There are concerns that the report was watered down, but even so, it's a new level of criticism to say these issues formally in a report at this level.

US says Israel may have breached international law with American weapons in Gaza

Report says it is "reasonable to assess" there have been breaches in Gaza, but admits it does not have "complete information".

The UN must get rid of the veto powers. The US vetoing ceasefires has been allowed to continue for far too long.

I'm increasingly thinking the same thing.

The UN is no longer fit for purpose (not denigrating the individuals in the field who work extremely hard), just like the League of Nations. Major reform is required or replacement.

I now see it as a "fig leaf" which acts to give former Colonial powers the cover of legitimacy as they sanction or protect countries on "their" side.

Well said. I see it as a "fig leaf", too and it's been made increasingly obvious this past year. The UN is useless due to those veto power. It breaks my heart seeing all these countries vote in favour of a ceasefire in Gaza, only for it to be vetoed by the same country every single time. Reform is definitely needed and the US's constant enabling of Israel has got to stop.

After all Israel is doing, he is giving them more?! It has been obvious for a long time that the only true obstacle in stopping the genocide is the US.

The US is not a former colonial power.

Selling, not giving.

The US is not a former colonial power.

That's debatable, the only indigenous "Americans" are those that occupied "Turtle Island" when the Europeans arrived and began systematically exterminating them. This Colonial behaviour continued after the USA was created in 1776 and "expanded".
It even expanded overseas: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territories_of_the_United_States

It has been extremely interesting reminding racist Americans of this fact as they've been complaining about immigration.

Yes, I think we are all aware of the origins of the USA and indigenous Americans. Not quite the issue when discussing geo-political power relations in bodies like the UN which include now-independent for colonised states and their ex-colonisers.

Selling, not giving.

Some of the billions of aid provided by the US to Israel is under the Foreign Military Financing which commits Israel to using the money to purchase American made military equipment.

So selling/giving would both be correct really.

From that Guardian article:
"Trump said on Saturday that Jordan and Egypt should take more Palestinians from Gaza. When asked if this was a temporary or long-term suggestion, Trump said: “Could be either.”

Washington had said last year it opposed the forcible displacement of Palestinians.

“I said to him I’d love you to take on more because I’m looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now and it’s a mess, it’s a real mess. I’d like him to take people,” Trump said about a call on Saturday with Jordan’s King Abdullah.

“I’d like Egypt to take people,” Trump told reporters, adding he would speak to Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday.

“You’re talking about a million and half people, and we just clean out that whole thing,” Trump said.

The population in Gaza prior to the start of the Israel-Gaza war was about 2.3 million.

Between arguing with Denmark over Greenland, threatening Panama, Trump is the walking naked face of American Imperialism.

Scirocco · 26/01/2025 09:43

This is how people talk when they're committing genocide and ethnic cleansing. People deny it, but it's as clear as it's ever been.

"Just clean out" Gaza.

Oh god. Trump makes me not just worried for the future of the Palestinians but the future of the world.

He's so openly considering ethnic cleansing. Like it's totally fine and the obvious solution.

I have been watching the 80th birthday anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz this afternoon. The stories told should have lessons on intolerance and cruelty everywhere, tragically including perpetrated on Palestinian women and children . "Clearing out" is part of this language, so shame on Trump.

And also remember those murdered on 7th October (mostly Jews) given it is the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz liberation. We are again facing anti semitism. Doubtless this will elicit a response that it is all our fault. I will not comment further on this particular thread. I've nothing to say to you. You know what you are and who you are.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/01/2025 19:02

@Pennina As do you.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/01/2025 19:19

And yes, Israel is facing anti semitism, which is hideous, and we should all of us fight it. Some Israelis have perpetrated the same on Palestine, and I suspect they will shortly continue to do so.

Leon Weintraub today was interesting, and thoughtful.

Tweet from Spanish journalist (translated)

The US sends Israel MK-84 bombs, which Biden had “frozen” due to their enormous destructive power and the risk of use in Gaza. With Trump's green light, they are now on Israeli soil. Each bomb weighs a tonne, creates 15m craters and has a lethal radius of 366m. A single bomb can destroy a neighbourhood and claim hundreds of lives.
