris?!

GPwife2411 · 02/03/2020 22:01

@FlamingoAndJohn - I assumed it was one of the 100 GP sites from which people symptomatic with flu would receive CV testing to look for community transmission.

This is why the 2 cases with no links to travel / travellers are particularly concerning.

It's also why I wish we had one of the surveillance GP practices in our area!

Silly question - if someone has been in the same office as a confirmed case, but management do not class them as a close contact, should they be self isolating? At Newbury Vodafone people who were in close contact with the confirmed case have been asked to self isolate, but others who were in the office at the same time but weren't CLOSE contacts have not been. Should they?

RedToothBrush · 02/03/2020 22:02

ShanghaiDiva, we are british. A foreign disease wouldn't dare set foot on our shores like it would in another country. We have super borders with lasers that zap covid-19

(Its the island nation mentality of the English Empire and Aristocracy that we are invulnerable)

Indeed. The one upside of Brexit no deal planning...

There is much irony here for both those who wanted to leave and said stockpiling was stupid and those who didn't want to leave and were worried about no deal.

usernameishistory · 02/03/2020 22:06

Ooo thatll be interesting, bearing mind the lack of testing/secrecy

RhubarbTea · 02/03/2020 22:07

How do we know which are the 100 GPs taking part in the testing thing?

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 22:07

German supermarkets report coronavirus panic buying

Just starting to notice this here in my area & social circle

At Newbury Vodafone people who were in close contact with the confirmed case have been asked to self isolate, but others who were in the office at the same time but weren't CLOSE contacts have not been. Should they?

It depends on how big the office is.

The answer is probably that its a low risk but you'd want the office scrubbed. Self isolation is probably not the thing I'd be most worried about.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/03/2020 22:10

Yep, preppers in the Uk had the advantage of a Brexit stockpile

In Germany, my Brexit stash was just a box of 32 Walkers Marmite crisps !
.... and "had" is the operative word Blush
