It's an opinion 🙄

Yes - we can all have opinions can’t we?

To what extent is his rhetoric just bluff and bluster? Hard to know. He’s so full of BS and so changeable*

Yes trump just says things. Sure what could he even mean by that. It's not like the US military will go into Gaza.

He's just trying to show strength. It doesn't say a long lasting peaceful solution to me.

mollyfolk · 30/12/2024 17:47

I would think his public pronouncements are much less important to the negotiations than what is being said through diplomatic channels which probably wony be revealed. His public stuff is more likely for a domestic audience to keep his base happy

This is a very good point.

I’m not a fan of Trump and I don’t think he cares about anything much apart from money and power .
Im just trying to hope that he might persuaded that doing the right thing can benefit him…
Sometimes bad people do good things ( even if it’s for selfish reasons)

Shame his public pronouncement had to be made in the form of a threat that could alarm innocent civilians in Gaza.

How does his threat harm people? So silly. If its taken seriously at face value it may lead to the right people pulling their finger out and sorting a ceasefire. Unless you think Hamas and Iran want a war with the US. More likely is that the real work is going on behind the scenes.

I didn't say harm I said alarm people. If I lived in Gaza his words would alarm me.

No I don't

More likely is that the real work is going on behind the scenes.
Of course it is which is why I feel it's a shame his words could cause alarm to people when they are likely of no consequence.

I think there is real sense in this .
Hamas and Iran need to know they face a possible threat from US if they don’t focus on ceasefire and release of the hostages.
Israel needs to know they will be isolated and even more vulnerable if they don’t come to a just and peaceful resolution with Palestinians.

I think the Palestinians are made of sterner stuff than to be alarmed by Trump’s “big man” bluster.

Hamas did the October 7th attack because the Abraham Accords aka trump and others’ normalisation strategy was about to come to fruition. Trump wants everyone to stop fighting so he can get back to that. Yes it’s about trade, money, etc. It will never work as it was originally planned - sidelining the Palestinians and without giving them a place at the table - unless essentially the genocide is completed or else Gaza and West Bank are annexed or something approaching that. Gaza has been flattened a la Dresden. So much more than a ceasefire is required now. There is literally no way that trump will in any way prioritise anything approaching a just solution for Palestinians.

I think people living in the hell that is Gaza will have had their resilience tested over and over and would be feeling pretty traumatised and vulnerable right now. Whatever we think of Trump he'll be the president of the United States in two weeks. His words hold weight whether they are meant for his base or not.

Apologies - it was vague. But I don’t think the children living in tents will be thinking too much about Trump.
None of us knows what the future holds . I’m trying to be hopeful because I can’t do anything to help and I can only hope and pray

I agree. Trump will focus on what’s in it for him.
I don’t think a just solution will come about overnight. It will take years / generations even 😣.
The most we can hope for in the short term is cessation of violence and release of the hostages and assurances of immediate economic support ( food and shelter and medical help) and security for the people who have lost everything in Gaza.

Most of them feel their death is imminent and half want to die so I'd imagine not.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2024/dec/11/death-feels-imminent-for-96-of-children-in-gaza-study-finds

There will need to be a huge huge amount of support for these children. For their mental / emotional / physical health. Plus all the missed education and the play time that children need .
I am sure we would all be happy to contribute to that

Jesus that is so stark. I can't even imagine the trauma. All these children will grow up into traumatised adults as well. It doesn't bode well for the future.

"Almost all the children (96%) felt their death was imminent, and 49% actually wished to die"

The trauma these children are experiencing is beyond belief.
Yet this is defended again and again.

The reality is that that help probably won't be available, and even if it was it wouldn't fix it.

Im going to do fundraising at my church .
If we all do our bit ..
We can never “fix it” but we can help ( in a small way) to make a future seem possible for a child who has lost everything.

OpheliaWasntMad · 30/12/2024 19:26

It’s the children that break all our hearts . Both Palestinian and Israeli hostages .

That’s a great idea. I think it can be a good approach to choose one small charity that people can really connect with. It can make it feel less overwhelming and also more humanised. You can form personal connections with the people you are helping.

For instance, there is an amazing charity based in the Bethlehem (West Bank) refugee camp Aida, that supports disabled children and their carers through selling handicrafts made by the women and also through cookery workshops. These can be online. They also used to do home stays in the camp but obviously can’t right now. https://noorweg.wordpress.com/

Another really great thing to do is sponsor olive trees to be grown from seedlings and given to West Bank farmers who have had their olive trees destroyed by settlers. Zaytoun do it and others too. https://zaytoun.uk/plant-a-tree/

I think just showing people that the world cares goes such a long way.

feel free to DM me if you’d like any more info on these above ❤️

Noor Women's Empowerment Group

We are a grassroots independent project created by and for refugee women from Aida and al-Azzeh refugee camps (Bethlehem, Palestine) who have children with disabilities and/or are solely in charge …

Obviously both of the above relate to the West Bank not Gaza - but we mustn’t forget the West Bank and in some ways it’s easier to think of ways to constructively help people actually have dignified lives there 😢
