Conflict in the Middle East

Should the international community sanction Israel over settler violence in West Bank?

The problem of Israeli terrorism is getting worse and worse. Just over the past few weeks amongst other things Israeli terrorists have killed multiple people, commited sexual assault, beaten and threatened to rape young Palestinian girls, continually attacked the residents and property of the only remaining fully Christian town in the West Bank, stolen 100s of sheep from the Bedouin community, beaten activists who are there to provide a protective presence to Palestinians, set fire to property.

Palestinians don't have the right to defend themselves from this violent, rapidly escalating Israeli terrorism. They can't arrest and detain the Israeli terrorists. They are sitting ducks with no means of protecting themselves from beatings and sexual violence. Is it time that the international community steps in and sanctions Israel until they can control their obvious terrorism problem? What else can be done to try and protect innocent people from this escalating Israeli violence?

Protests often start small and then gather momentum.

Last August there were anti war protests in Israel with hundreds of thousands of protesters taking part.

Just a few hundred protestors then, out of 10 million civilians.

What percentage of the entire population of a country have to attend a single protest for it to count in your mind?

Although there has been an acceleration of land theft in the West Bank recently, it is nothing new and has been going on for decades. I think if the protests were going to grow because the general Israeli population opposed them, they would have by now.

Newbutoldfather · 14/08/2026 14:03

Israel has some massive long term problems.

The original population was very well educated and mostly liberal. However they then had a demographic problem in that the Arab population was having a lot more children (5 or 6 to 0-2).

The settlers who are mostly younger and not very well educated also have 5-6 children each but, in solving one problem, they have created another, as they are real fundamentalists, no different from Hamas in many ways.

And you have Netanyahu who is happy to try and ‘win’ the war
in order to avoid internal scrutiny. And he is backed by Trump. It is a toxic combination.,

We have to hope that the Israelis and the U.S vote in very different types of government in the near future. If not, I think Israel will lose a lot of the global support it takes for granted. Already polls in the U.S show the majority losing faith in Israel.

Holocaust inversion.

Between 1941 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its allies murdered about six million Jews in a genocide, which has become known as the Holocaust. The Nazi attempt to implement their final solution to the Jewish question took place during World War II in Europe. The first use of the phrase "never again" in the context of the Holocaust was in April 1945, when newly liberated survivors at Buchenwald concentration camp displayed it in various languages on handmade signs.

Thank you for educating me on the origins of that phrase. I didn't know that's where it came from. I first heard it from Jewish people while we were on a march to protest the genocide in Gaza.

I know it has been happening for decades but the violence seems to have really ramped up recently. I hope & expect that the Israel government enabling this is something they get punished for in the October elections.

You used the phrase without even knowing what it referred to?

Everyone should be up in arms about genocide being committed in their own country.

Doing nothing is being part of the problem not part of the solution.

Newbutoldfather · 14/08/2026 15:08

It’s really tough now as both populations have become pretty radicalised.

Something like 70% of the Palestinian population supported 7/10 in all its horror Equally, I suspect a majority of Israelis now support expansion.

This situation really needs international involvement and pressure on Israel (as they have the power here).

So every single who is not protresting is somehow complicit? Do you apply that logic everytime any government in the world does something wrong?

Yes but it depends on what you mean by doing something wrong. Genocide is quite a biggy and is up there with doing something very wrong. Can't really think of anything worse.

Is there anything wrong with that? Discussions usually involve questions.

Israelis seize Palestinian irrigation supply so they can have a pool to play in taking away Palestinians ability to grow crops and support themselves. Israeli finance minister pledges funds to further develop the pool as an Israeli tourist attraction. This is part of a wider pattern designed to make Palestinians lives in the West Bank untenable. Israelis have attacked at least 160 water and sanitation sites across the Palestinian territory this year.

I try to. So do my kids and everyone we know. Not always possible but at least a single rotten unsold avocado is a slight sting.

Israel I imagine is the same as the UK and every other country.
The vast majority of people are moderate but pretty passive in terms of joining protests and mainly concerned with their own survival.

A minority are racists/ violent settlers/ Islamic terrorists etc

and on the other side - a minority are people who campaign for justice for others .

I saw the news report of this. And the man whose crops were dying because the water from the spring keeping a while village alive was diverted to make the pool "Herods Way"

Water has long been used as a weapon of war by Israel so it's clear the same tactics used in Gaza are also being used in the West Bank.

It really just comes from all angles doesn't it, the attempts to Palestinians lives there untenable. Then it's a shrug and well they decided to leave their homes so we might as well have it, a land without people and all that.

In every way possible they are making life unbearable for Palestinians. Like what happened in Gaza.

Of course the international community should have sanctioned Israel long ago. They won't though because the US will not and they want 'an ally' (if you can call it that) in the region.
As you say, a large part of each population supports violence against the other side. The Palestinian feeling is at least understandable given that they have been living in occupied territory, subject to violence and treated as second class citizens for decades. A response to this is to be expected. The Israeli situation is different. There are, of course, reports that the Israelis knew about 7th October in advance and chose not to act to prevent it. Netanyahu has been trying to drag the US into a war on Iran for decades.
I can't see the feeling of the Israeli citizens changing rapidly, particularly as whatever happens in the upcoming elections, they will have similar policies.
