Sky News report that Israel is expected to approve Benjamin Netanyahu's plan for a takeover of Gaza when the security cabinet meets later today.

According to the Times of Israel, the full cabinet is due to convene at 6pm local time, 4pm in the UK.

Israeli media are reporting that the plan could potentially span over five months, and it is likely to be aimed at destroying Hamas and pressuring it to free remaining hostages.

While some ministers have been critical of the plan, reports suggest Netanyahu is likely to secure a majority of support.

It’s a moot point but always a mistake to turn these discussions personal.

I am merely making the point that absolutely none of us would happily wave our children, husbands and fathers goodbye and tell them to help the IDF as much as they can. We all know what would happen to them. It would be an absolutely heartbreaking decision to make in order to save younger children. And many others would simply not go: Talking about dividing families up in this way is always wrong.

"GAZA UPDATE: The Saudi Al-Sharq channel reported that the mediators are holding intensive talks with Israel and Hams - in an attempt to reach an agreement before a full Israeli invasion of Gaza City. According to sources, the talks involve a package of proposals to end the war and a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip - in exchange for the release of all Israeli hostages, disarmament of all armed factions, the expulsion of some of the leaders of Hams' military wing abroad, and the establishment of a technocrat administration to control the Strip, with the assistance of a professional police mechanism."

We can hopefully all agree that this would be a really good outcome at this point in time.

Absolutely I would flee to prevent my children being used as human sacrifices for Hamas who deliberately brought this war upon them.

I’d tell my husband and brothers to give themselves up and help Israel in any way they could to get rid of the terrorists who brought destruction to my home.

Wouldn’t you?

No of course I wouldn’t. That sounds incredibly dangerous. You’d be sitting ducks.

If Egypt were to allow Palestinians fleeing from the slaughter across their borders, what is to say that Israel wouldn’t use it as a reason to bomb those fleeing? They bombed Lebanon didn’t they to target Palestinians there didn’t they? They also killed lots of people with their exploding phones. I think people are right to be wary.

You've very much misunderstood. The Lebanon bombings and pagers were against Hezbollah, a terrorist organisation that has ruined Lenanon, and just been banned there.

They weren't targeted because they were Palestinian. They were targeted because they were firing missiles at Israel.

People's blind hatred of Israel does start to make sense if this is the level of factual understanding.

Wasn’t it because they were bombing Israel in support of Palestine? The idea that people are blindly hating rather than responding to behaviour is ridiculous.

You mean attacking Israel in support of Hamas? Yes.
Of course Hamas blindly hate. October 7 was an embodiment.

Do you know much about Hezbollah? They've absolutely wrecked Lebanon. They're not good guys.

None of us doesn’t include me. Do you mean children over 19?

I absolutely would flee to save my younger children and my DH and older sons would absolutely surrender to the IDF. They’d trust them more from Hamas after experiencing what they’d done, if they weren’t allowed to leave as well.

It’s a travesty that Gazans haven’t had the choice.

As a PP said lots of families are separated due to war. Look at all the lone male refugees, apparently fleeing wars while leaving their families in war zones, who have arrived in Europe over the last 10 years.

In support of the atrocities of Oct 7th you mean?

Hezbollah starting firing rockets and artillery at Israel on Oct 8th, displacing almost 100,000 Israelis.

The fact you have an opinion without knowing that is pretty ridiculous!

Well fair enough. You’ve certainly laid your cards out. And no I’m assuming the Israeli government would continue to treat 16 year olds as adults.

Asylum seekers are usually leaving their families in refugee camps in neighbouring countries by the way with the intention of being reunited later. The young might flee directly but the men with wives and children tend not to. It’s a very different situation
.

Luckily You don’t get to choose who has what opinion. We were discussing why Palestinians might not go to Egypt. What’s your opinion?

We can hopefully all agree that this would be a really good outcome at this point in time.

This would satisfy Netanyahu’s demands I think.

Hopefully yes we can all agree that it would be a really good outcome at this point in time. Would have been even better if Hamas had agreed the same terms months & months ago but you can’t go back in time so yes, hoping for a permanent ceasefire 🙏🏻

These types of posts are truly the lowest of the low. I really wish I hadn’t looked at that and the corresponding comments.

People making comments and sharing images of overweight Palestinians. Then someone sharing an image of an overweight person in a concentration camp during the Holocaust in response. It’s rotten to the core.

Being on X feels like you are just scrapping the very bottom of the human condition now.

Only because they don’t show what pro-Palestinians want them to show.

