Conflict in the Middle East

Should the international community sanction Israel over settler violence in West Bank?

The problem of Israeli terrorism is getting worse and worse. Just over the past few weeks amongst other things Israeli terrorists have killed multiple people, commited sexual assault, beaten and threatened to rape young Palestinian girls, continually attacked the residents and property of the only remaining fully Christian town in the West Bank, stolen 100s of sheep from the Bedouin community, beaten activists who are there to provide a protective presence to Palestinians, set fire to property.

Palestinians don't have the right to defend themselves from this violent, rapidly escalating Israeli terrorism. They can't arrest and detain the Israeli terrorists. They are sitting ducks with no means of protecting themselves from beatings and sexual violence. Is it time that the international community steps in and sanctions Israel until they can control their obvious terrorism problem? What else can be done to try and protect innocent people from this escalating Israeli violence?

Of course the international community should have sanctioned Israel long ago. They won't though because the US will not and they want 'an ally' (if you can call it that) in the region.
As you say, a large part of each population supports violence against the other side. The Palestinian feeling is at least understandable given that they have been living in occupied territory, subject to violence and treated as second class citizens for decades. A response to this is to be expected. The Israeli situation is different. There are, of course, reports that the Israelis knew about 7th October in advance and chose not to act to prevent it. Netanyahu has been trying to drag the US into a war on Iran for decades.
I can't see the feeling of the Israeli citizens changing rapidly, particularly as whatever happens in the upcoming elections, they will have similar policies.

It's not okay to support the settlers but supporting October 7th is "understandable". Talk about double standards.

Nope, understand perfectly. You're holding Israelis to a different standard than Palestinians, excusing hate and the celebration of violence on one side and not the other.

You repeated the antisemitic lie that “the Israelis actually knew about the coming attack and allowed it to happen for their own reasons”.

Which Israelis would do that? Don’t you know how much the Israel government spends on defence each year or how highly they value their citizens?

Which sources are you using to make that wild claim? It’s misinformation to keep repeating it on MN without offering a shred of evidence.

Why don't I research it myself? No why don't you provide a reputable source for the outlandish things you are suggesting. A reputable source isn't one person's opinions by the way (real or imaginary) or something you read on social media. It is something that provides some evidence in the way of actual facts.

Twiglets1 · 15/08/2026 06:34

In addition @rainingsnoring you have mentioned it twice just this morning.

You don't need to provide a source from The Telegraph or BBC - any reputable source will do. As you well know, I also quote myself from the Guardian and Independent in addition to many other sources. They are biased (as are the Telegraph and BBC) but are still reputable compared to one man you allegedly spoke to or something you saw on TikTok or similar.

Repeatedly accusing me of "black and white thinking" or another poster of "not understanding" is really just intended to shut us up.

If you're going to repeat a highly controversial and inflammatory claim twice, then at least provide some evidence to back it up.

Newbutoldfather · 15/08/2026 07:30

@rainingsnoring ,

I do think that the idea the Israelis knew about 7/10 in advance is pretty odious.

Israel lost over 1,000 young people, which is a lot in a tiny country; the vast majority being civilians.

It is an unpleasant conspiracy theory as there is no evidence for it and it makes even less sense. Which Israelis knew about it? How did they keep it a secret from anyone else?

It is as offensive as believing that the Americans knew about 9/11 in advance.

It's not an 'antisemetic lie' though is it.

It's a reported and known fact. Lower ranking IDF personnel repeatedly warned there was activity at the border and it was ignored by higher IDF operatives.

They were Israel's eyes on the border, but their warnings about Hamas went unheard

“If I had been valued a little more — not much, just a little — maybe it could have ended differently,” Roni Lifshitz, one of the former observers, told NBC News last month.

Nope, the above two posts don’t disprove it was a lie, in fact they reinforce it.

Ths conspiracy theory is that senior Israelis knew it would happen and allowed it as an excuse to invade Gaza.

The above articles suggest low level people warned their seniors that it might happen but senior people didn’t believe it was a serious plan or that Hamas was capable of carrying it out. It suggests Israeli incompetence.

There is a massive difference between a mistake and deliberately sacrificing 1,000 of your own citizens. Including young unarmed partygoers.

When you look at all the evidence they had that was one hell of a mistake. In most countries, if the senior intelligence officers messed up that bad, they wouldn't just find themselves out of a job, they'd probably be in jail.

Exactly. There is one report repeated several times by different media sources. It is damning if true as points to a failure by the senior Israeli military to perceive Hamas plans as a serious enough threat. A top military commander resigned over the security breaches on 7/10/23.

It was a mistake, yes. What it wasn’t was evidence that the Israelis allowed the massacre & kidnappings to happen for their own reasons. Israel does not sacrifice their own civilians, they spend billions on defending them.

