People have to realise that the choice isn’t Trump bad/Iran good or vice versa.

Trump was utterly foolish to attack Iran without meaningful war aims or any kind of a coalition. Equally, though, Iran and her proxies are really bad actors in the Middle East. And I won’t grieve for the regime, their military being degraded and their uranium under tons of fractured rock.

And it is the same with the potential peace. Trump needs it for the midterms, otherwise he looks utterly foolish. But the poor Iranian people need it too. They are suffering real hardship from the bombing and the sanctions.

Iran cannot get a bomb. I wholeheartedly agree with that. So they need to give up or degrade the uranium and open the straits. In return they can become a part of the Middle East community. Ultimately they have huge potential as a nation.

I agree but doubt many others will on this board.

Some on here will never criticise Iran which you will notice if you hang around for a while. All they can say is Trump is bad (which often he is).

Summary from Iran International:

  • President Donald Trump said Iran wants an agreement with the United States but is not yet prepared to accept what he considers the “right deal.”
  • Washington is preparing another major round of economic pressure, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent due Monday to detail new Iran sanctions after promising the toughest measures yet.
  • The US maritime blockade has cut Iranian crude loadings to about 287,000 barrels a day this month, roughly one-seventh of prewar levels, according to Kpler data.
  • CENTCOM said US forces have redirected 68 commercial vessels enforcing the blockade, disabled three vessels and boarded two, while the US energy secretary said American forces have helped move more than 15 million barrels of oil and petroleum products through Hormuz.
  • Iran and Oman are discussing conditions for restoring smoother navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, while NATO members are separately considering possible contributions to protect shipping without creating a formal NATO mission.
  • Divisions over ending the war have become increasingly public in Tehran: President Masoud Pezeshkian called for ending the conflict while Iran retains leverage, while a parliament security committee member said calls for peace amount to “surrender.”

Where has anyone said Trump bad/Iran good?

Remember the JCPOA?

Not perfect but it worked.

Twiglets1 · 22/08/2026 12:46

Pezeshkian’s call to end war means surrender, lawmaker says

Iranian lawmaker Mahmoud Nabavian on Saturday directly challenged President Masoud Pezeshkian’s call to end the war, asking whether it amounted to declaring surrender.

“What do you mean when you say we should end the war now? Did we start the war?” Nabavian wrote on X. “Should we beg Trump and Netanyahu to end the war and not attack us?”

He also warned that Pezeshkian’s position could be interpreted as weakness and encourage Iran’s adversaries to press harder.

“Wouldn’t sending a signal of weakness make the enemy bolder?” Nabavian wrote.

What an exaggeration as usual. No one on this thread has advocated for Iran, or the ICG.

Like Newbutoldfather says, people on this board are pissed off because Donny and Bibi started a war with no strategy and no plan, and so the rest of the world suffers. No one in their right mind can advocate for Donny. Because he’s an absolute lying twat.

TopPocketFind · 22/08/2026 12:48

Maybe you could say which posters you mean when you say some will never criticise Iran @Twiglets1

And that is exactly what the JCPOA was about.

Plenty of criticisms of Trump but barely any for Iran.

Or maybe I've missed them in which case someone can point out examples.

See how combative they get @Newbutoldfather just because I agreed with you.

JadeHare · 22/08/2026 12:58

And just to point out, yet again, Iran were at the negotiating table before America and Israel decided to attack them. Twice.

JadeHare · 22/08/2026 13:00

An Iran International is a mouthpiece for the Pahlavi family. Not popular in Iran.

Iran is full of different people with many different views. Just like media sources in the UK - some will like them, some won't.

Twiglets1 · 22/08/2026 13:05

In any case @JadeHare what do you disagree with re the Iran International news report today?

I am no fan of theocracies or autocratic regimes but in this case, it was Iran that was attacked with the US and Israel the aggressors. I believe the majority of Iranian people would like to live in a true democracy but at the same time, they are not going to let a foreign puppet dictator be foisted upon them. Trump was convinced that if the leadership of Iran was decapitated, the Iranian people would rise up and overthrow the government. How wrong can you be. He has now created a global crisis with an asymmetric war of choice he can't get out of. You do realise the IranIntl group you are quoting are a pro-royalist/Reza Pahlavi and anti IRGC mouthpiece. They are hardly impartial.

trumpredcard · 22/08/2026 13:16

Firstly, "interdicting" vessels, but I'm sure most people realised what I meant!

