The Iranian guy who turns up every week with a "Hamas are terrorists" sign has been bundled to the ground by police and handcuffed.

Anyone know what is going on? https://x.com/incmonocle/status/1766476476444971241?s=61&t=U9XrcF693-JpMxeIueYG7g

Questions in parliament about it would be interesting .

Maybe he was protesting a different Hamas and not the one that's an ACTUAL proscribed organisation in the UK?

This video has a police officer saying he has been arrested for assault (can't quite hear the details). The Iranian guy seems to say that someone attacked him and he defended himself.

We've probably all seen videos of him being attacked before. I would love to know what the truth is here.

The guy videoing the arrest points out to the policeman that this guy is being treated very differently to the people who were chanting support for the Houthis on the same march.

He has just been released without charge. https://x.com/incmonocle/status/1766492365798113686?s=61&t=U9XrcF693-JpMxeIueYG7g

This is pretty horrifying, tbh. The video of him being forced to the ground by several officer is brutal, given that he has done nothing wrong. https://x.com/mrandyngo/status/1766486628401373694?s=61&t=U9XrcF693-JpMxeIueYG7g

Here's a video of the incident which led to his arrest. He was being attacked again. https://x.com/radoclub/status/1766486891531010130?s=61&t=U9XrcF693-JpMxeIueYG7g

Scirocco · 09/03/2024 16:19

@noblegiraffe that's horrible. And sadly not uncommon to experience that - the level of force seen in that video is experienced by ethnic minorities and 'visibly Muslim' people on a regular basis in the UK.

EncoreMoi · 09/03/2024 16:19

Meanwhile "defend...the heroic Houthis" is fine and dandy.

A Swastika inside a Jewish symbol? No problem at all.

You are probably right there.

The police definitely have questions to answer about this.

quantumbutterfly · 09/03/2024 16:28

Wonder if this will be front page news. The loonies shouting agent provocateur at him, so clueless.

The same questions get asked time and time again, sadly. I hope that he's ok. He's a brave man.

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2024 16:36

It shouldn't be brave to hold a sign saying 'Hamas are terrorists' on the streets of London. This is just madness.

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2024 16:40

He turns up, he gets attacked. It keeps happening. The police should bloody be protecting him.

Scirocco · 09/03/2024 16:43

It shouldn't be. Because Hamas are a proscribed terrorist organisation. And because he should be allowed to hold a sign saying whatever he wants so long as it isn't breaking any law.

If people are offended by the actions of members of the public, protesters or counter-protesters, then they should report it to the police and not take it into their own hands to react with aggression.

SomeCatFromJapan · 09/03/2024 18:48

He's low hanging fruit, isn't he? Far easier to arrest a solitary peaceful protester who is being attacked, than the large mob who is doing the attacking.

And this is what matters.

Mob rule should not be stronger than the rule of law, because that's when trouble starts and people get hurt.

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2024 19:57

He has tweeted a long video of himself at the march. You can see he is just stood there with his sign. Then a group of women start shouting "shame on you" at him, before someone tries to take his sign, then he is attacked by a couple of men.

https://x.com/ghorbaniiniyak/status/1766535150265905316?s=61&t=U9XrcF693-JpMxeIueYG7g

The police managed to get there pretty quickly so they really should have done a better job of gauging the temperature of what was going on. Although in previous videos where he has been attacked the police have also bundled him away. As Cat says, easier to tackle him than the mob.

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2024 19:58

Why would protestors on a peace march be shouting "shame on you" at someone holding a sign against Hamas?

EncoreMoi · 09/03/2024 21:07

And why would one of the police take the (entirely lawful) sign, crumple it up and march off with it in disgust to remove it from the scene of the 'crime', as if it it was a swastika or something

If protestors are genuinely marching for a ceasefire, a placard stating Hamas are terrorists shouldn't be contentious by any stretch of the imagination. Absolutely wild that folk were shouting "shame on you" at him and that his presence is framed as a counter-protest.

And if protestors want peace, what's with the cries for intifada and 'Zionist scum get off our streets'? I'm assuming that includes me, a left wing Jew that's strongly pro-ceasefire but also identifies as zionist. Where do they want me to go to after I've removed myself from their streets? Surely not Israel, because that would be ironic to say the least.

CatsKnowTheAnswer · 09/03/2024 21:20

This is all so so wrong. I remember when these protests first started people asked the question if protesters were condemning hamas alongside their calls for a ceasefire, and were told that yes, such placards would be welcomed. Well, here's the evidence that this very much isn't the case.

PeasfullPerson · 09/03/2024 21:26

I think the way this guy tries to get his message across is insulting and ineffectual. If you go to a protest about the plight of Palestinians, show no empathy for them, and basically hold a sign that amounts to ‘But Hamas’, people aren’t going to be happy. But that doesn’t matter, this is meant to be a democracy, he should be allowed to hold his sign and stand at the side of the protest without being assaulted, and he should be treated fairly by the police.

noblegiraffe · 09/03/2024 21:30

It depends on what you think his message is. If his message is that some people on that march actually support Hamas and that the police are doing a poor job of policing them, then he has done a bloody good job of getting that message across today.

Who is he insulting by holding up a sign that says Hamas are terrorists?
