Conflict in the Middle East

Is the current rioting in the UK linked to Gaza?

mids2019 · 05/08/2024 09:25

Although the Southport killings were the trigger for rioting in the UK has the focused attention on Gaza including mass marches lead to a new sectarianism in the UK? I am not condoning mindless thuggery in any way but do we now have a situation where mainly Muslim Gaza supporters "squaring off' with EDL/extreme reform types.

How do you balance the right to expression and to assemble with what is becoming a challenging police operarion?

@DiamondGoldandSilver I really agree with what you have said.

mids2019 · 05/08/2024 18:27

@DiamondGoldandSilver

Agree.

The mass Gaza protests may have inadvertently polarised views in UK society.

The mass of people who thought that Gaza should be the number one priority of the UK government possibly have brought into stark view disconnect within society.

Currently carrying out anti Israel protests could be an increasing challenge and there must be care given to the accusations of two tier policing.

One worrying thing would be to have peaceful matches by both Gaza supporters and those concerned with immigration as this may drive a sectarian wedge into society.

We need calm heads and unity at the moment.

No I don’t think so. I think any excuse to unleash the latent antisemitism and Islamophobia is willingly embraced by those who have always been xenophobic and hostile to minorities. Gaza upped the antisemitism and misinformation and goading about the man who murdered the girls in Southport, whipped up the current Islamophobia . I’ve always felt those sentiments were there but now it’s like every thug who loathes us, has a mandate to go out on the streets and show us exactly how they feel.

I wish that would happen. I’m not optimistic.

Somerandomerontheinternet · 05/08/2024 18:32

What the fuck?! No.

Really really not.

MouseofCommons · 05/08/2024 18:32

No. They couldn't even find Gaza on a map.

Who has said this?

Look at the post from the post from diamondgoldandsilver.

No the riots have absolutely nothing to do with Gaza or any other overseas issues. It has everything to do with right wing fascists like Farage, Tommy Robinson etc. also encouraged on SM by Russian bots wanting to stir up trouble in the UK.

ScrollingLeaves · 05/08/2024 18:42

DavidBeckhamsrightfoot · 05/08/2024 15:26

I don't believe it's related at all.
I don't think many int he UK are very engaged with the issues in Gaza. Its very similar to the constant wars that have occurred through the world for decades.

This is it's own thing. It's been brewing for a long time. It's what gave way to Brexit and the rise of Farage.

That is what I think too.

I don't think they are connected in an obvious, causal sense. But the UK has witnessed a lot of antisemitism over the past few months and arguably that has been a sign of things to come. Antisemitism is often a sign of trouble brewing for other minorities.

So true. 'First they came for ... ' Poem by Pastor Martin Niemoller written in 1946 springs to mind.

Efacsen · 05/08/2024 19:29

NO

Please stop the goady nonsense

INeedARest22 · 05/08/2024 19:37

There were hundreds of peaceful protests demonstrated by many people of faith and no faith. What is happening in Gaza is not a Muslim issue it is a humanitarianism one. Please stop being goady. A genocide in Gaza has nothing to do with these thugs.

completeworks · 05/08/2024 19:40

Many Muslim protesters in Birmingham are wearing Palestinian flags right now

HelenHen · 05/08/2024 20:25

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 05/08/2024 17:58

Oh ffs. More goady bs. So we're blaming those who protest against genocide for the far right rioting and being the shits that they are? Wtf am I reading on mumsnet these days?

Couldn't agree more. Not sure wtf I'm reading here.

No the thuggish far right racist protests against immigration and all things not-white are NOT connected to the peaceful anti genocide protests that took place recently. I mean Jesus... what an odd thing to post.

LaRaLaRa · 05/08/2024 21:27

The ignorance on here is once again astounding! Words thrown around all over the place. There are posters being gory on this thread and the OP definitely isn’t one of them.

Flibflobflibflob · 05/08/2024 21:49

I think seeing the gaza protests could feed into a sense that there are a bunch of people in the UK, who care more about events abroad than they are about the UK. I think the yougov polling shows that 31% are sympathetic with gaza, 22% Israeli the rest is neither or don’t know (47%).

I think if I’m being honest it’s probably a drip drip of crime (rotherham) terrorism and the saliency of Gaza for some groups plus it’s summer. Recent weeks has had loads of news stories primarily involving ethnic minorities. I agree with pp it’s been a long time brewing. People aren’t seeing these things as discrete issues but more as a narrative around a group of people and who they are.

If you believe that immigrants and the children of immigrants are fundamentally different then you are going to lump all this stuff together in your head. If you don’t actually know anyone who’s an immigrant or descended from non white immigrants it’s going to be easier to demonise.

To be honest can’t quite get over the irony of rioting and trashing the place to “protect” your country. The idiots who have come out in birmingham and started hanging around outside pubs and flying palestine flags are not going to help matters either. Someone slashed sky news’s media vans tires Heres hoping the police tell them all to go home.

Farage , Robinson , EDL and far right and their rioting have existed long before 7-10 so not sure why you’re trying to link the two of them. the only things they might have in common is that those anti far right are probably concerned about Palestinian civil rights.

regarding the flags , not everyone attending the counter marches will be British , so why should they be carrying a British flag ? The far right marches are against immigration (and specially Muslim people) so not everyone will have a British background.

I'll turn this around. Why are they holding Palestinian flags? If people want to uphold British society they should not be waving flags of other countries, at least imo. Sorry if you don't agree.
These are right wing organised riots. There hasn't been wide spread riots of this type for years even though the far right elements in our society have existed for years going back to Mosley's Blackshirts in the 1930s. They are no better or worse than the far left elements. Both hate Jews.

OhMaria2 · 05/08/2024 23:25

mids2019 · 05/08/2024 12:25

I think a stand should be made against the thugs that are spouting anti Semitic and Islamaphobic nonsense.

Maybe the xenophobia can be a uniting place for Jews and Muslims in the UK against xenophobia in general. We should feel common bonds as a nation for all faiths and ethnicities.

The media has been lying about or down playing the vicious slaughter being perpetrated by Israel. People have spent months being told that slaughtering children is justified because they're Muslim. Gee how did a mob get whipped into anti Muslim hate so quickly. By people spouting shit like objecting to ethnic cleansing is anti semitic for months and months

Ate you going to mention the Israeli flags amongst the Saint George's crosses? Do you think that's connected to Gaza?

Last time there were riots were 2011. Do you think like OP they’re happening now because part of the citizens is against what is going on in Gaza?

blackcherryconserve · 05/08/2024 23:31

No I don't think they have anything at all to do with Gaza.

All the Jewish people I know abhor that the Israeli flag is being waved around by these right wing thugs who follow Tommy Robinson. He is no friend of Israel or Jewish people.