Secondly, not that old Trump good/Iran bad accusation rearing its head again.<sigh>

I thought it had been agreed several threads ago that saying anything against Trump doesn't mean an automatic vote for Iran. Was it here or on another ME thread where posters had to use that specific disclaimer to avoid the accusations, then ended up getting their posts reported and deleted?

Recognising that Iran's use of asymmetrical warfare and the resilence of its people made Trump's war into a David v Goliath situation, does not automatically mean that posters don't recognise the regime's harshness towards dissenters and how unequally females are treated.

What is wrong with quoting from a source that is an "anti IRGC mouthpiece"? Some media sources could be said to be "anti Trump mouthpieces" but that is never questioned on here, even the IRGC propaganda videos aren't (except by me).

Shouldn't we all be against the IRGC? They terrorise their own people as well as other countries.

Why does any implied criticism of the IRGC always & inevitably pivot to Trump?

What is incorrect about the report from Iran International that I quoted today that you have to complain about it? Other posters quote from X or other social media sites with no complaint and who knows how biased those sources are.

Disclaimers aren't necessary. A bit of balance in holding the IRGC to account for their actions is. Which includes not minimising their behaviour or immediately pivoting to Trump when they are criticised.

The regime committed more than a bit of "harshness towards dissenters", they murdered tens of thousands of Iranians.

It is why I don't quote from biased websites. If I'm discussing Gaza, I don't quote from Al Jazeera for example if I can avoid it.

JadeHare · 22/08/2026 13:19

Yes. If only I had a redacting mechanism like they used on the Epstein files.

TopPocketFind · 22/08/2026 13:30

I don't support the IRGC, I don't support Trump

There is your balance

Squeezingwildoranges · 22/08/2026 13:31

@Twiglets1 "Shouldn't we all be against the IRGC? They terrorise their own people as well as other countries.". Like many Iranians, I'm not one but I know a quite a few, you can dislike the IRGC intensely but at the same time, in this case, see that it is the US and Israel who are in the wrong. Many Iranians who would like to see the IRGC and the clerics gone with a liberal democracy replacing them, are incredibly proud of their country in this situation.

Twiglets1 · 22/08/2026 13:38

JadeHare · 22/08/2026 13:18

Well point one for starters. How many times has Donny said this to date? And yet, I see no deal.

Some of the detail in the report was new to me some was repetition. No different in that regard to all the other information that other people post on this board. For example, I did not know that Monday is when Scott Bessent will detail new Iran sanctions, or the information about NATO or about divisions over ending the war becoming increasingly public in Tehran.

I thought it was an interesting report and pretty factual. The reports that other people post get either commented on or ignored if the information is not of interest. You could have ignored this report if you already knew it all.

Again @Newbutoldfather the pivot to criticising me is all because I agreed with you that "People have to realise that the choice isn’t Trump bad/Iran good or vice versa".

Newbutoldfather · 22/08/2026 13:38

@Squeezingwildoranges ,

‘I am no fan of theocracies or autocratic regimes but in this case, it was Iran that was attacked with the US and Israel the aggressors. I believe the majority of Iranian people would like to live in a true democracy but at the same time, they are not going to let a foreign puppet dictator be foisted upon them.

I suspect the vast majority of women would rather a non misogynistic foreign puppet than the IGRC.

At the beginning of the war, there were a lot of civilians interviewed who welcomed the attack. However, you can’t rise up without weapons of the backing of the army, and that was never going to happen. Trump (and Netanyahu) totally betrayed the people by making no effort to arm them or put some helicopter gunships up to support those rebelling.

‘Trump was convinced that if the leadership of Iran was decapitated, the Iranian people would rise up and overthrow the government. How wrong can you be. ‘

That is very true. It is very hard to win if you are a democracy and you don’t have the full backing of your country, so you can put boots on the ground. Trump was very foolish (and misled by Netanyahu) to believe an air campaign would achieve much given all the history of this type of adventurism.