I am personally shocked a very over fed individual is bragging about being able to sell tonnes of sugar in a war zone where we are told there is a famine and mass starvation while surrounded by other healthy looking people. The famine and starvation being perpetrated by the country that facilitated him getting the free sugar to sell!

I have no doubt you would have given an entirely different response to the video if it showed something that fitted your narrative.

Netanyahu Press Conference (as reported in The Telegraph today)

Goal is ‘not to occupy Gaza, but to free Gaza’, says Netanyahu
“The war could end tomorrow if Hamas lays down its weapons”, Mr Netanyahu said in this afternoon’s press conference.
The goal of the upcoming expansion of the offensive is “not to occupy Gaza but to free Gaza”.
The aim of his press conference to “puncture the lies” about the Gaza City takeover plan.
“Given Hamas’ refusal to lay down its arms, Israel has no choice but to finish the job and complete the defeat of Hamas.”

Mr Netanyahu has laid out Israel’s five principles for concluding the war.
They are:

  1. Hamas disarmed
  2. All hostages freed.
  3. Gaza demilitarised.
  4. Israeli overriding security control.
  5. Non-Israeli peaceful civil administration.

Israel wants ‘security zone’ on border and ‘civilian administration’

Netanyahu wants to set up a “security zone” on the Israel-Gaza border to “prevent future terrorist incursions”, he said.

Given that Hamas “only professes its goal to destroy the state of Israel”, a “civilian administration will be established in Gaza that will seek to live in peace with Israel”, he said.

“That is our plan for the day after Hamas.”

Netanyahu dismisses media images of starving children as ‘fake’

Mr Netanyahu has criticised media images of starvation in Gaza, denouncing them as “fake” and threatening to sue the New York Times for using them.

The Israeli prime minister examined the “three most celebrated images” of “starving children”, apparently debunking claims that they are starving Gazans from the ongoing war.

Mr Netanyahu says that the only people in Gaza being deliberately starved are the Israeli hostages held by Hamas, not ordinary Palestinians.

He brings up a New York Times front page featuring an image of a malnourished child and labels it “fake.”

The child in question, he says, had underlying health issues - namely cerebral palsy.

Netanyahu says that the child’s mother and brother are healthy and alleges the newspaper buried a correction. He says the government is pursuing a suit against the New York Times.

For context, the 18-month child, Mohammed Zakaria al-Mutawaq was diagnosed with severe malnutrition. He also had pre-existing health problems.

PM compares press coverage with anti-Semitism from Middle Ages

Netanyahu has compared the “global campaign of lies” by the media with historic anti-Semitism from the Middle Ages and the Holocaust.

He said: “Every massacre of the Jewish people has been preceded by massive vilification.

“We were said to be spreading vermin to Christian society, we were said to be poisoning the wells.

“As these lies were spread across the globe, they culminated in the worst massacre of all, the Holocaust.”

Netanyahu outlines three-step plan to distribute aid

The Israeli prime minister outlined a three-step plan to ensure aid reaches civilians:

Designating safe corridors for humanitarian aid distribution
Increasing the number of safe distribution points managed by the Gazan Humanitarian Foundation
More air drops by Israeli forces and other partners

“There were, last time I checked, hundreds of trucks of food.”

He showed an image of what tonnes of uncollected aid in Gaza, which Israel allowed in via the Kerem Shalom crossing.

Foreign journalists to be allowed into Gaza ‘if accompanied by IDF’

Mr Netanyahu says that foreign journalists will be allowed into Gaza, but they will only be able to do so if they are accompanied by IDF soldiers.

For some time, foreign journalists have been banned from entering the territory.

Mr Netanyahu said he is looking at “creative ways” to free the hostages.

There are thought to be 20 living hostages and 30 bodies still being held by Hamas and other rebel groups.

The war can end if Hamas frees the hostages and agrees to lay down its arms, he said. “A war of attrition won’t get them out.”

Netanyahu: Palestinians’ goal is to ‘destroy Jewish state’

Mr Netanyahu has rejected suggestions that “if [Gazan people] were given a Palestinian state, they would stop the efforts to destroy the Jewish state”.

He said: “The Palestinians were offered a state, and they turned it down. They are not about creating a state, their goal is to destroy a Jewish state.
“We are facing neo-Nazis,” he added.

The Israeli PM identified the “crux of the problem” of the conflict “not as the absence of a Palestinian state, but the persistent refusal of the Palestinians to recognise a Jewish state.”

He proposed reforms of the “whole education system” to teach Palestinians that “Israel is here to stay, not just as a geographical fact but one of historical equity.”
