But the thread is not about Gaza.

If a UN commission said something Iran done was or is a war crime, then that is good enough for me. I am sure it would be for you too.

Whether it’s good enough for you is irrelevant.

There has not yet been a legal judgment about whether Israel have committed genocide or not. I will wait for the courts to decide seeing as even the UN themselves acknowledge that it’s for the courts to decide.

Fair enough. That will be many years away, if ever.

Are you applying the same standard to war crimes ?

TopPocketFind · 07/04/2026 12:39

Trump has already stated that he is not worried about war crimes

AgingLikeGazpacho · 07/04/2026 12:41

TopPocketFind · 07/04/2026 11:31

Surrender?

This war was never about a regime change or the Iranian people, Trump has made that very clear

Agree with this.

Plus where is the urgency coming from on the American side that they're so willing to cause widespread destruction and potential warcrimes for the sake of getting an agreement on a tight deadline?

The regime doesn't care about death, either their own or that of their citizens. On the contrary they see it as martyrdom. They recently gave a statement where they said bridges could be rebuilt but the opportunity to teach America a lesson comes only once. They have very little to gain from surrendering - in their eyes they have more to gain from digging their heels in and making demands that they will not veer from.

Larijani is dead, however his Kantian perspective lives on - in their view it is not the outcomes of actions that matter, but the actions themselves. The reason Iranian officials do not concede on certain points is because they are core tenets of their belief and they are seen as non negotiable.

In order for America to make headway with meaningful negotiations, they need to stop trying to strong arm on points that the Iranian government will never capitulate on and focus on where actual movement can be made.

Some progress had been made on these fronts in the negotiations that were held days before the war started. Now it seems that America is struggling to even get to status quo, let alone improve things from what they were pre-February. They've now managed to kill a bunch of more "moderate" members of the Iranian leadership, enable more hardliners to take their place, and weakened their diplomatic capabilities by sowing distrust and undermining the value of sitting down for negotiations.

The United States has carried out strikes on what it claimed are military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island, according to a report by Axios citing a senior US official.

Now you’re attempting to go round in circles.

You were the one who started this by picking on me for referring to the targeting of a desalination plant in Kuwait (by Iran) as a war crime on one post, and then as a potential war crime on another and then as probably a war crime.

If I in future always refer to war crimes as “potential war crimes” will you do the same re the claim of genocide in the war in Gaza?

Saw that. But Trump said all military things are destroyed there. For sure more could be sent since, but Trump also said he destroyed their boats.

I see Isreal has also hit a rail bridge in Iran. I do not really understand why on that. For what regime change purpose ?

Note, I am not even suggesting either is a war crime. I just can't see why.

TopPocketFind · 07/04/2026 13:06

Iran has already made clear that whatever civilian infrastructure the US targets on Tuesday night it will correspondingly target in the Gulf states.

"A whole civilisation will die tonight" Trump's latest rant. I'm dumbfounded this kind of chilling rhetoric is allowed continue. He is threatening the entire population of Iran with death. Even if these are empty words with no substance it is still sick and twisted

@AgingLikeGazpacho I hope your friends and family remain safe and well in Iran.

It is so frightening. He really should not be allowed to say such things and I don't know why his advisors are not stopping him.

BerthaPotts · 07/04/2026 13:31

Any Americans on this thread? If yes, how do your friends and family feel about Trump's increasingly erratic and dangerous posts.

As potential crimes go, war or whatever, he wants to be the biggest.

Complete and total regime change? When did that happen?

Pacificsunshine · 07/04/2026 13:46

I have family in America. They think Trump is a dangerous, deluded narcissist. They will all vote Democrat in the November midterms.

There is little chance that Trump’s cabinet will invoke section 4 of the 25th amendment. I think the saner ones know this is what they should do, but they are stuck in a classic prisoners’ dilemma. They are too craven and ambitious to try. It makes you miss Mike Pence!

Who did they vote for in the 2024 election?

Thanks for responding, it is reassuring to hear that there are Americans who are as aghast as we are.

Why - did you think for a moment that all Americans support Trump?

Not even all of MAGA support Trump, let alone all of America.

I don’t know. I don’t ask. But I am hearing a lot on the family WhatsApp chat lately.

Maga Republicans are a long way off the right in British politics. Reform doesn’t even come close.

I think i was expecting (hoping) to hear MAGA republicans speak out strongly against Trump after the latest madness.

Ok good - was surprised to see you referring to it as "reassuring" that there are Americans who are aghast at Trump's behaviour.

"A whole civilisation will die tonight" Trump's latest rant. I'm dumbfounded this kind of chilling rhetoric is allowed continue. He is threatening the entire population of Iran with death. Even if these are empty words with no substance it is still sick and twisted

Thank you, I feel genuinely sick to the pit of my stomach. I can't believe that no-one in the USA has the power/is willing to remove him at this point.

How can anyone of sound mind say in the same thought "god bless the great people of iran" whilst simultaneously threatening to kill a whole civilisation.

And yet people still bleat on about Iran's human rights record as if it justifies this madman threatening to murder swathes of Iranians for his own ego / Hegseth's crusade.

Shame on anyone who was supporting this war on behalf of Iranian people. Shame on anyone who tried to peddle the lie that this was about liberating Iranians. Shame on anyone who wasn't outspoken about the depravity of US/Israeli actions in this war. If there is a bloodbath tonight, you are all partly responsible for tacitly supporting this band of deranged pirates murder and loot a nation.

I'm so incredibly upset. I honestly don't put it past them to use a nuclear bomb - Hegseth's removal of top tier US generals has been deeply concerning. God knows what the fuck they are planning for tonight.

And no, this isn't the regime's fault for not surrendering - the USA removed Mossadegh in 1953 for the sheer audacity of wanting to nationalise Iran's own oil. They then removed the Shah in 1979 for also prioritising Iran's own national interests. The USA helped put these Mullahs in charge. And now they're coming in to blow them up? For fuck's sake see the fucking pattern - it has never been about liberating PEOPLE, it has always been about USA's puppeteering and GREED. They are threatened by any power that they can't control, even when it isn't actively threatening them (Mossadegh and the last Shah's removals prove this isn't just about the current regime). Why should the Mullahs surrender to a bunch of pirates? What happened to the concept of sovereignty?

So if Trump does follow through with widescale death of civilians, don't you dare place the blame of Trump's actions on the regime. Put the blame where it fucking belongs, on Trump and the USA government.
