Conflict in the Middle East

Is the current rioting in the UK linked to Gaza?

mids2019 · 05/08/2024 09:25

Although the Southport killings were the trigger for rioting in the UK has the focused attention on Gaza including mass marches lead to a new sectarianism in the UK? I am not condoning mindless thuggery in any way but do we now have a situation where mainly Muslim Gaza supporters "squaring off' with EDL/extreme reform types.

How do you balance the right to expression and to assemble with what is becoming a challenging police operarion?

Last time there were riots were 2011. Do you think like OP they’re happening now because part of the citizens is against what is going on in Gaza?

That's not the last time there were riots.

He certainly is a friend to israel. Are you actually kidding

He is NOT and never will be a 'friend to Israel '. Are you stupid? He is using Jewish people for his own ends.

Oh ok it’s the ones I keep seeing in the news being referred to, but probably there have been several ones since then as well.

Rainbowsponge · 06/08/2024 00:08

From this I’m assuming there is a link? No idea what though

What he says about Muslims pales in comparison to what is said in the israeli parliament. Tommy seemed happy enough when he visited and posed on their tanks and wore IDF t shirts and spouted Israeli government talking points. But sure a government that is happy to commit racist war crimes and spends millions cultivating pro israeli propaganda abroad and online is certainly being used by Tommy Robinson. Riiight.
Some Jewish people love the guy and are out in the street spouting hateful things against Muslims wrapped in Israeli flags alongside non Jewish people doing the same, but they're victims, being suckered in?
If these protests are about gaza can't we equally say they're about israel too.

'some Jewish people love the guy'

Where do you get this garbage from? I've no doubt if you travel the cesspit that is SM you will find some Muslims 'who love the guy' too.

I do think there is a risk of conflation if the Palestinian flag is used as a counter protest. The correct counter protest is either the display of the England flag or Union flag by those counter protectors as it simply says we are all British and this is our flag independent if ethnicity or faith.

The introduction of the Palestinian flag as a pp states introduces a sectarian element that needn't be there.

There is a concern by all for good community relations.

You sound like a bot.

You don't think any Jewish people love Tommy Robinson and that there's none at his protests?

He openly hates islam. He loves Israel. No I'm not going to find Muslims that love him and wrap themselves in their flags at his rallies. Why do you need to pretend, you could spend less than 5 minutes looking it up. And by cesspit of SM do you mean photos of it happening? Over the last decade or so?

Thugs with Palestinian flags!
Victims with israeli flags! or, it didn't happen!
Such ridiculous double standards ,constantly.

Here's a Haaretz article about israel flags at EDL rallies from 2010 to get you started on your journey. Stay delusional

Because Israeli flags have been misappropriated at EDL rallies does not mean that Jews support EDL/Tommy Robinson.
You are the delusional one, not me.

I didn't say Jews as in all of them, I said some Jewish people. Don't twist my words now. The Jewish division of the EDL was a thing, give that interesting article a read.

Literally how? By saying that some Jewish people love Tommys rhetoric enough to wave israeli flags at his protests which have turned nasty, and that this should be looked at the same as Palestinian flag waving Muslim protestors at protests that have turned nasty, in the context of this post, 'are the riots about gaza?'
Riiiihght

EllenLRipley · 06/08/2024 01:53

It is massively to do with the grooming of young girls by men. I know many find this unpalatable, but read what Maggie Oliver has said. She is wise.

knitnerd90 · 06/08/2024 03:14

Where have you got the idea that Jews like Tommy Robinson? He's an antisemite. It's just that he hates Muslims even more, so he says "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" and makes a show of liking Israel.

the British far right is and always has been deeply antisemitic and Jews certainly know that. Any Jew (and I am one) who uses Robinson's logic to support the EDL is a fool.

I do think Palestinian flags shouldn't be brought in, it starts conflating the two conflicts.

Didn't take long for Jews to be blamed, did it. Why am I not surprised to read this on this board. There may well be Jews who mistakenly think TR is their friend. I'd put good money on them being a tiny (very misguided) minority. They are being used imho. They are in the same league as people from ethnic minority backgrounds who vote Reform, or high profile nutters like Suella B. Or do you think she is representative of British Asians?

Lou670 · 06/08/2024 06:19

No I don't think it is. It originally started as the leader of their group was sent down so they rebelled. It has now got that anyone is just joining in whether or not they have a cause, It has just snowballed.

EasternStandard · 06/08/2024 06:20

I think this. The treatment of women and girls seems to fall second to race and religion but a lot has been brushed under the carpet.

Octavia64 · 05/08/2024 09:27

No.

Very little to do with Gaza

Very little? It's not related at all.

MySocksAreDotty · 06/08/2024 07:06

It seems like a real reach to connect the two, OP.

Sandyankles · 06/08/2024 07:10

Yes.
The already racist right-wing groups have been fed images of Islamic people marching, Palestinian flag waving etc. They’ve seen footage of the initial attack on Israel. They’ve read conspiracy theories about grooming in Rotherham and been told that the police wouldn’t act. They know that any discussion or protest about immigration gets shut down and called racist. Then they saw the attack on the police at Manchester airport and heard the week defence of the police by the pm and Home Secretary. Fake news about those poor little girls + some hot weather was the spark but it could have been anything.

It’s very obvious that we have a large group of disenfranchised men and that’s a problem. In earlier times they would have been working the land or going off fight. They would have been respected, useful and had an illusion of power. All that has gone, the world has moved on and left them behind. Now it’s the geek that has the power - the quiet, clever nerdy types that they look down on and women increasingly don’t need them either.

There’s little future for those who don’t engage at school and leave with minimal skills or qualifications and sadly huge numbers of young men don’t realise this and behave appallingly from a young age, as their parents did.

Quite why these people think attacking the police, burning libraries and looting is the answer to their anger is more of a question.

localnotail · 06/08/2024 07:33

I would say people displaying it at the riots are using as a symbol, perhaps of resistance or unity or whatever. Or simply signifying they are Muslim above all. I doubt it has anything to do with specifically pro-Gaza marches etc.
