Israel attacked Iran early on Saturday morning, saying it had “launched a pre-emptive strike against Iran to remove threats to the state of Israel,” according to a military spokesman.

Israel closed its airspace and declared a state of emergency, in anticipation of
Iranian drone and missile strikes in response.

Explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday, Iranian media reported.

Yes, I think the BBC hadn't verified that.

Sorry, I should have said that the BBC has reported the story very carefully as unverified.

Yes, I think the BBC hadn't verified that.

Not sure how true or accurate that is, but I saw a post on X last week, allegedly showing a screenshot of a text message doing its rounds in Iran, urging people not to send their children to school in the coming days.

@smokingdogs I hope you are able to keep safe.
Your family too, @HappyFace2025 .
🙏

Thank you so much.

Interesting.

Yes, that's what I saw too.

Thank you so much.

Thank you so much 🙏. Hopefully it will all be fine, but there have been missiles all afternoon. We’ve been told to stay in our houses.

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 28/02/2026 13:54

I believe that’s an unverified Iranian news agency report. The BBC has covered it too, along with the Iranian claim that Israel “targeted” the school with 3 missiles. Which sounds highly unlikely. I wouldn’t trust anything that the Iranian state says.

Yes I was waiting for the propaganda to start up.

smokingdogs · 28/02/2026 14:01

Sorry @OrangeAxolotyl, that thanks was aimed at you!

Sorry @OrangeAxolotyl, that thanks was aimed at you!

No worries!
Let's hope that this gets rid of the regime, and limits the support for Hamas, Hezbollah, etc and that more people are safe.

Predictable.

I suspect it's a lovely time ATM for people living in Iran and Israel currently.
I really don't have too much sympathy for your daughter in Australia while my cousins in Israel have to stay in their safe rooms (something that Iranians don't have).

I didn't expect you to have sympathy...., I was just making a post, yunno like other people who were stating they were flying to Middle East and now can't 🙄. Nor was I asking for it sympathy, but thanks for your comment.

You are unable to read the room. Some of us have family directly involved in this war. It is a harsh reality for us.

smokingdogs · 28/02/2026 13:52

I can’t have much sympathy for this whilst my house is actually shaking from missile attacks. Of course anyone caught up in these countries is scared, VIP or not. Isn’t this the kind of thing a travel company is supposed to support you in, if an emergency occurs?

Yes, but it was just a post, and fuxake, wasn't looking for sympathy....🙄and am sorry that you are in middle of this, genuinely. Hope you are safe.
However , the Iran situation has been going on for 47 years. I am old enough to remember the hostage situation in the US embassy. I don't have the answers but if anyone thinks these air strikes are going to solve a situation that has been going in for almost half a century and solve the problem for the people of Iran, its naive . Yes , I know YOU didn't actually say that.
The intervention and war in Afghanistan went so well for the citizens.🫤

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 28/02/2026 14:19

Apparently there is a growing belief in Iran that the Supreme Leader was killed or seriously hurt earlier today and this is leading to a belief in Iran that they can now dispose their hated rulers

Again , its just a post, and yes I'm sorry for people directly affected, but jeez it was a comment. I shall bow out to the Postit Police. 🙄

Indeed. I always find it bizarre when people with the privilege of living in a liberal democracy would defend a homophobic, antisemitic, misogynist fascist regime

I agree. It’s the same with Venezuela. Maduro is a wicked man and now he’s been captured, hopefully things will improve for Venezuelans.
But no, protestors living in democracies march around with placards denouncing the capture of the dear little kitten Maduro.

TheFilliesWillRiseAgain · 28/02/2026 14:24

The Iranian Foreign Minister has just issued a quite extraordinary statement: "To the best of my knowledge, the Supreme Leader is alive. We have lost a one or two commanders but that's fine."

Where is this information coming from?

Please let it be true.

Whatever Trump decides to do, certain people will march for the opposite it seems.

dapsnotplimsolls · 28/02/2026 14:32

I think Iranians will only believe he's still alive if they see him. How I'd love a Ceaucescu moment when he appeared, started a speech and looked perplexed when the boos started.

A few weeks ago I saw Iranians on twitter sharing messages that the regime line would be that Israel is attacking schools and children, there were videos of basjis moving equipment into schools etc. not sure how reliable that is, but it’s very hamasy so….

As to those in the west who are objecting to this, most of them are disgusting little tankies who subscribe to a third worldist ideology. They literally don’t care about the consequences for anyone living under any of these dictatorships, they can just pretend that the regimes are “anti-imperialist”. The idea of thinking that Iran and Russia are anti-imperialist is utterly laughable. These people are either misinformed, stupid or literally immoral.

Hoping for freedom and safety for the Iranian people and good on the Israelis for being happy to take the hit to get this shit done.

OrangeAxolotyl · 28/02/2026 14:39

Never underestimate the ignorance though, @Bringemout . I argued on here with someone who maintained that the Israelis were as Islamophobic as Iran, that Israel is a dictatorship, and that they ruled Gaza since 1948.
Oh, and one who didn't believe that there are Israeli Arabs.
