I think they might!

ssd · 02/06/2024 20:09

Whilst I'm appalled at the slaughter going on in Gaza, i dont think its right to ban a whole country, there are Israelis as appalled at whats going on as i am.

HermioneWeasley · 02/06/2024 20:12

Have they banned Chinese people because of the genocide against the Uighurs? Or Syrians or Iranians because of the appalling acts of their government? If not, it just looks a lot like anti semitism.

quantumbutterfly · 02/06/2024 20:15

The official X handle of the State of Israel has reacted to a post that lists the names of countries that deny entry to Israeli passport holders. Notably, a page called World Of Statistics has named a few countries that don't allow Israeli citizens on their land. These countries are Algeria, Bangladesh, Brunei, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen.
Reacting to the list, Israel wrote, ''We'are good.''

Me either, I would support all countries banning entry for members of the knesset, serving members of the IDF, anyone that works in military prisons/the military justice system, the 10% of Israelis that live in occupied territory and probably more if I took the time to think about it. An outright ban on everyone seems unfair though but it may be easier(and cheaper) to just impose an outright ban than a visa system.

TomeTome · 02/06/2024 20:57

I think what you have to do is think what can a small country with little political power do to make their position as loud as possible? I would say the Maldives are using what they have to make their feelings heard.

Chickenuggetsticks · 02/06/2024 21:01

Individuals yes but not an entire country.

Good point. The example of Uighurs is very hard to ignore and so the Maldives are be very hypocritical and selective.

LettuceTruss · 02/06/2024 21:05

Most Israelis have at least one other nationality. One of my friends is Swiss through her father, Austrian and Israeli through her mother, British through naturalisation, French through marriage and she has just become American through residence.

Were you also appalled at the slaughter that happened on October 7th?

Tully1557 · 02/06/2024 21:20

@Hedgeoffressian really? Still? I think Israel have been reassured endlessly that everyone thought October 7th was horrific. Nothing, absolutely nothing, makes what has happened to Palestinians since then ok. October 7th is dwarfed in my mind by the death toll and psychological trauma of Palestinians since. All lives matter. Israeli lives are not worth more than Palestinian lives.

Yeah, Israeli’s really aren’t missing out on anything.

I guess the only travel ban worth losing one’s mind over was Trump’s travel ban - no one seems arsed about banning Israeli’s.

headstone · 02/06/2024 21:26

I can testify Algeria is a really great country to visit, so are the Maldives I’d imagine. Although tbh I wouldn’t want Algeria full of tourists so maybe it’s best to shut up about that.

You can be appalled by both. It's like walking and talking at the same time. Not difficult.

EllaDisenchanted · 02/06/2024 22:20

Judenrein

👀

GreenFairies · 02/06/2024 22:25

I mean, didn’t America impose a travel ban that did the same thing?

Edit as pressed send too soon! Countries have a history of making a show about banning other countries so it’s not actually that unique in this situation.

While I'm in awe of your friend's multiculturalism, it is simply untrue to claim that "most" Israelis have another passport. There aren't great statistics on how many Israelis (especially of those who live in Israel) are dual citizens, but Israel isn't even in the top 5 for countries with the highest percentage of dual citizens. Even in Switzwerland, the country with the highest percentage of citizens who have a 2nd passport, it's less than 20% so your statement is simply wrong.

I think it's around 10% of Israelis (who live in Israel) are dual nationals. I may be wrong on that statistic, but it's definitely nowhere even close to that poster's "most Israelis" which is just made up.

all of those countries have more authoritarian regimes which impacts their own people. There will be many people claiming asylum with those nationalities ect..

I guess it all adds up to pressure on the Israeli authorities. Will ordinary citizens be happy that Israeli is losing it’s standing internationally to such an extent. The Maldives is a major tourist destination so that is where it can ensure it’s voice is heard.

Amazing to see the irony of getting enraged over racism whilst simultaneously saying "I could live without their citizens turning up looking for handouts so let's block them too"

🙄

Are any of those countries targeting Muslim people in another state/country?

Does targeting Muslim people in their own countries not count?
