South Africa has invoked the Genocide Convention against Israel over Gaza

The entire filing is 84 pages long and, frankly, took me several hours to read - it's well worth the effort, though, in that it is rather (painfully at times) clinical and devastating in equal measure: https://www.icj-cij.org/sites/default/files/case-related/192/192-20231228-app-01-00-en.pdf

Go, South Africa!

It might not male that much of a difference in the short term - but: to see the former victims of Apartheid take the lead on the world stage, and offer support (the way they - after multiple decades of campaigning and pressure ... it's not as though world leaders hated Apartheid South Africa "by default") is just ... a little spark of light within the darkness!

Honestly every day I am horrified at the the double standards and lack of critical thought
Israel told Gazans to evacuate the North or be killed. I don't think they've yet been told its safe to return. So who are you thinking will bury the dead?

All Palestinians have been refused re-entry to northern gaza by IDF for many weeks and shot and attacked by gun-boats when they have tried [as above]

Pinkpetunias88 · 13/01/2024 10:37

@AdamRyan "Do you therefore agree with Owen Jones that there is no proof the rapes of women by Hamas happened?"

I'll treat that as a genuine question.

As you are aware the proof was contained on the body-cams of the deceased terrorists.

"Several incidents of sexual assault and rape from 7 October have been documented by Hamas body camera footage, CCTV,

I wouldn't describe questioning SAs motives as an attempt to discredit if they've not been accused of anything that isn't true.

The South Africans have just reiterated that they don't view Hamas as a terrorist organisation.

Apparently it's because Hamas don't carry out terrorist attacks on South African soil.
So that's okay then.

Edited

I see it as an attempt to discredit them. SA representative's have condemned 7th October.

Spotlight back where it belongs… on the Israeli government, for their ongoing killing, maiming and starvation of innocent civilians in Gaza. For taking away their access to basic healthcare and internally displacing 85% of the population. For publicly making comments that dehumanise the population of Gaza and demonstrate genocidal intent.

While this is ongoing, it should be the main concern.

Didn't come out until after Jones (shockingly imo) said there was no evidence it had happened.

Humane people don't demand evidence women have been raped. I also think it's quite ridiculous to demand evidence that there are unburied bodies and people starving in a city that's suffered intense bombing, has no way in or out and has very restricted aid. It's just blindingly obvious what will be happening.

EasterIssland · 13/01/2024 10:48

Quick search on twitter bodies Gaza shows few videos from death bodies on the streets. You can say this are fake , they’re not Gaza etc. but I’ll say with all the content that can be seen nowadays (like SA said it’s the first genocide where the victims are filming and showing it to the world) I can believe that those from UN that went to north Gaza are reporting what they saw and not make up things.

and as other poster has said I’d not request to any Hamas rape victim to show me proof. I don’t neither believe proof to understand that there are bodies piling up in Gaza at the moment

Healthcare workers have been killed, injured, arrested, detained, and driven out of northern gaza by the IDF. There are just a handful of PRCS paramedics left there

So who does this vital work now?

The Red Crescent that Israel are bombing? Yes of course they'll be in a position to go into the North to bury the dead

So what happens when the IDF stops photographic evidence being recorded by UN?

But in this case the UN was not denied access was it ? A photo was published with the article but it was from from South Gaza.

It's pointless trying to discuss hypothetical situations

I'm sorry but none of this makes sense. Few videos, or a few? You do or don't need proof? You need to write with more clarity if you want your points to be understood.

OK. So the main tactic now is to discredit the United Nations.

Anyone who calls out Israel's inhumane actions gets this treatment. Countries, charities, human rights organisations, individuals etc.

I repeat - according to Al Jezeera the IDF have not been bombing in North Gaza for 6 days.

Your article is about Khan Yunis which is in South Gaza.

My question to you wasn't about access

It was about IDF banning photography in northern gaza [see above]

Not a 'hypothetical situation'

QueenRania · 13/01/2024 11:07

I wouldn't even bother to entertain this poster. The UN is a credible organisation and I think it becomes farcical when we try to argue that what they are saying in their reports is not true.
To what end? Why would they make this up? The whole situation is dire and I don't think there is any need to make stories up when there is ample documentation from numerous sources with regards to what is happening is Gaza.
@Pinkpetunias88 do you the believe the UN is lying? What makes you think that?

No I don’t need evidence. There is a poster requesting evidence or they won’t trust it.

Even graveyards have not been spared with accounts of desecration, stolen bodies and organs.

Are you suggesting that Israel is harvesting corpses and organs?

Desecration of graveyards - reported and verified

'Stealing' bodies - reported and verified

Harvesting organs - no evidence I've seen

QueenRania · 13/01/2024 11:27

Organs harvested - There are reports online but mainly from middle east outlets.

'In the early 2000s, the Israeli army said that the practice of organ harvesting from Palestinians had ended more than a decade ago and it did not happen anymore.

However, just recently, around 80 bodies of Palestinians killed by the Israeli army returned to the Gaza Strip, had been ‘mutilated’ with Israelis accused of removing ‘vital organs from them’'
