Meanwhile a United Nations Security Council vote on a resolution that would authorise member states to use "all defensive measures" to secure the Strait of Hormuz appears to be postponed.

Postponing an important defensive strategy is strange

Third time Kuwait oil refinery hit since war started

Reporting from Dubai

After it was attacked by multiple drones in the early hours of Friday morning, fires broke out in parts of a key oil refinery in Kuwait.

No injuries have been reported.

The Mina al-Ahmadi port refinery, which is one of the largest in the Middle East, can refine up to 346,000 barrels of oil a day.

Kuwait has three major oil refineries. Its Mina al-Ahmadi refinery has been targeted by Iranian drones twice before during the five week-long conflict.

The Kuwait Petroleum Corporation says emergency and firefighting teams have been working to contain the fires in some of the refinery’s 39 operating units and prevent them from spreading.

It adds that air quality in the affected area is being monitored, and that so far there has been no impact on the local environment.

I’m surprised they can’t use all defensive measures without that resolution.

I agree, surely that cannot be correct.

Iran are attacking countries not involved. Seens little condemnation of Iran for doing this.

Maybe it’s kind of irrelevant in that way. Each country will use defensive measures with or without the motion.

Ihatetomatoes · 03/04/2026 10:15

They should use everything to protect themselves. They are very restrained considering they are being attacked daily.

It has only been postponed until tomorrow.

From what I've read it is felt that the extra day for negotiations etc could make it more likely that none of the 15 member countries will veto it.

Al Jazeera are also reporting on this attack:

Kuwait says a power and desalination plant has been hit by an Iranian attack, as Gulf countries continue to face heavy retaliatory strikes on the 35th day of the United States and Israel’s war on Iran.

Al Jazeera’s Malik Traina, reporting from the capital, Kuwait City, said this was the third time the refinery was hit and that people across the country are on “high alert”.

“It’s one of the biggest refineries in the Middle East, and it is also critical for local consumption,” he said.

Kuwait “is the closest country to Iran – just 80 kilometres separates Kuwait from Iran’s coastlines, so it’s perhaps the most easily targeted from these attacks from Iran,” he added.

& now the Iranians claim to have shot down a US F35 fighter.

So much for Trumps claims that the Iranians have been destroyed, militarily.

Lets hope, shd the pilot have survived, he is rescued before being paraded for the world to see.

or better still, it hasn't happened.

US Counter

While there is no immediate comment from the US on the latest Iranian claim, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) dismissed two earlier reports. Responding to the Iranian video claiming the Qeshm Island crash, CENTCOM's official X account wrote, 'All US fighter aircraft are accounted for. Iran's IRGC has made the same false claim at least half a dozen times."

GROK: The photos show scattered aircraft debris in a rocky, arid area—likely tail/wing sections with red-white-green paint, yellow stripes, and "EUROPE" stenciled on one piece. These don't match F-35 characteristics (stealth coatings, composites, US markings). No credible independent confirmation of IRGC downing a second F-35 today; recent March 19 claims were about damage (not a crash) with safe US landing. This appears to be unverified propaganda imagery.

Looks like Iran is increasing strikes against countries not involved in the war

Aren't Bahrain and Kuwait countries with key US military infrastructure?

I haven't seen any photos released by Iran yet. Link please.

As I said, this was from GROK.

What AI Said About Latest Photos

The latest photos that are being widely shared on Iranian channels show scattered aircraft debris in a rocky, arid area—likely tail/wing sections with red-white-green paint, yellow stripes, and 'EUROPE' stencilled on one piece.

When asked about the validity of the images, X's AI chatbot said the images don't match F-35 characteristics (stealth coatings, composites, and US markings). "No credible independent confirmation of the IRGC downing a second F-35 today; recent March 19 claims were about damage (not a crash) with a safe US landing. This appears to be unverified propaganda imagery," the chatbot said.

The chatbot also pointed out that images show no USAF stars, tail codes, or F-35 stealth contours on the wreckage, and they don't match a Lakenheath-based US jet. "Looks like repurposed old debris photos," it said.

Did Grok include the disclaimer that as sharing unofficial images and videos of attacks/damages is illegal any photos online might have a questionable provenance?

That will be how Iran attempt to justify it.

But Bahrain and Kuwait are not at war with Iran.

And a water desalination plant is not a legitimate military target.

There is no justification for Iran targeting a water desalination plant, especially in a country they are not even at war with. Is there?

I'm sure that Iran's justification is not a hundred miles different from Trump's.

EasternStandard · 03/04/2026 11:50

Kuwait etc haven’t done anything wrong. They’ve not reacted so far but some have said they’re not always going to just try to defend.

Twiglets1 · 03/04/2026 11:50

Lots of sources we discuss on MN have a questionable provenance - up to individual posters whether they think AI analysis of the photos has something to add to this discussion or not.

Why has Trump been attacking water desalination plants in countries he isn't at war with too?
