I think we are in good company, with Canada, France, and Spain, and that this was the right path to take. The world does not need to support people who behave as the Israelis have been behaving. They can change if they want to and trade can resume.

No my point was not that Palestinians want them there, the point is there will be a negative impact on some but Israel itself will be fine and instead the UK will the one that loses more. what happens when Uk based charities cannot operate in Israel. This short termist thinking is what screws up the middle east. The “haha that’ll teach you” without thinking through consequences.

Israel have made their intention to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from the West Bank clear. The reason these sanctions are being brought in now is because there will be no West Bank soon if Israel are left to their own devices. Israel have been escalating their expansion across the West Bank rapidly, over 60 Palestinian communities have been erased in the past 2 years by Israel, their current plans which these sanctions hope to stop are their plans to divide the West Bank in 2. There will be no long term for Palestinians if Israel have their way, they couldn't have made their intentions clearer.

Don’t be silly, the Uk is sanctioning part of a countries trade, the country is well within it’s rights to then chuck that country out. If any country sanctioned the UK or part of the Uk’s territory or trade the Uk would be well within it’s rights to tell them their consulate is no longer welcome. They have zero obligation to allow the UK on it’s soil or to trade with the UK in these circumstances. We sanction Russia, they are well within their rights to see that as a hostile act and therefore remove the consulate. It’s not abusive it’s inevitable.

I think the west bank settlers need to be chucked out but I seriously worry when this is the level of analysis or understanding displayed by people who claim to support Palestinian statehood. It’s shambolic. The UK could be providing diplomatic support, support with elections, support to Gazans support to British nationals of Palestinian origin etc etc. creating conditions to which the Israelis have to respond is the dumbest thing to do.

The UK is perfectly within it’s rights to do this, even if it’s stupid, the Israelis are perfectly within their rights to chuck out the consulate, even if it’s tit for tat. The question is not whether you are sticking it to the israelis the question is how will this impact the functioning of Britain in Jerusalem.

What Israel has really done today in retaliation to send a message to the British government that they shouldn't be messed with is classic. However that has so far not been acknowledged anywhere from what I can see.

Maybe it won't 'save the West Bank; but just for goddamned once, Israel needs to face consequences for breaking international law, and I say this as a Jewish person. There can be no justification, none, for the Settlements and what the Settlers are doing. I'd say even most Jews who will support Israel on a lot of things do not support what the Settlers are doing and they form a massive barrier, just like Hamas, to peace.

Sanctions are provocative whether peaceful or not and are dragging us deeper into a mess that I personally don’t think warrants risking any reciprocal or retaliatory moves being brought against us. Let’s sort ourselves out at home before wading into an international crisis that could see damaging economic measures affecting us all over a situation thousands of miles away.

This doesn’t actually solve any problems in the west bank but it does make life more difficult for people.

Ok so consulate is closed, British will expelled from an aid centre, British support in training PA is over and a bunch of MP’s will no longer be able to travel there.

Whereas the UK is looking down the barrel of no intelligence sharing, blocked from working with Palestinians, possibly losing a lot of trade, some MP’s can’t travel there and so on and so on. This was entirely foreseeable…. Lookee I just saw it a few posts up and I’m hardly some genius.
