There is no derailing here. The thread focuses on the marches.

My point is that it suits Israel’s narrative to demonise the marches.

Anyone who believes that the only purpose of the march is to intimidate Jews, may be suffering from paranoia due to consuming too much propaganda, or deviously pushing it themselves.

Limeandsodaontherocks · 21/02/2024 19:09

I have never thought the sole purpose of the March is to intimidate Jews. I appreciate that the title is provocative.
I have only ever looked to find some assurance that the March will allow space for people who want to condemn Hamas and sympathise with the plight of hostages ( as well as condemn the Israeli government and the plight of Palestinians)
I did appreciate the comments from Scirroco ( who I totally respect) . I also think Parkingttt ? ( not sure I’ve got the name right) has given me food for thought and shifted my perspective.
In contrast- some posters have adopted a tone that suggests contempt for those who question them. It’s important to start from a position that (as far as we know - ) none of us are evil / some of us know more about one community than the other/ some of us know very little but are good people in their everyday life and don’t make judgments about others according to their religion or race .

You are aware that we have laws outlawing the stirring up of racial hatred and disorder?

Honestly, the ever changing fluid reasons folk come up with for banning the marches/public protest never ceases to amaze me.
Transport
Remembrance sunday.

bkla bla bla

easter?
New moon?
Anniversary of whatever (a quick google will find many)

I am aware thank you. I also have an opinion which I believe I'm entitled to if that's ok with you.

Limeandsodaontherocks · 21/02/2024 19:49

Bernie Sanders very strong on channel 4 just now. Our focus needs to be on the starving children in Gaza. ( But let’s not forget that Hamas bear responsibility for their suffering and for the suffering of the hostages who aren’t any more guilty than than the children of Palestine)
(Edited for spelling)

stomachamelon · 21/02/2024 20:04

@Limeandsodaontherocks I thought that was a very good interview.

PeasfullPerson · 21/02/2024 20:45

@Limeandsodaontherocks And have you ever questioned the provocative thread title? Or are you happy to leave a statement that slanders a whole group of people unchallenged when it suits your needs?

”When it suits my needs”? … I’d like to respond with a childish emoji but I’ll assume you mean well . Im Irish - I have no axe to grind in this debate.
Yes the thread title is one that invites debate…. No I haven’t questioned it because i didn’t need to - I think it’s quite hard to speak up for the Israeli people ( I speak from experience as every time I’ve tried I’ve been been attacked ) I’ve lived with Palestinians in Rafah for 2 months in the 1980s and it was an amazing experience for me as a young person. I then spent 2 months in a kibbutz. I have immensely fond memories of all the people I met - and the photos which I treasure and wonder were they are now.

stomachamelon · 21/02/2024 21:20

@PeasfullPerson let it go!
This is about the fourth time you have bitched about the thread title.
It was altered (by Mumsnet) at your bequest. If it continues to bother you that much don't engage.
It's not compulsory.
Can't wait for part three :)

noblegiraffe · 21/02/2024 21:31

I reckon Israel made you do that thread title.

“literal denial (it never happened); interpretative denial (it’s not what you think it is) and implicatory denial (we have to do it/it’s terrible, but it’s not our fault).”

Isn't that exactly what Hamas (and many pro Palestinian/anti-Israeli activists ) do?

"Civilians were not targeted/The murders rapes etc never happened/Israel killed everyone at the festival with helicopter gunfire"

"People were murdered but they weren't raped"

"They were murdered and raped but it's all their own fault because we're occupied"

PeasfullPerson · 21/02/2024 22:03

@stomachameleon

I appreciate you took time to consider the title, but it is still inflammatory and invites people to disagree with it. Still, I believe in free speech so I won’t try and force the thread to be shut down. I will however make sure that I am on here to point this out every time you get annoyed with people who unsurprisingly feel upset by the demonisation of these marches.

I am hoping Palestinian civilians stop getting killed, that the hostages are returned home, and that the hate this war is fuelling diminishes, along with antisemitism and Islamophobia.

But sure, you look forward to part 3.

Thanks

' Still, I believe in free speech so I won’t try and force the thread to be shut down.'

How benevolent of you! And slightly contradictory.

I never get annoyed..... :)

@etmoiandme yes grow up with your abbreviations.

Do you think this is a completely black/ white issue? Do you think Israel is the 💯 bad guy the way Nazi Germany / Hitler was ? Or do you think it’s a bit more complicated?

I read this and get the impression that you are someone who is genuine and wants the “right side” to win. Unfortunately “ the right side” is definitely not Hamas or Netanyahu’s government so there is no black and white here. ( It was so much easier to discern the morally correct side when it was the Nazi Germany which is why everyone tries to use that terrible episode as their reference)

Aah - but FFS is an expression of exasperation. I think it’s an acceptable way of expressing frustration and not normally offensive …( unless you’re one of my elderly aunts)

noblegiraffe · 21/02/2024 23:41

I always find that people get prissy about swearing as a last resort.

Completely disagree.

FFS grow up!”

I find people swear out of exasperation that anyone could put forward an opposing view and to intimidate and shut down disagreement/ debate.

When they are called out for their bad language- they continue with their intimidating behaviour- as in this case.

Calling people loons and useful idiots as well as other choice words because you don’t agree with their actions on these marches doesn’t really provide much depth to the debate either.
