Horrors of violence towards women on October the 7th suppressed

It looks like the UN may have been reluctant to investigate or highlight the sickening sexual violence committed on October 7th. It also appears some of the hostages may have been abused.

Was this because the horrendous violence doesn't fit in with that purely Palestinians are victims of this ongoing conflict? Are investigations into these crimes because women are viewed as second class citizens or the revelations 'muddy the waters' where some just want to see one side as the victim.

Why should victims be violated further, their suffering weighed in the balance so someone like you, @stormy4319trevor , can graciously deem that yes, they have been raped? Or perhaps that they haven’t, despite the avalanche of evidence - physical, eyewitness, circumstancial - because you haven’t seen a film of it actually happening?

Nobody has downplayed rape here except those who, for reasons of their own, downplay and justify what happened on 7 Oct. Rape can never, ever be justified. we should talk about the fact that it is used as a weapon, and we should talk about the fact that it was used on 7 October very deliberately and callously by Hamas as part of their terror attack.

I’m not really seeing why that remark was necessary. She never said she didn’t believe it happened.

It's not up to me to deem anything - that's for legal experts. But if you believe we should believe women when they say they have been raped, I hope you apply that to all women,

SomeCatFromJapan · 05/12/2023 20:03

Even if you don't trust the Israeli government, by suggesting that third-party witnesses are required you are casting doubt on the credibility of rescue workers, doctors, police, pathologists and the survivors of the attack.

Basically, no Israeli is trustworthy? They're all part of a massive conspiracy?

Just look at the BBC link someone posted a few minutes ago. They've apparently seen the evidence now too. So go ahead and spread it to your social circle.

I've also attached a screenshot from Reuters as you need to be signed up to read their articles so not sure a link would've worked for everyone. The last sentence says they couldn't verify all the accounts, but that means they were able to verify some.

@Humdingerydoo no no, those first responders are just liars in cahoots with the Israeli government and not to be trusted. Pictures or it didn't happen!

Depdawg · 05/12/2023 20:07

I think it's time to stop playing these posters' game.

Sussurations · 05/12/2023 20:08

You’re probably right, Depadawg.

When soldiers and press discover absolutely unequivocal evidence of atrocities the world accepts it. October the 7th is the same. We do not need UN investigation in reality when the evidence is overwhelming. We have many holocaust memorials and in future there will be October the 7th memorials in Israel.

Please can we not question overwhelming evidence in my eyes as the consequences of turning a blind eye to the suffering of Jews has horrible historical parallels.

The women were violated the question is why this was not made widely known earlier and why has the UN response from the appropriate agencies been so muted.

I think the point she’s trying to make is that allegations of abuse (including sexual abuse) by the IDF towards detainees should be investigated as well and not dismissed out of hand.

mids2019 · 05/12/2023 20:10

@Depdawg

the responses are all so depressing.....especially on a website dedicated to women and their gender specific issues.

No-one disagrees, I'm sure. It's for another thread though.

Yes, it's really grim.
Well done for this thread.
We should continue to update with news.
That's what's important.

mids2019 · 05/12/2023 20:16

I hope the media do continue with this story from as it is as if is a dark chapter in Israeli history. This thread is has a lot of posters that would probably argue the holocaust shouldn't be highlighted to new generations as there have always been genocides and why pick one over the other?

Eight weeks of silence later, the United Nations has launched its own investigation into the sexual violence Hamas is accused of.

Let us hope the results of that are enough to convince those who wish to wait for the third-party verification.

mids2019 · 05/12/2023 20:19

@SomeCatFromJapan

good but it will be an investigation into specifics and scope, not whether the events took place. If that was the case it would be a bit like the U.N.launching an investigation to verify planes had been flown into the two towers or not on 9/11.

Reading some of the reports of the brutal rapes, it is pathetic that Hamas "vehemently deny" the accusations.
I wouldn't trust that shower as far as I could throw them.
They've shown us what they are.

Depdawg · 05/12/2023 20:25

Did I read that somebody posted Hilary Clinton had picked up on the silence of the rapes?
We need a figurehead to run with this.
