University students rising up against ties with Israel (title edited by MNHQ at request of OP)

Many university students are raising up against the ties their universities have with Israel. Students are asking for this agreements to stop
I can see this is happening in USA which has been in the news quite a lot but I can also read news about Paris as well as UK.

I really doubt much will change but I’m glad people are against these agreements. We can’t change what Israel / Hamas do. But we should be able to change what our governments / universities do.

No, I'd prefer it without the blood libel altogether, if that's not too much to ask.

Are you conflating pro Israel with Jewish?

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2024 19:28

Dickheads and racists on both sides.

I suspect people turning up to these things are ones who are up for a ruck.

I was curious what your takeaway would be from that video, no comment on the Pro-Israelis shouting you support the rape of women or the lovely Pro-Israeli gentleman squaring up and spitting at someone

Or the one “pro Israeli” that said “I hope you get raped”
but then again these are all said with the intention to incite and derail the protest

Weird that you also didn't notice that my takeaway from that video was that the Pro-Israeli demonstrators were being disgustingly racist. There was a lot of screaming insults and I didn't hear the rape of women comment but no, that's clearly not acceptable either is it? The aggressive spitting man was probably reacting to being called a fucking baby killer.

I didn't hear any of the pro-Israelis calling for more destruction so I'm not sure where you got that from. There are lots of ways to call for peace without resorting to tropes. They're all as bad as each other.

Mostly this, yes.

No, I'm conflating blood libel with antisemitism.

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2024 19:38

It is curious how there is a phenomenon of people who would claim that they are simply anti-Israel reaching for long-standing well-known antisemitic tropes to make their points.

ConnieCounter · 03/05/2024 19:42

I think we can safely assume those on the protest haven't killed any babies, but they're supporting a regime that's killed well over 13,000 children, including thousands of babies. So whilst calling them baby killers is inaccurate it's certainly accurate that they support a regime that is killing extraordinary numbers of babies.

Excellent! We're clearly on the same page so I look forward to seeing you practise what you preach a bit more in the future.

We're clearly on the same page
How insulting! I could explain why but I don't have the time.
I leave you with this quote "“Our judgments judge us, and nothing reveals us, exposes our weaknesses, more ingeniously than the attitude of pronouncing upon our fellows.” – Paul Valery

To me, what they are protesting about is irrelevant. My opinion remains that students are there to study and get an award in Higher Education so they do need to focus on that. They will have years ahead to protest so especially in the USA, where fees are so expensive, they need to jolly well do their best and fulfil their potential in their studies.

The reason regimes at war against people often target universities, their academics and students, (eg Israel bombing all the Palestinian universities) is because universities have students and academics who are thinkers within them, possibly critical ones, and they are the possible future leaders.

Universities are full of philosophy and politics and it has never been the case that students are only ever going to read their books, get a certificate at the end, then shut up.

Think of the protests against the Vietnam war. Or the protesting 1968 students wanting wholesale change.

Can you expand on this further? How is it antisemitic to point out that the pro Israel people, the ones who support Israel and therefore their actions, are supporting the killing of babies? We know for a fact that Israel are indeed killing babies and have been doing so at quite the astonishing rate. Are you saying that people are not allowed to point that out because it is 'blood libel'?

Also, they are protesting against their universities specifically so it's probably best to do that while they attend the university, and at the university, as it makes absolutely no sense otherwise.

What tropes are these?

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2024 20:07

TextureSeeker · 03/05/2024 19:52

What tropes are these?

Ones that I have seen either on here or on protest banners at pro-Palestinian marches or both
Jews control foreign governments
Jews control the media
Jews kill children and drink their blood
Jews are loyal to Israel and not their own country

Then under popular antisemitism:
Denying/minimising the holocaust
Comparing Jews to Nazis

I'm sure there's more. You'll have definitely seen them, possibly cunningly disguised by switching Jew for 'Zionist'.

I applaud your persistence but my god this thread has degenerated. People pretending they can't recognise an antisemitic trope when its under their nose is quite sickening.

The poster wrote, 'Would 'You endorse baby killing' have been more accurate for you?'

I wrote, 'Would shouting '13800 children dead and you still want it to continue as you're not calling for peace but instead more destruction' work?'

Where in that is 'Jews kill children and drink their blood'

13800 children have been killed, over 35000 have been killed, I am yet to see any Pro-Israel marches calling for a ceasefire or an end to the bloodshed

Sladering people with claims they're pushing blood libel, is disgusting

It’s a way of deflecting blame

Can you help me understand how there is a connection, because from what I see the slander is being used to silence the fact that 35000 people including 13800 children have been murdered

noblegiraffe · 03/05/2024 20:45

You think people are only calling Jews baby killers now?
Go back hundreds of years and you'll find people calling Jews baby killers.

By the way, standing in a line and yelling baby killer at people walking past is not normal behaviour.

Probably because it's become apparent that lots of these student protesters are immature, inarticulate, ill informed, priviledged bullies rather than heroic freedom fighters. And President Biden has said the protests have not changed his position on Israel.

OK, so shall we all just pretend 13800 children haven't been murdered?

Yeah I think we can all agree none of this is normal behaviour, from screaming baby killer at someone to a person killing children

telling people they should be raped is normal behaviour is it??

PeasfullPerson · 03/05/2024 20:57

Is there anyone on this thread who believes both of these things?

1 that the US university protests are out of control and need to be shut down

AND

2 the actions of Israel in Gaza are unacceptable

PeasfullPerson · 03/05/2024 20:59

Because I don’t recognise any of the usernames moaning about these protests, as being ones that have also been vocal about all the death and destruction in Gaza.

No, of course it isn't. I think you'll find I recently said there were dickheads and racists on both sides, and probably we're now in a situation where the people there are all up for a ruck.
