Great speech in the Irish Parliament. Puts the UK government to shame.

He can be a bit unhinged sometimes but definitely passionate. Representatives from smaller fringe parties and independents get into government due to proportional representation and their voices are often much needed and a welcome change from members having to comply with their party whip. I think the UK loses out on these characters of dissent with its first past the post system

@EasterIssland @ConnieCounter I've just seen this on X. Israeli soldiers took a Palestinian hostage, used him to evacuate the hospital then executed him. What is moral about this?

Been thinking the same since I saw the pic of some psychopath (because I can’t define them as someone defending civilians) with a woman’s night clothes. They see women as trophies

No idea what that picture is meant to be.

All twitter links loading for me. I assume where the links won't load that it's due to the account trying to access it being on a block list.

"These words are worth reading.

They are from 102 years old philosopher Edgar Morin, one of France's most revered intellectual figures, as well as a Jewish WW2 resistant who fought as a lieutenant in De Gaulle's France combattante.

"I am both astonished and outraged by the fact that those who represent the descendants of a people who were persecuted for centuries for religious or racial reasons... who are today the decision-makers of the State of Israel, could not only colonize an entire people, partly drive them out of their land and seek to expel them for good... But also, after the massacre of October 7, engaged in a real massive slaughter on the populations of Gaza and continue, incessantly, hitting civilians, women, and children.

And to see the silence of the world, the silence of the United States, protectors of Israel, the silence of the Arab states, the silence of the European states who claim to be defenders of culture, humanity, human rights.

I think we are living through a horrible tragedy because we are also powerless in the face of this thing that is unleashing. At least, I say: bear witness! The only thing that remains if we cannot resist concretely is to testify. Let's resist in our minds, let's not be fooled, let's not forget, let's have the courage to face things head-on.""

Thank you for this link.
He is expressing so clearly what I have been thinking and feeling.
As a French citizen, I have nothing but admiration for the men, women and children who put themselves at huge risks to help liberate my country.
Let's bear witness!

It’s so blatant. Yet still no one is calling them out and saying that’s it, no more weapons.

Very important point - Gaza is not an open prison, the people there are afforded none of the rights of prisoners.

@Finallyloggedin
This is so interesting. Never thought of it that way but she’s right.
Again, I remain baffled by how Israel can behave like this in full view of everyone with no one seemingly able to step in and stop it. The billions

ConnieCounter · 16/02/2024 15:58

The Palestinian ambassador to the UK, Husam Zomlot, said that eight of his relatives who were sheltering in the southern Gaza town of Rafah were killed in an Israeli strike. Zomlot also identified a girl in a distressing photo that has been widely shared online as his wife’s seven-year-old cousin Sidra Hassouna.

The picture of that child will haunt me. It's beyond words. Poor little girl.

@ConnieCounter yes I totally agree, i don’t think I will ever forget it. Poor little girl.

@EasterIssland so heartbreaking that Egypt seem to be agreeing to the next part of their plan. It’s just all so terrible, isn’t it?

I still don’t think the full extent of what is going on is widely known in the UK. So many people I speak to don’t seem aware of just how horrific things are. The efforts to divert attention sadly seem to work.

inkworks273 · 17/02/2024 07:21

@Finallyloggedin Yes so many people don't know the full extent of what's going on. If people aren't on instagram, twitter, TikTok etc. and only get their news from the msm then they are only getting a sanitised version of events. Which is by design I suppose.

I’m not sure whether it’s that Egypt agrees or whether they know Israel will do what they want and this might impact them so they’re trying to prepare for it

@Snowypeak yes, totally agree with you.

@inkworks273 yes, you are right, I once saw a quote something like “if the Tory government are the bank robbers, the msm are the getaway drivers”.

I never thought they would stoop so low as to hide a genocide but they seem to be doing their best to collectively make us look the other way. With a few honourable exceptions.

Who is 'they'??

And as for 'hiding a genocide', that's ridiculous.

How can you 'hide a genocide'?

We are told that there are bodies piled up on the streets in Gaza, people being buried in mass graves and yet we have satellites that can pick out a cigarette packet on a pavement, so it seems rather implausible.

Kindatired · 17/02/2024 10:33

Eye witness account from a 19yo now in Dublin“There was so much rubbish in the streets and we saw bodies too. Sometimes you couldn’t tell the difference between rubbish and bodies.”
Reliable journalistic sources are not querying the scale of the casualties nor are Israel’s firm ally , the US.

There's plenty of photos of mass graves. Do you dispute the death toll in Gaza?

Yes I do, when it comes from Hamas.
