App to boycott Israeli goods

the “No Thanks” app, which first appeared almost two years ago carrying a large list of companies and brands consumers might consider boycotting because of Israeli links.
The app has become a key tool for the BDS movement that targets Israel economically for the actions of its government and its military in Gaza.
Along with a list of companies and brands to boycott, the app allows users to scan barcodes to find out more about the relationship particular products have with Israel.

You must have understood the relevance of the question, or you wouldn’t be so keen to deflect it.

This is not about whether you oppose sex offending or political wrongdoing. I’m assuming you do.

‘What about the men’ is a legitimate and powerful question to ask if the person it’s said to has just been decrying the fecklessness of single mothers or the promiscuity of women these days or the mediocrity of our female politicians.

Because it challenges a double standard that often springs from conscious or unconscious prejudice.

None of us should be afraid of reflecting on whether that’s going on here too.

You have completely misunderstood me I’m afraid.

In any case, I think this app is very useful and I hope more and more people continue to boycott as many products and services linked to the Israeli government or produced on stolen Palestinian land as they can.

You're calling @mnhq literal Nazis now? 😅I mean that is a bit much.

You accused the people who deleted your post of being Nazis.

Do you think the state of Israel should not exist at all, or are you in favour of a moderately governed 2-state solution?

Is there one for brands with Chinese links, after their genocide of Uyghur Muslims?

How about one for brands with ties to Iran after their funding of Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis?

Or one for brands with ties to the UAE after they happily transfer weapons to Sudan after the recent genocide there?

Or one for brands with ties to Russia?

Or is it only Jews we hold to account?

We should hold our allies to account regardless of what religion they follow.

We also bear more responsibility for the current atrocities being committed by Isreal than we do other global acts of inhumanity.

As an Arab I am also a Semite. But interestingly any hate towards me is not antisemetic. Even after the murder of hundreds of thousands of Arabs over the last decade due to the illegal "war" and millions before in the middle east. Never forget is what people chant about the right kinda "semite". Us Arabs are not the right kind.

This is a misunderstanding of the word. 'Antisemitism' was coined in the 19th century in relation to a concept of 'semites' that at the time referred only to Jews. Its not about saying arabs dont count.

This is from the IHRA website

The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) would like to address the spelling of the term “antisemitism,” often rendered as “anti-Semitism.” The IHRA’s concern is that the hyphenated spelling allows for the possibility of something called “Semitism,” which not only legitimizes a form of pseudo-scientific racial classification that was thoroughly discredited by association with Nazi ideology, but also divides the term, stripping it from its meaning of opposition and hatred toward Jews.
The philological term ‘Semitic’ referred to a family of languages originating in the Middle East whose descendant languages today are spoken by millions of people mostly across Western Asia and North Africa. Following this semantic logic, the conjunction of the prefix “anti” with “Semitism” indicates antisemitism as referring to all people who speak Semitic languages or to all those classified as “Semites.” The term has, however, since its inception referred to prejudice against Jews alone.
In the mid-nineteenth century, the derived construct “Semite” provided a category to classify humans based on racialist pseudo-science. At the same time the neologism “antisemitism,” coined by German journalist Wilhelm Marr in 1879 to designate anti-Jewish campaigns, was spread through use by anti-Jewish political movements and the general public. The modern term gained popularity in Germany and Europe incorporating traditional Christian anti-Judaism, political, social and economic anti-Jewish manifestations that arose during the Enlightenment in Europe, and a pseudo-scientific racial theory that culminated in Nazi ideology in the twentieth century. Although the historically new word only came into common usage in the nineteenth century, the term antisemitism is today used to describe and analyze past and present forms of opposition or hatred towards Jews. In German, French, Spanish and many other languages, the term was never hyphenated.
The unhyphenated spelling is favored by many scholars and institutions in order to dispel the idea that there is an entity “Semitism” which “anti-Semitism” opposes. Antisemitism should be read as a unified term so that the meaning of the generic term for modern Jew-hatred is clear. At a time of increased violence and rhetoric aimed towards Jews, it is urgent that there is clarity and no room for confusion or obfuscation when dealing with antisemitism.

Why do people keep asking this question? When China or the US or the UK or Germany or wherever else are critiqued for their human rights abuses and indiscriminate wars nobody asks if people think those nations have a right to exist. It’s such a stupid question that is designed to deflect and derail and to make people fearful of engaging in discussions in case they are labelled as antisemitic. We see through it.

I suspect because China, Uk, and Germany are generally not accused of being on 'stolen Palestinian land'. If you suggest Israel stole the land that raises questions of whether you think it is legitimate.

It's a simple question. But as we're talking about China, do you consider Tibet and Taiwan to be separate states and does the UN?

Alittlefeedbackwouldbenice · 15/09/2025 18:59

Thank you. I'll download it ❤️

It's no different than the boycott in South Africa previously. Not all white South Africans would have been in favour of their government or apartheid either.

But no-one was questioning whether the country should exist at all and seeking to wipe it off the map.

This. The obsessive hatred for Israel turns my stomach. No one gives a shit about any other conflict. No Jews = no news

I agree to the use of the app to boycott Israeli products
All other issues have been discussed ad infinitum on other threads. I’m not interested in rehashing those on this thread ( esp as I know we’ve discussed them ) because I’m not interested in derails.

I too have found this app very useful @KatSlayMoon and thanks for posting OP

It's not a derail if it speaks to the reason why people are so keen to damage Israel's economy.

Yes, of course, people have a choice. But why ALL the focus on Israel when there are equally appalling genocides happening all over the world? Why is it only Israel that is blamed and has people protesting and targeting Jews?

Because Israel claims to be a democratic state, and it is armed and supported by other democratic countries.

DrPrunesqualer · 15/09/2025 20:17

Happy to derail here as it offers additional info on boycotting

From tuc.org.uk

Why is it only democratic states that get targetted? Saudi Arabia is armed by other democratic countries. The UK sells vastly more arms to Saudi.

Um if you look at my posting history you’ll see I have a lot to say about how the UK in particular has conducted itself over the years. The words “pillaged” “raped” and “destroyed” have been used by me to talk about the UK’s actions against other countries and at no point has anyone (even those who vociferously disagree with me and call me names) have asked me if I think the UK has a right to exist. It’s a tactic that is only ever used for Israel specifically because it usually shuts down debate as people are scared of being called antisemitic.

And yes: the Israeli government has stolen and continues to steal Palestinian land. Pointing that out does not make me antisemitic.

This thread is about Israel and Palestine. Why do you not want to focus on the topic at hand? What is with the constant deflection and derailment? What are you scared of that you don’t want people to discuss this?

Why don't we just ignore the derail attempts. They are transparent and a distraction from this thread. Just won't answer them and focus on the boycott.
