BBC caught lying again'over resignation of Harvard's Claudine Gay

The BBC today published an article about her resignation, with the headline: “Harvard’s Claudine Gay a casualty of campus culture wars.”

Claudine Gay has quit the plagiarism allegations after she appeared before Congress to discuss antisemitism on college campuses. She didn't quit because of her shocking attitude to Jewish students getting abused or any culture war. Her academic work is currently under scrutiny and she quit before a conclusion of that comes out

Its was more a targetted campaign to oust her.

I have read about this bloke before about this an before and he has been campaigning for a long time. So the Genocide stuff may have given him more evidence and support for his campaign. However once we hear the full findings from the people looking into her academic work we will see what the truth is. Did she resign because of his campaign or was it because she has been rumbled for plagiarism. Currently the evidence suggests the latter because overwise academics would not be saying there is evidence of this in the first place

I suppose we could say she was being checked for plagiarism because of the spotlight on her at the moment. However that isn't a culture war and will happen to anyone in academia or a wrter with that much publicity

Plus if this is about her not stopping prejudice against Jewish children on campus then why is that being called a culture war. They should have said it was racism on campus or a culture of racism

Plus in what way is the dreadful human being a casualty. The BBC are making it sound like she is a victim. The woman said that calling for the Genocide of Jewish people was only prejudice depending on context. That does not make her a victim of anything going on at the university. It makes her guilty as fuck of letting racism fester amongst students. She had a duty of care to 18 year old kids that were likely experiencing their first time away from home. She is not a casualty in all this.

Thereissomelight · 04/01/2024 10:24

Well Bill Ackman sounds like a charmer.

queenofarles · 04/01/2024 11:41

On thing for sure , if Claudine was white and pro The latest Israeli Campaign people wouldn’t have gone through her work with a fine tooth comb. The allegations are over a year old and have been reviewed.

trucks have been stationed in front of her house with messages like Claudine is Hamas best friend , Claudine needs to resign for days.

That is not OK about the trucks or anyones home getting targeted. There are some vile people out there

Sorry but the colour of her skin is not why this claim about plagiarism has been raised again and there is more looking into her work happening. It is because she thinks people calling for the Genocide of Jews is only wrong depending on context. Then said this when the question was asked to her. This was filmed and shown around the world. If that happened to a white person they would be treated exactly the same as she has been. In fact the two other women were white were they not and they have been publicly and personally attacked too.

She had full support of Havard board plus others and no intention to resign until she learnt her work was being looked at again by experts. She resigned most likely because she was worried about what is going to come out of more scrutiny. So lets just wait and see what happens there and if that is correct.

However saying all that the fact remains she is not a casualty of a culture war. She is not a victim in all this. The students she was supposed to be looking after are the victims in this story.

Not saying harrasing her is okay but thinking she's sympathetic to hamas isn't a huge stretch, given shesaid calling for the genocide of Jewish people is okay in certain contexts.

Yes, he defended Elon Musk for liking an anti-Semitic tweet. As did you.

Thereissomelight · 04/01/2024 12:38

@Girahim
He is Jewish.

EmberLight · 04/01/2024 12:43

I didn't watch the hearings but I saw clips of them and it seemed extremely fucked up from what I saw. But as I say I only saw snippets.

Can anyone clarify whether in the hearings calls for genocide of Jews means statements like "I would like to kill all Jews" or something equally overtly genocidal or did it mean people chanting "from the river to the sea" etc on campus marches?

@Girahim
He is Jewish.

And?

ItsRainingTacos79 · 04/01/2024 12:58

According to some articles Elise Stefanik conflated the word 'intifada' (which means uprising) with the word 'genocide' when questioning the university presidents but this is cut out of the the video snippets shared on social media, which makes it look like the 3 presidents are responding to a question about calls for genocide against Jewish students on campus 🤷🏽‍♀️

Also, the work of the authors who Dr Gay is reported to plagiarise have, according to the article below, have themselves stated that they consider these to be minor citation issues.

@TriOptimim thank you that's very helpful. I'll read it later when I have some time.

queenofarles · 04/01/2024 13:02

Her skin Colour is a big part of the issue , people like Bill Ackman were vocal against Harvard’s DEI policies ,
when asked about the use of word intifada , Gay said she personally finds it hateful and abhorring.
and went on about free speech etc etc.

She was repeatedly asked whether calling for genocide broke the code of conduct and refused to answer. She didn't say "yes, although I don't consider calling for an intifada to be genocide". She said calling for genocide is okay in some contexts.

As I said before

Sorry but the colour of her skin is not why this claim about plagiarism has been raised again

Everyone would be looking at her work and past behaviour or comments at this time, after what she said no matter what her skin colour

Whether a campaign has been against her in the past is irrelevant. Her whole life and work would be under scrutiny after what she said

Trulywonderful · 04/01/2024 13:31

The two other women that wouldn't say the call for genocide on campus was against their bulling policies etc have also been under scrutiny. This started after the recording of their answers was aired with the PENN university head getting serious scrutiny first and personal attack. She resigned because of this.

The Havard lady just chose not to do the right thing and resign. Therefore everything from her past was and is being looked at by journalists and academics. Nothing to do with why allegations have been made against her in the past or her skin colour.

What she is dealing with is the world being appalled she said what I assumed lawyers told her to say if she got a question that could put the university at risk of being sued. However I cannot know this for sure and she chose to say it was about context. She could have not followed lawyers advice or stood up and threatened to resign if denial about antisemitism on campus was talked about in meetings before. However she put her job/career over her responsibility to student. Else she like I said before thinks like this herself. Either way she behave terribly and people will not let that lie.

Trulywonderful · 04/01/2024 13:35

The third lady will no doubt be under even more scuntiny now

stomachameleon · 04/01/2024 14:21

@Girahim in plain sight.

Ridiculous. Girahim said that Bill Ackman supported Elon Musk’s antisemitic statements. While I don’t care whether he did or not, I’m not sure of the relevance of saying he supports antisemitic statements as he himself is Jewish.

Thereissomelight · 04/01/2024 14:58

I won’t be engaging further with this particular meaningless blind alley.

You said, I'm assuming sarcastically, that Bull Ackman sounds like a charmer. I agreed that he sounds unpleasant as he defended Elon Musks piking of an anti-semitic comment, which you also did. Started a whole thread about it in fact. You then stated - for some reason - that he's Jewish.
