Conflict in the Middle East

Should the international community sanction Israel over settler violence in West Bank?

FloralDeerPattern · 19/03/2026 20:03

The problem of Israeli terrorism is getting worse and worse. Just over the past few weeks amongst other things Israeli terrorists have killed multiple people, commited sexual assault, beaten and threatened to rape young Palestinian girls, continually attacked the residents and property of the only remaining fully Christian town in the West Bank, stolen 100s of sheep from the Bedouin community, beaten activists who are there to provide a protective presence to Palestinians, set fire to property.

Palestinians don't have the right to defend themselves from this violent, rapidly escalating Israeli terrorism. They can't arrest and detain the Israeli terrorists. They are sitting ducks with no means of protecting themselves from beatings and sexual violence. Is it time that the international community steps in and sanctions Israel until they can control their obvious terrorism problem? What else can be done to try and protect innocent people from this escalating Israeli violence?

It's not an 'antisemetic lie' though is it.

It's a reported and known fact. Lower ranking IDF personnel repeatedly warned there was activity at the border and it was ignored by higher IDF operatives.

It's not a "known fact" that Israel allowed the 7/10/23 attack to happen "for their own reasons".

What is true is that Israel acknowledged security failings prior to 7/10/23 and an internal report concluded that the Israel Defense Forces "failed in its mission to protect Israeli civilians".

Lt Gen Herzi Halevi took responsibility and resigned over it and lessons will have been learnt so that Israel will put an even greater emphasis on eliminating any risk than was previously the case.

Exactly, it's not the sort of allegation to throw around whatever you think of Israel's actions post 7/10/23. And it is not the first time I have heard it reported on this board as if it was a deliberate choice of Israel to allow the attack to happen.

The source provided by @Newbutoldfather (dated February 25) provides more details on Israel's own report into what went wrong security wise. They acknowledge their failures, but that's very different to allowing it to happen "for their own reasons".

Israel's military has published its first official account of the mistakes that led to its failures during Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack, which triggered the Gaza war.

The report concludes that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) "failed in its mission to protect Israeli civilians".

After presenting the findings to commanders on Monday, the IDF's outgoing chief of staff, Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, said he took full responsibility for the failures.

"I embrace my responsibility. It is mine. I was the commander of the army on 7 October and I have my responsibility and I have all of your responsibility. I see that as mine too. And I see that in every command of mine that went wrong, there is also a part of me," he said in a video.

Last month, the general announced his resignation over the failures and called for a commission of inquiry to carry out a broader investigation that would help prevent another attack.

In the same way that the links I posted prove nothing, this proves nothing either. As I said, at this moment, it is all pure conjecture. Whatever the truth is, someone senior in Israel had to take responsibility for Oct 7th and fall on their sword. In fact I think it is ridiculous that only one person should be held responsible. For an intelligence failure of this level, many heads should be rolling. The Covid Partygate scandal drew more media attention than this.

"There are, of course, reports that the Israelis knew about 7th October in advance and chose not to act to prevent it. "

Some stoop so low with unsubstantiated claims. Where does your hatred come from that you believe so easily that lie? That Israel who invest millions in defence would happily allow October 7th go ahead. Making mistakes is one thing and is not evidence of allowing a mass terrorist attack to go ahead. These threads have some very hateful and frankly disgusting unsubstantiated claims. The claim repeated by a poster is why most Jewish people left this area of mn, pure hatred. It's very low.

Or is it to be expected on CITME board 🤔 has this what this section has become.

It is what this section has become but sadly I think your post may well get deleted. It's probably a bit too frank but it's certainly true, and maybe MN should reflect on why, that most Jewish people have left this area of the site.

It's upsetting to post on here even as a non Jewish person with open contempt for one religious/cultural group being displayed day after day.

I think the settlers are awful and shoukd be stopped. Unlike you I don't think the violence on either side or the celebration of it is "understandable".

My post is frank and honest.

The hatred spewed out is not acceptable. I will join others and withdraw my oxygen from these threads. No point responding anymore. It changes nothing. The threads get smaller and smaller with less and less posters.

Yes I take your point that you see it as pure conjecture. I don't but that's a difference of opinion.

I'm pleased that you confirmed that you would never accuse Israel of anything as heinous as that without hard evidence. That's what I said "exactly" to though probably I didn't make myself clear enough.

