App to boycott Israeli goods

the “No Thanks” app, which first appeared almost two years ago carrying a large list of companies and brands consumers might consider boycotting because of Israeli links.
The app has become a key tool for the BDS movement that targets Israel economically for the actions of its government and its military in Gaza.
Along with a list of companies and brands to boycott, the app allows users to scan barcodes to find out more about the relationship particular products have with Israel.

Absolutely! We always have the choice to be on the right or wrong side of history. There were many ppl who supported Nazis too. Each to their own.

True, some out of ignorance, some out of fear. Sadly some of them just because they hated Jewish people, among others of course, but mainly they hated Jewish people.

You said nazis were doing to muslims what nazis did to Jews, I asked who ( are the nazis) and what (are they doing that is the same as the nazis)? Are you referring to 'the' nazis, as in the German National Socialist Party and their adherents.

SirHumphreyRocks · 15/09/2025 17:04

Or is it only Jews we hold to account?

I recall boycotting companies with links to South Africa in the 70's and 80's, so the idea of exerting political pressure for change through boycotting companies is hardly new.

But I don't think anyone suggested holding Jews to account, did they? The actions against Gaza are being conducted by the Israeli government, are they not? Not by Jews. That would be like holding Christians to account for the actions of the UK government on account of a load of them going to Church. Ones faith, and ones humanity, are measured by how one lives your beliefs, whatever label they may have.

Agree. I don’t know why this has become a Jewish thing. The app is about Israeli companies and products.

Yes obviously
or I wouldn’t have wasted my time pointing it out.

Really ?!

Yes really. My Jewish friends (including several living in Tel Aviv) do not support the actions of the Israeli government. It seems you are trying to suggest that all Jewish people (or all Israeli people, since not all Israeli's are Jewish?) support what is happening in Gaza. And that then makes anyone opposed to the Israeli governments actions anti-semitic? That would not be true though. We are quite capable of recognising that an entire people cannot be held accountable for the actions of their government. Whoever their government may be.

Anyway it’s easy to explain to someone who doesn’t know than to the person who knows everything and pretend not to see.

I have never in my life suggested that all Jewish people think or do anything.

Why don’t you start apps for the other causes you have mentioned if you’re so concerned about them? In the meantime, this app is for this cause.

PP has a point though.

Would you feel a little uneasy using an app that warned you where Pakistani sex offenders near you lived? Or subscribing to a newsletter dedicated to exposing wrongdoing by women MPs. The focus on those specific groups would, at least, make you wonder about the motives of the makers.

MixedBananas · 15/09/2025 18:08

Omg thank you. I have a physical paper woth the list of hindreds of brands. This would be helpful. Is it any goods for prosuce in superpmarkets?
I have boycotted since my uni days over 15years ago now. I am very very vocal with feiends and family and always reminding those i come in contact with.

Your questions have absolutely no relevance to this topic though so a comparison cannot be made. BDS movements have historically worked in civil rights cases and worked very well, and that’s why it is being employed in this particular case.

Whataboutery does not help anybody-let’s all remember how frustrating and demoralising it is when the “what about the men” brigade turn up in conversations about feminism shall we?

MixedBananas · 15/09/2025 18:11

As an Arab I am also a Semite. But interestingly any hate towards me is not antisemetic. Even after the murder of hundreds of thousands of Arabs over the last decade due to the illegal "war" and millions before in the middle east. Never forget is what people chant about the right kinda "semite". Us Arabs are not the right kind.

It works well, and you can search for specific brands and it gives a little breakdown of why they are on the list. Well worth trying. I’ve changed supermarkets, toiletries, food brands, confectionery and cleaning products as a result.

You must have understood the relevance of the question, or you wouldn’t be so keen to deflect it.

This is not about whether you oppose sex offending or political wrongdoing. I’m assuming you do.

‘What about the men’ is a legitimate and powerful question to ask if the person it’s said to has just been decrying the fecklessness of single mothers or the promiscuity of women these days or the mediocrity of our female politicians.

Because it challenges a double standard that often springs from conscious or unconscious prejudice.

None of us should be afraid of reflecting on whether that’s going on here too.
