Illegal!!!!! What do you mean like killing 40,000+ people illegal?

FFS.

Yes, it was a breach of the Equality Act I think, which makes it illegal. It might seem like a small thing to you but equality is quite an important value in democratic societies. In a democracy, different crimes are considered more serious than others though and I've never come across anyone who would think that killing 40,000 people was of equal weight to barring someone from a competition. However, even the most fanatical Palestinian supporter wouldn't, I think, argue that ALL the deaths in this war are illegal. Even if some deaths have breached international law/laws of combat (which has not been adjudicated, and does happen in wars) they aren't all. But lets say hypothetically Israel has illegally killed 40,000 people I don't think anyone would argue it was equal to a breach of the Equality Act. HTH.

I don't know, some people have crazy views when it comes to Israel and equality. The amount of apartheid denial for instance even though that has been through the courts some people still refuse to see it.

Who instructed the lawyers? Any sport person who competes on the international stage represents their country and, therefore their government who are elected by the citizens of said country.
Do you think that the UK government wouldn't have a word, directly or indirectly, with whoever is the legal representative of their athlete if they found themselves banned? I don't think it is a far fetch premise.

It's a bowls tournament, not the Olympics. It's perfectly possible that either the competitors themselves contacted the law firm or the law firm took it upon themselves to send the letter rather than some shadowy conspiracy with the Big Bad Israeli Government pulling the strings to ensure that some of their citizens get to compete at lawn bowling.

stomachamelon · 02/01/2025 17:57

@BoydTheApe that doesn't fit with the 'narrative' though does it?

I was just speculating; you chose to see it as a conspiracy theory. It wasn't.

Speculation that the Israeli government were conspiring to get involved with a discrimination case that didnt even come close to going to court in a relatively obscure sports competition in a different country.

Do you post that anytime someone in the UK breaks a law?

Nope, clearly not.

Do you support all crimes against humanity or just the ones carried out by the most moral army in the world?

OpheliaWasntMad · 02/01/2025 18:36

I honestly think that while there are legitimate reasons to criticise Israel this is clearly not one of them.

The use of UK lawyers to ensure Israeli bowls players could take part in a world tournament in the Uk is not a valid criticism of Israel and makes some posters look anti- Israeli (in my opinion )

No obviously not and I have never indicated otherwise, although what that has to do with the World Indoor Bowls Championship I have no fucking idea.

It’s bizarre the way everything is twisted on this thread.

I think that unless ALL people who might wish to compete equally under a flag may do so, none may do so.

Yes I understand. But it’s what the law says - not what you think . ( but obviously you’re entitled to your view)

Everything Israel does is political.

There is the white banner for those who do not wish to represent a state that is actively seeking the ethnic cleansing and genocide of its neighbours.

But maybe, just maybe, you really do have no fucking idea?

stomachamelon · 02/01/2025 22:14

@Daftasabroom and what skin do you have in the game?

Can you imagine how it feels to read that when the people you love live there. Dodge rockets there daily? Have the time it takes to post your rubbish to get to a bomb shelter? Because someone wants to wipe you off the face of the earth. Posts regularly that your ultimate destruction is their one and only aim.

Perhaps it's you that has no fucking idea.

Every single British person has skin in the game the whole time the British Government continues to provide export licenses to businesses supplying weapons and military support to the IDF.

But why are you fixated particularly on Israel when the British arms industry sells to other countries too?

Bit ableist, as well as generally insulting. But not surprising.

Have I missed your other threads about the undemocratic regimes we sell arms to? After all we have skin in the game there too?

Representing your country is a huge privilege that takes incredible effort and sacrifice. It should represent everything we hold dear including equality and fairness.

Israel is a democracy, it's representatives represent their nation - all of it and everything it does. Every nation and every society has it's dark side but Israel stands out as a nation openly committing crimes against humanity, annexing land, colonising it's neighbours.

We should not stand alongside any nation in any capacity that commits the crimes that Israel is now responsible for.