"It's upsetting to post on here even as a non Jewish person with open contempt for one religious/cultural group being displayed day after day." That is not only untrue but totally unfair. I have not seen anyone attacking Jews on here and if I did, I for one would jump to their defense. There are many Israelis, not just Jews, who are highly critical of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians. They are heroes in my opinion as they are the ones who are truly attacked being called vile things like self loathing or even traitors.

I don't recognise your username but I have been on this board for a long time across many, many threads. I have seen many unfounded accusations against Jewish people on here - those both in Israel and in the UK unfortunately.

If you haven't seen any then either you haven't looked very widely or it's because I report antisemitic posts where I see them and they normally get quickly deleted.

Of course there are many Israelis, not just Jews, who are highly critical of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians. That is not in dispute.

Legitimate criticism of Israel is fine, of course. What is not fine is baseless accusations intended to present Israel in the worst possible light. An example of which we saw on this thread - an accusation with no evidence that they knew an attack was imminent before it happened. Evidence is needed for that sort of accusation that Israel wanted the attack to happen "for their own reasons" but is never provided.

It seems that the only reason the siege is getting as much airtime as it is is because one of the homes is owned by a US citizen who is in Ohio.

Yesterday an Israeli gunman opened fire on activists including a Catholic bishop who were trying to help, they could see an IDF jeep there and they just sat and watched. The activists were forced to leave in fear of their lives and then to celebrate settlers visited a nearby Palestinian home and threatened to burn it down.

The whole thing is seriously fucked up.

Yes, this kind of situation is happening daily in WB with the IDF facilitating the actions of the settlers. This is a top down occupation strategy and that’s why sanctioning a few individuals is such a feeble response.

It is encouraging to see a lot more mainstream media reports on settler terrorist activities. People are rightly getting more and more angry at their governments complete inaction in this. There is zero excuses for it and if it was any other country complicit and actively facilitating this there would be uproar. Let's remember who the victims are here.

You don't need to provide a source from The Telegraph or BBC - any reputable source will do. As you well know, I also quote myself from the Guardian and Independent in addition to many other sources. They are biased (as are the Telegraph and BBC) but are still reputable compared to one man you allegedly spoke to or something you saw on TikTok or similar.

Repeatedly accusing me of "black and white thinking" or another poster of "not understanding" is really just intended to shut us up.

If you're going to repeat a highly controversial and inflammatory claim twice, then at least provide some evidence to back it up.

If you decide to call other people 'anti semitic', making a personal attack without any basis, and use the term 'anti semitic' without understanding the meaning, you should expect some push back.

"Legitimate criticism of Israel is fine, of course." I hear that a lot but who decides what is legitimate and what isn't. I absolutely criticise Zionism in its current form and the actions of Israel towards the Palestinians and I absolutely refuse to conflate Judaism and Zionism. Not all Jews are Zionists and not all Zionists are Jews.

This whole discussion started by people pointing out that Israel had multiple sources of evidence that an attack was imminent and failed to act on that evidence. I don't remember anyone directly accusing Israel of letting it happen although I will concede the implication was there.

Newbutoldfather · 15/08/2026 07:30

@rainingsnoring ,

I do think that the idea the Israelis knew about 7/10 in advance is pretty odious.

Israel lost over 1,000 young people, which is a lot in a tiny country; the vast majority being civilians.

It is an unpleasant conspiracy theory as there is no evidence for it and it makes even less sense. Which Israelis knew about it? How did they keep it a secret from anyone else?

It is as offensive as believing that the Americans knew about 9/11 in advance.

You may find it odious but it does not mean that it has not been mentioned repeatedly by various sources, nor does it mean that it is certainly untrue. The truth is that none of us know for sure.

The fact that 7/10 was an appalling, vicious attack is a separate point which I'm sure everyone agrees with.

There are, of course, Americans who believe that the CIA/powers that be in the US knew about 9/11 in advance too. They say so publicly. I don't find it offensive to consider either of these theories. There are most certainly lots of things going on behind the surface that the public are not made aware of.

It is Israeli government policy. It would be very easy for the IDF to remove the settlers causing the siege.

I think this Israeli government have come to realise that no matter what they do, there will be no government level repercussions. Yes, their global reputation is in tatters but they don't seem to care. I can only assume that once they have achieved their goal of ethnically cleansing the country of Palestinians, they will then start some media campaign to build up their image. I hope the world doesn't forget but unfortunately people can be fickle. Look how little coverage of Gaza there is. People are already forgetting.
