Gary Lineker - he really had to go and a warning t against virtue signalling

mids2019 · 19/05/2025 05:21

Maybe Gary Lineker's departure acts as a warning for this not acquainted with history to go around randomly reposting pro Palestinian links though I suspect he is not the only one. In a way it is a sad demise to a career but an absolutely necessary one and a timely warning that a proportion of P Palestinian supporters are anti semites.

for to say I didn't like the Gaurdian 's take that the BBC were looking to sack Gary anyway and he just have them an excuse.

I've not spoken to a person IRL who doesn't support the Palestinian cause. There was a man ranting at great length at a librarian last week, when I was in the library. She did her best to distract him and then left the desk and hid in the office until he'd gone.

I haven’t spoken to anyone in real life who supports the Gazans. Most of them say they brought it on themselves, if the topic even comes up.

I suppose we all live in our bubbles - I'm glad I don't live in a bubble that believes Gazans brought on starvation and genocide on themselves, that's quite shocking but I really don't believe this attitude is widespread - I can't believe that - it's much too depressing.

mids2019 · 30/05/2025 06:39

So Israel sets up food stations to feed thousands of Palestinians that they are trying to starve? There GHF stations have been set up that aims to prevent Hamas essentially stealing the aid. Despite the strange calls that feeding Palestianians is 'unethical' as it does not suit their political bias the food points seem to be bedding in.

That’s extraordinary. What part of tge world are you living in and how wide is your circle?

A million times this! History will not look kindly upon those of you have supported Israel's actions. If there is any justice in this world Netanyahu and co will end up on trial for crimes against humanity. Hamas leaders too.

💯 agree.

Exactly! The assumption that it's due to a lack of internationalism being shown by some posters is reductive.

I've lived in several countries, not limited to Europe, and have friends of lots of different nationalities. The support for Gaza is universal among them. Even in the US. Don't be fooled by official government official standpoints.

I don't believe this, even the most rigourous Israel supporters feel obliged to say they feel for the innocents, even if it is just lip service.

I'm aware that is the pro-Israel party line. It's what the average person on the street thinks though. If it's on their radar.

That just shows how culturally reflexive anti Semitism is.
Is that good, then?
Funnily enough, it also shows the subconcious anti Blackness of anti Semites.
The Rwandan and the Sudanese objective genocides cannot come to their minds, one happening in recent living memory and another been happening for decades, still going on and has led to a Sudanese diaspora as far flung as Australia, Sweden, the US, UK, Canada and Europe.

You may need to think about the underthinking that your comment reveals.
It illuminates, as opposed to justifies.........

izthiszeend · 30/05/2025 11:14

It's not antisemitism.
Honestly - believe in whatever you want, even in flat earth, one god or many. Dress as you wish (just standard rules of not being offensive). Eat whatever food you like - who cares?!

Burning, maiming, killing children, targeting food suplies, hospitals, starving populations - that's what people oppose wholeheartedly! [Not just children ofc, but that used to be a universal value iyswim].
And if you ever dare accuse people of antisemitism when they voice that - than you are defending these actions as 'Jewish' - i.e. you are being obnoxiosly antisemitic. Please stop!

You know you label it anti Semitism because that is the get out card for the atrocities being unleashed by Israel.

Basically, any comment on what they are doing is excused through that label. Very convenient to be able to hang that label on it.

Is there ANYTHING you wouldn't tolerate by them? What about when Palestine is completely gone? When the Palestinians are all displaced or dead?

Why would you even mention lip service?

I support Israel but my disgust lies with Hamas & their supporters not innocent Palestinian people who didn’t choose to get dragged into a war.

Is there any limit to your support of what the Israeli Gov are doing? Are you willing to support them through genocide?

I don’t believe they are committed genocide at the moment. I believe they are trying to kill Hamas who have embedded themselves amongst civilians in the most disgusting way such as under hospitals.

There is of course a limit to the actions I support. For example, I didn’t support Israel blocking humanitarian aid and think they should have reinstated it much quicker than they did and made the aid hubs more accessible to everyone ( apart from Hamas).

What more will it take for you to decide that maybe it is genocide? 100,000 dead - maybe 500,000 - maybe not one Palestinian left in Gaza? When do you think enough innocents have died?

What about the constant theft of Palestinian land by settlers? 22 new settlements (aka theft of land) approved in the last 24 hours.

What about Netanyahu statement that Israel's goal is to wipe out all possibility of a Palestinian state (January)?

What else is it if Israel is stealing all Palestinian land and killing all Palestinians?

CopperWhite · 30/05/2025 14:41

Gary will be fine. There is no demise to his career, he has plenty of opportunity. The BBC is not the only media outlet. He’s turning down offers because he’s popular, and no one with any sense believes he is anti semitic.

I admire him for standing up for what is right even though it brings him so much unfair criticism.

Do you support Israel's current military action which has caused thousands of civilian deaths and casualties despite most EU countries calling it unacceptable?

My few Jewish friends think Netanyahu has gone too far, but now the IDF has killed the last Hamas leaders based under the hospital and the aid is going back in, they just want the war to stop, but they want Hamas gone.
They can’t have it both ways if Hamas won’t surrender (they won’t, they are fanatics), and won’t agree to the proposed ceasefire.