Newbutoldfather · 15/08/2026 08:59

@Squeezingwildoranges ,

It looks like the head of the IDF did resign over it.

And, yes, it was a hell of an intelligence failure by both Mossad and the IDF.

I think Israel reinforces its reputation of being impregnable, both militarily and in terms of intelligence. It generally serves them well, but not in this instance.

(I also read that more Iranian missiles were getting through the iron dome than Israel was publicly acknowledging.)

The report says the military "failed in its mission to protect Israeli civilians" during Hamas's attack.

This is a pointless discussion as at this moment, everything is pure conjecture. I am no fan of Israel, particularly concerning their treatment of the Palestinians, but I would never accuse them of anything as heinous as that without hard evidence.

In every way possible they are making life unbearable for Palestinians. Like what happened in Gaza.

https://www.thejournal.ie/activists-try-to-deliver-supplies-to-palestinians-besieged-by-israeli-settlers-in-the-west-bank-7131179-Aug2026/

Really feel for those families in Qusra.

It seems that the only reason the siege is getting as much airtime as it is is because one of the homes is owned by a US citizen who is in Ohio.

Yesterday an Israeli gunman opened fire on activists including a Catholic bishop who were trying to help, they could see an IDF jeep there and they just sat and watched. The activists were forced to leave in fear of their lives and then to celebrate settlers visited a nearby Palestinian home and threatened to burn it down.

The whole thing is seriously fucked up.

BG and S are not Israel. They are the racist supremacist wing of Jewish ethnicity. In the same way I would not throw every Palestinian under the bus along with Hamas, I would urge others to do the same with Israelis.
There are many Israelis who wholeheartedly condemn the violence in the WB.
Lets hope one of those comes into power later on this year, and a corner can be turned.

Absolutely clear BG and S are not Israel, when "Israel" is used to mean the land and the people that live in it, and I would also condemn anyone that tried to conflate the two.

But they are part of the Israeli government, and people will use the word "Israel" to also mean the state actor controlling an army, a police force etc. Its the Israeli state who are deliberately creating an environment to encourage and actively support criminal settlers and this makes it a criminal regime.

I do not blame Israeli people in general for this and recognise like in any country in the world that ordinary people are not responsible for the actions of their government.

Unlike many posters on here who feel fine about justifying any level of violence against Palestinians because they have previously voted for/supported Hamas and therefore have collective responsibility for all actions of Hamas. Which is actually also exactly the reasoning Osama Bin Laden used for justifying attacks on American citizens - you voted for George Bush so you are collectively guilty for any crimes commited by the US government or army.

Exactly, it's not the sort of allegation to throw around whatever you think of Israel's actions post 7/10/23. And it is not the first time I have heard it reported on this board as if it was a deliberate choice of Israel to allow the attack to happen.

The source provided by @Newbutoldfather (dated February 25) provides more details on Israel's own report into what went wrong security wise. They acknowledge their failures, but that's very different to allowing it to happen "for their own reasons".

Israel's military has published its first official account of the mistakes that led to its failures during Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack, which triggered the Gaza war.

The report concludes that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) "failed in its mission to protect Israeli civilians".

After presenting the findings to commanders on Monday, the IDF's outgoing chief of staff, Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, said he took full responsibility for the failures.

"I embrace my responsibility. It is mine. I was the commander of the army on 7 October and I have my responsibility and I have all of your responsibility. I see that as mine too. And I see that in every command of mine that went wrong, there is also a part of me," he said in a video.

Last month, the general announced his resignation over the failures and called for a commission of inquiry to carry out a broader investigation that would help prevent another attack.

Fucked up is right.

The IDF won't help the residents in Taybeh, the last Christian village who are living in fear from the constant attacks.

"There are, of course, reports that the Israelis knew about 7th October in advance and chose not to act to prevent it. "

Some stoop so low with unsubstantiated claims. Where does your hatred come from that you believe so easily that lie? That Israel who invest millions in defence would happily allow October 7th go ahead. Making mistakes is one thing and is not evidence of allowing a mass terrorist attack to go ahead. These threads have some very hateful and frankly disgusting unsubstantiated claims. The claim repeated by a poster is why most Jewish people left this area of mn, pure hatred. It's very low.

Or is it to be expected on CITME board 🤔 has this what this section has become.

CowboyBuilders · 15/08/2026 09:43

"The report concludes that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) "failed in its mission to protect Israeli civilians"."

Failure to protect is completely different from allowing to go ahead.

People failed to protect many in terrorist attacks around the world but allowing to go ahead is completely different.

I will join others and leave this low area of MN its not worth engaging. Engaging keeps it going.
