Conflict in the Middle East

UK revokes visa of law student who addressed pro-Palestine protest

With all the recent threads about the protests, I wonder what everyone thinks about the U.K. Government revoking the visa of 19 year old law student Dana Abuqamar. She said that:

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, but it seems to not apply to ethnic minorities, particularly Muslims and Palestinians like myself.”

She is challenging the decision and has accused the U.K. of hypocrisy. These are her comments, which she said have been taken out of context:

I always see written on Mumsnet that “freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequence.”

Do you think the Government’s decision is the correct one?

@hooksbell She is a teenager, 19 years old, who says 15 members of her family were killed by an Israeli bomb in a residential area in Gaza.

Sadly, many people have suffered in Israel's war on Hamas but haven't got the advantage of being able to leave the area and further their education.

She needs to practice gratitude for the opportunity to improve her life.

The only "bile" I can see is coming from her.

fashionqueen0123 · 17/05/2024 22:31

I doubt she’d get legal aid.

Secondly the home office have been known to reject many people who have followed all the rules so I really doubt they’ll change their minds on this one.

TizerorFizz · 17/05/2024 22:39

Some lawyer might well act pro bono for her.

YaMuvva · 17/05/2024 23:00

From your OP video - she is full of joy and pride that a terrorist attack happened to hundreds of innocent Israeli’s including children.

Im guessing that if you are lucky enough to get a Visa to study in a country you probably should overt the laws of that country. In the U.K. we don’t take kindly to people who are joyous over the actions of terrorists. Get her deported, along with her dangerous ideology

NotSoBigCrocodile · 17/05/2024 23:01

Oh, my comment was deleted 😂

I mean, it had nothing on:

@Myb

From the video posted above, she said something along the lines of she is glad it has come to this...she didn't mention hamas specifically and there is a big crowd behind her, reasonable to assume that she is in a protest and that comment could be attributed to that...I.e. I'm glad to see people finally speaking up for the Palestinians. It's just that she so happens to be speaking for a side that the Brits, Americans couldn't care less about. So I'm actually not surprised at the responses on this thread. As I said earlier, the hypocrisy has been badly exposed.

No one believes that. Not even you. If you agree with her, that’s fine, but at least be honest about it. Admit it. Where is your integrity?

Is she Palestinian? Sorry, can't access twitter at work. I saw headlines this morning and can't remember - but if so surely she can claim asylum? She can't be deported to a war zone?

I’m guessing she’s one of the Americans who says they’re a nationality that they are not in fact a part of, but their great grandma was so they think they are too

They’re entirely justified. I’m sure law students wishing to live in this country peacefully are ten a penny and she’s taking someone’s rightful place

Lol you have basically described the state of Israel.

Myb · 18/05/2024 00:01

Lol you have basically described the state of Israel.

Literally have done the opposite.

Americans born in or emigrated to the USA are American

Israelis born in or emigrated to Israel are Israeli.

What did you think they were?!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 17/05/2024 19:15

No you didn't. You said the man responsible for 10s of 1000s of deaths was my current foreign secretary. My current foreign secretary is Tobias Billström.

Yes, free speech isn't really allowed in the UK and people aren't allowed to say what they really think

Yup.

Mine got removed because I said something uncomplimentary about Smotrich.

So you can't say MN is biased against Israel !

🙂

I actually feel sick that you think a terrorist massacre in which women and children were raped and murdered is 'legitimate'. Of course it didn't come out of the blue but there could never be any justification for what they did.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 18/05/2024 10:07

At last our inept gov makes a good decision.
"Freedom of speech" is not a free for all ie anything goes and that is a fact

When comparing England to many other countries, reasonable people will appreciate what "freedom of speech" really is - they need to go and try it out in China, Russai, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Indonesia, etc, etc

I don't get this 70+ years of oppression and exploitation of the Palestinian people by the Israelis.

From 1948 to 1967 Gaza was under the military control of Egypt.
It was taken by Israel after the "6 day War" in 1967 (and also Sinai Peninsula)
Israel pulled out of both areas in 2005.

What we now know as the "West Bank" was originally called Transjordan.
It was part of the British Mandate of Palestine and was illegally annexed by Jordan in 1950 and became under the control of Jordan.
Jordan gave all the inhabitants Jordanian passports.
In 1988 Jordan pulled out and cancelled the passports it had given out leaving a lot of people stateless.

So what had Israel to do with all this?

Palestinians living on the West Bank should have a bigger beef with Jordan than Israel IMO

noblegiraffe · 18/05/2024 10:20

People who celebrate the terrorism of October 7th should have their visa revoked, people who justify terrorism on MN should have their MN accounts revoked.

Support for terrorism should not be welcome here.

This is absolutely chilling.

I wonder if this is something you would only say behind an anonymous account, or whether you have enough integrity to attach your name and face to your beliefs?

It is terrifying to hear a woman say that mass rape of women, children and the elderly is a legitimate act and I don’t understand how, as a society, we have got to this point.

If you think the eradication of oppressors in this manner is a legitimate expression of the right of resistance to oppression, I can’t see why you would have any issue with the eradication of oppressors (including women and children) via gas chambers. What is the difference?

When people look back and wonder how the Holocaust could ever happen, this is how. By assigning labels to human beings and marking them worthy of death.

Do you really think anyone thinks it just happened out of the blue? No one is that stupid!

Posts like yours, I'm afraid, are counterproductive because they give fuel to Daily Mail readers who can see no other solution than eliminating Gaza from the world map if "as an Arab" you keep presenting 7 Oct as "a legitimate expression of the right of resistance to oppression." What next?

Hamas shot itself in the foot by showing the whole world, not just Israelis and Jews, just what they are capable of. It's not easy to draw a veil over and say "Ah well, never mind, they had their reasons." And if "as an Arab" you stand by them proudly, WTF?!

I'm still waiting for some to tell me where the idea of "70+ years of oppression of Palestinians by Israel" came from.

Looks like I'll be waiting a long time 🙄

Exactly...which is why I find this current backlash and hatred so mind boggling.

I've reported the post supporting terrorism and it seems MNHQ have not decided to delete it. I would suggest that others who also don't want terrorism support on MN also report it, because, wtf?
