With respect, if most Jewish people are offended by that phrase, I think the decent thing is to believe them and not use it. Not to decide for yourself that it's not offensive really.

Edited for a typo

Yet I’ve seen that used by Jewish people with the Israeli flag covering the whole area, that offended me, but that’s ok is it cos I’m not Jewish ?

Out of interest and balance, @Livinginanotherworld why did you ask if any Jews had actually been physically attacked and then ignore the responses showing that they had, in favour of posting about something bad some Jews said?

I don't think that everyone who attends these marches go on them to intimidate the Jewish community or to spread hatred. It is still our legal right to protest.
If the EDL members are allowed to march ( I find their beliefs outrageous) so pro Palestine ones should be too.

EDL do not March every weekend in central London, intimidating Jewish people.

And if they did the police would shut them down asap.

But you think it’s fine for thousands of people to chant vile anti Semitic slogans ‘from the river to the sea’, with some of them making horrific references to the holocaust.

Perhaps not all pro Palestinian marchers are racist anti semites but all anti semites are fanatically frothing at the bit pro Palestine.

Here's a story from two hours ago so no one will have been 'found guilty' yet

Then of course, it’s dreadful that someone has been attacked for being Jewish. I fully agree.
I was just wondering if these are isolated attacks in the same way people are being attacked due to Islamophobia, or homophobic attacks. Sadly there are sick people around everywhere.

I’m working my way through the thread replying as I go, nothing sinister to see here.

It's from the daily mail, says it all.
The marches are a legitimate expression of freedom of speech. I don't agree with some protests but should they be banned, no. Minority carrying offensive posters will be identified, not sure why there is yet another thread on this. Yawn.

I guess you don’t have a problem with Jewish people being intimidated by thousands of anti semites every Saturday, but hey, blame the Daily Mail for exposing your anti Semitism.

Scirocco · 28/12/2023 19:34

@Livinginanotherworld not all Islamophobia is isolated or independent from world events. I've experienced verbal abuse, threats, attempts to intimidate me and today someone spat at my child, with perpetrators directly linking their actions with the current events in Israel and Gaza.

@GreekDogRescue not all people with antisemitic views are pro-Palestine - some people are both antisemitic and Islamophobic or just plain hate everyone who isn't exactly like them.

Wouldn't open the DM link, but I attend marches, a Jewish lady leads ours, I have zero interest in intimidating any Jews. The assertion that this is done purely to intimidate Jews is offensive to me. I am capable of having such deep concern about the ongoing Palestinian civilian deaths without it being an attack on Jews.
I know Christians who think Pride in our city is an attack on them, not everything is about you dear.

And yet you are not marching against genocide elsewhere in the world and not a word about the genocide of millions of Uyghur Muslims in China.
You don’t think you are being anti semitic holding Israel to standards that you ignore elsewhere in the world?

You do realise just how meaningless that image is and just how meaningless it is if done with the Palestinian flag too don't you. I assume yes.

What is not meaningless is if these images are used on protests thar are supposed to be about a ceasefire or peace. That is because they represent a different agenda. If you also think of the chant from the river to the sea in this way, like so many people do, you can then see the issue with the chant and how it represents something very genocidal to so many people. The same as if pro Israel protests were to use it in a protest.

stormy4319trevor · 28/12/2023 19:36

@Scirocco I'm so sorry. What an awful thing to happen to your child.

I don’t know any anti semites so I will have to take your word on that.

@Scirocco
Very sorry to hear that. I hate to think of what might have been said.

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 19:40

@Scirocco that's terrible. How did you know it was linked? I hope you reported it?

Livinginanotherworld · 28/12/2023 19:40

@Scirocco thanks for pointing that out. I’m sorry you and your child had to experience that. It’s not acceptable.

stormy4319trevor · 28/12/2023 19:40

@GreekDogRescue There are some really far right groups who would be anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim, as well as generally racist and into white supremacy. I think Louis Theroux met some of them in a documentary, as did Reggie Yates,

Scirocco · 28/12/2023 19:43

@Trulywonderful the image may be meaningless to you, but that doesn't mean it's meaningless to everyone. Personally, when I look at that, which clearly expresses the idea of destroying what little remains of Palestine, I feel a combination of sadness for the people whose homes and country would be destroyed, grief for my friend who died there trying to protect just one home for one family, and worry that my child lives in a world in which lives like theirs aren't valued.

I was just wondering if these are isolated attacks in the same way people are being attacked due to Islamophobia, or homophobic attacks. Sadly there are sick people around everywhere.

There has been a rise in antisemitism since the pogrom, the anti Jew properganda online lately and the marches. The statistics the police and the CST are say clearly show this. Also the met police set up a special webpage just to show people they want to track down from protests and marches in order for the general public to assist them. Plus have also made arrests at protests that for hate crime offences that would not have happened if no protest or pogrom or conflict. So yes there is provably a connection between protests and incidents. I mean a lot of the graffiti says stuff like free Palestine, including the graffiti on a school for blind children.

@Scirocco It looks like that to me too.

Lives like your child’s most definitely matter to many. They matter to all those worldwide marchers for starters.

I certainly didn’t find it meaningless, I found it highly offensive and was shocked that I knew the person that posted it. Please don’t minimise it because it came from a Jewish person. (NB not an Israeli, a British Jewish man.). It’s not ok either way.

Normally the EDL are both. However apparently more recently they decided to try and beat up Muslims or people that they see as foreigers by pretending to be Jew friendly. However Jewish leaders in the UK are not stupid and told them to sod off /we don'twant your help, banned them from antisemitism march etc

stomachamaleon · 28/12/2023 19:40

@Scirocco that's terrible. How did you know it was linked? I hope you reported it?

I know it was linked because people told me.

When someone comes up, does that sort of thing and states that it's because they're Jewish or because they have Jewish friends and they're standing up for Israel, I'm pretty sure it's linked to the current events. When a man tells me to take myself and my child off to Gaza and get bombed, because I deserve it because of what's happened to "his people", I'm pretty sure it's linked.

There's no point in reporting these things to the authorities. It's not taken seriously and nothing would actually come of reporting it.

noblegiraffe · 28/12/2023 19:51

You are fretting about a tiny minority of people when literally thousands of racists are taking to the capital every Saturday with anti Semitic chants but this is somehow OK.
