This is just one of those classic and predictable I/P threads. The left have always sided with the worst "anti-Western" terrorist scumbags. Back in the seventies it was the IRA, Baader-Meinhoff and the Red Brigades. Today, it's Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis. The sight of middle class students marching around proclaiming that they want an "Intifada" is simply pathetic. Fortunately, the British people in 2019 and the American people in 2024 have given terrorist student politics the boot. Far too sensible.

I’m glad voices around the world are not happy with what Israel is doing against Palestinians.

most majority of people side with innocent civilians and not with Hamas.

I hope you mean the extreme left, the majority of left leaning people do not side with terrorists or hold anti western views, what a weird black and white view you have of the world.

Back in the seventies it was the IRA
News to me that the IRA were anti-western!

They weren't anti western their aim was for a democratic socialist Republic, their political wing Sinn Fein is a democratically elected party. None of that is anti western.

What's black & white about that. The left has always been overly sympathetic to assorted anti-western dictators & terrorists. Look at Corbyn & Galloway cavorting with Assad, Saddam Hussein, 'our friends in Hamas & Hezbollah', the unions & other lefties supporting Cuba, various South American groups like the Sandinistas. The Red Brigades etc were hugely fashionable. Lefties have been wearing Kefiyehs in support of terrorists for years. My god this is not in any way news. Anyone who has been on the left as many decades as I have knows this to be true and its very well documented.

GentleScroller · 28/12/2024 18:50

It's my understanding that:

The term "Palestine" refers to a geographic region in the Middle East that includes the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Israel. The term comes from the Philistines, an ancient people who lived on the coast of what is now Israel and the Gaza Strip. The Romans reapplied the term to the region after defeating the final Judean uprising in 135 CE. Romans renamed Judea to Syria Palestina, which was later shortened to Palestine in the early 2nd century CE to suppress Jewish nationalism. More than a century after Jesus was crucified.

The term "Palestinian" refers to the Arabs who live in the region of Palestine. The term was first used by Khalil Beidas in 1898 in the preface of a book he translated. The Arabs of Palestine began to use the term more widely in the pre-World War I period. After 1948, the term came to signify a sense of shared past and future for Palestinians.

Jesus was born into a Jewish family in Judea long before the region was given the name Palestina by the Romans.

If the Pope wants to show sympathy to the people of Gaza, I have no objection. If he wants to console the relatives of all the hostages taken on 7th of October, I have no objection. But to politicise a nativity scene, allowing the addition of a keffiyeh scarf, suggesting—yet again—that Jesus was a Palestinian is ridiculous and wrong.

You probably think this gesture showed solidarity with Palestinians and reinforced your belief that Jesus was a Palestinian not a Jew. Well all it achieved was to create more division. As a Christian he is meant to unite people of all faith not undermine his own churches doctrine.

SharonEllis · 28/12/2024 18:59

Whatsinanamehey · 28/12/2024 15:44

If we are going by that, then holocaust survivors like Stephen Kapos have a greater claim than you. And he, like others have called Israel's actions in Gaza, a genocide.

Why so nasty? Can you not disagree without abusing someone who has personal, painful history?

I see it as a black and white view there are many nuances and differing views on the left and the right, there are extreme views on either side which are not shared by the majority. I think the UK has a very black and white political system as does America many countries have far more political spectrums to choose from and I know in Ireland we don't tend to view things from a left/ right perspective. To suggest the majority of people on the left are terrorist supporters is simply not true. You bring up Corbyn would you view him as similar to Starmer? Galloway! He's hardly representive of anyone

SharonEllis · 28/12/2024 19:02

It wasn't called Palestine then. It was named by the Romans ('settler-colonialists') much later and even then Palestina Syria. Jesus was a Jew from Judea as stated, correctly, by @YourAmplePlumPoster

Missed this bit, wearing the Keffiyeh does not mean you are a supporter of terrorists, unless you are equating all Palestinians with terrorists

Nobody said the majority of people on the left are terrorist supporters. Who cares what I think about Starmer & Corbyn, though very obviously they are not similar. Galloway was a very popular left wing politician before he went full crank. I dont know what a black & white political system is but I doubt that either UK or US have one. The nature of first past the post means that 'left' and 'right' in the UK are actually huge coalitions of different views.

I didn't say that either.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 28/12/2024 19:25

Israel is so genocidal that they allowed Gazans to cross over and work in Israel for good salaries prior to 7th October. As all the historians amongst you know, Nazi Germany prohibited Juden from owning businesses or working in any professions. The genocide and Nazi accusations against Israel are pure anti semitism and are deliberately used to keep the anti semitism going.

The poster I was originally responding to did

Who cares what I think about Starmer & Corbyn, though very obviously they are not similar.
I don't care I was merely highlighting the nuances and how things aren't black and white when you can get such different people leading the same political party.

I dont know what a black & white political system
Labour or Tory, Republican or Democrat.

The nature of first past the post means that 'left' and 'right' in the UK are actually huge coalitions of different views.
No proportional representation does that, first past the post has pretty much produced labour or Tory for as long as I can remember. Of course there's differing views within the party but they are all still from the same party with the same ethos and manifesto.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 28/12/2024 19:30

Anyone who is interested should look up the history of how the left became entangled in Arab nationalism in the seventies. It's eye opening. Prior to that, the left was very sympathetic to Jews seeing as how most of the lefts major intellectuals were Jewish.

It's so easy to just say it's anti-semitic to call a spade a spade - Israel is carrying out a genocide in Gaza, to shut down the truth.
Are the holocaust survivors calling it a genocide also anti-semitic?

Think this is a disgusting post. Just because they don’t agree with them doesn’t mean they’re attention seeking nuts. They went through something horrible. They don’t have to have the same opinion as yours.

I don't know how you are connecting the dots here. Its like saying the fact Israel have Palestinians living in apartheid and racial segregation proves there is a genocide. One doesn't relate to the other. Israel letting Gazans work in Israel didn't even happen in the same time period as when they are accused of genocide.
