Conflict in the Middle East

Are any Palestinians calling for hostage release / Hamas to stop fighting?

This question is not about whether they should or should not be. But if we are hearing all Palestinian voices - it’s so hard to tell from the media. I imagine there must be people who just want it all to stop and don’t think keeping the hostages is in ordinary Gazan’s interests, or who do not support their government but I haven’t heard any - it may well be that I’ve just missed it, but is it something that’s being under reported?

probably because their relatives were kidnapped by israelis years ago and have been imprisoned without release since!

But what this got to do with condemnation of Hamas? or are you saying they are supportive of Hamas' main goal of the elimination of the state of Israel? And we now know their methods - as shown on the 7th October - so how this stance (kill them all in retaliation) is any different to what Israel is doing now?..

Basically you re saying - Israel kidnapped Palestinians - Hamas was right to retaliate in a horrid barbaric way; so I assume, according to your logic, Hamas kidnapped Israelis - Israel has a right to retaliate, too?..

kitsuneghost · 13/11/2023 21:23

When I listen to the news the Palestinians they have on all seem to support Hamas.

However if you are anti Hamas you may be scared to come forward.

"Victim mentality"? Whoever fails to condemn Hamas are definitely against Palestinian people because Hamas does not care about Palestinians dying, in fact, they welcome their death. They would not even allow women and children to hide in the tunnels or use any of the food and other supplies they have accumulated. Its a totalitarian death cult bent on achieving its disguising goal of elimination of Israel, and Israel, surprisingly, doesn't want to be eliminated. You can do as much swearing and posturing as you like but if Hamas laid down arms and released hostages all of this nightmare would be over. And if Hamas did not attack Israel none of this would have happened in the first place, and Gaza would have been a seaside town it was a few month before, and not a pile of ruins it is now.

It is clear to see - Israel is trying to eradicate Palestine.

Stop crying about Israel.

It exists. It has billions funded by US/UK. I don’t think there is a fear that Israel will be wiped out.

Israel is WIPING OUT PALESTINE.

Don’t twist the reality.

White supremency is at the heart of this.

The ruling majority of Israel trace their ancestory to Eastern Europe , not the Middle East.

This is both racist and inaccurate. Jews cannot be ‘white supremacists’ no matter where they come from. They are a distinct ethnic group and are not Caucasian. In addition, huge numbers of Israelis, perhaps a majority, are of middle-eastern origin.

It’s very interesting that the Jews are the only ethnic group in the world who are not allowed a homeland. That’s racism.

localnotail · 13/11/2023 21:30

Hamas is a ruling party in Gaza, they control state media, education, healthcare etc. they have been brainwashing Palestinians since 2006, so no wonder they all "support" it. Not different to any dictatorship anywhere else. What I find hard to accept is there seem to be a lot of educated, intelligent Palestinians living in the west who seem to be very reluctant to condemn Hamas openly. Who never said anything about horrendous stuff that happened on 7th October - Before the current tragedy unfolded in Gaza. I don't know what the reason behind is, but its very sad and disappointing, to say the least.

You are very dramatic and seem to speak in slogans only. I sincerely hope Israel will not be wiped out, and believe me, Palestine will be there, too - but maybe smaller. You just need to remember that this happened every time Israel got attacked, so maybe Arab countries should try to negotiate and live in peace rather than attack and deny Israel's existence.

Agree, there is a lot of moral equivocation. Where was the condemnation even before October 7th? People are now saying ‘Hamas don’t represent Palestinians, there haven’t been elections since 2005’. Why was no one saying this before? It feels very much like many Palestinian supporters do in fact support Hamas.

I think the Palestinian people here in the west or in Palestine are either too scared to speak up against Hamas, or they have relatives or know members who associate themselves with Hamas. Aren’t Hamas members mainly all orphaned children? I watched a documentary on it a while ago.
they are all children who have grown up into angry young men when Israel murdered their parents, families and destroyed their homes? Some of the children who survive this current war will grow up wanting revenge. If they don’t get justice from the world whilst atrocities and illegal war crimes are being committed what else can they do?
imagine you have a sister/brother and they get killed in front of your nephews/nieces. The niece/nephew grows up and joins Hamas because they want to hurt those that hurt him. Would you speak bad or condemn your niece or nephew?

jolaylasofia · 13/11/2023 21:44

Yes - I’m the dramatic one 🙄

Your words “Palestine will be there too - but maybe smaller.”

Had I said - Israel will be smaller - I’m sure I would be called anti-Semitic.

If I was living in a country under constant bombardment from my neighbours so I had to have a safe room in my house,
under the threat of suicide bombers in cafes and on buses so I did not know if I could trust the person next to me in the street,
with neighbours who's avowed aim was to obliterate me and my country and they had just perpetrated the most barbaric up close and personal atrocity on 1400 of my neighbours..
I might not have time to worry about people on keyboards on the other side of the world.

And yet there are people on both sides of the border trying to achieve a kind of peace, I pray that they win against the monsters. Target your anger at Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran and the numerous jihadi groups in that region. Send your support to the groups on the ground in the region ( many of whom were targeted on Oct 7th) trying to broker peace.

What a shockingly ignorant and one-sided view.
ever wondered why your neighbours feel the need to behave in that way?
you think Israeli domestic policy consists of cuddles and friendliness and freedom to Palestinian people to have livelihoods, jobs, businesses, free passage in a land that is their own? Happy citizens don’t become terrorists. People who have been oppressed and brutalised and raped and killed by their oppressors eventually want to fight back.
go educate yourself, you clearly know nothing about the long and difficult history of this conflict.

‘Go educate yourself’ is very unhelpful. It’s much more helpful to really consider in good faith why an informed person might disagree with you. It will help you see if there are any holes in your argument and if not will strengthen your confidence in what you say.

MonsieurCrapeau · 13/11/2023 22:01

Or Maybe Israel should stick to internationally agreed boundaries and stop occupying land illegally, planting settlers there and subjecting indigenous ethnic groups to military rule there? Is that also a fair statement?

This is both racist and inaccurate. Jews cannot be ‘white supremacists’ no matter where they come from. They are a distinct ethnic group and are not Caucasian. In addition, huge numbers of Israelis, perhaps a majority, are of middle-eastern origin.

It’s very interesting that the Jews are the only ethnic group in the world who are not allowed a homeland. That’s racism.

It’s not true that every other ethnic group has a homeland. There is a long list of people who do not have homelands: Kurds, Tamils, Uyghur, Zulu, Tibetan, various Native American groups etc are just a small number of the long list of people who do not have a ‘homeland’ in which they have majority rule. Even the Welsh for example do not have an independent homeland state. Should people be displaced in every case where an ethnic group is stateless in order to ensure every ethnic group has a homeland? Will you be happy to give up your home and move to a new area in order to give land to one of these stateless groups - surely it would be racist of you not to ‘allow’ them a homeland?

They absolutely can.
many Jews are white.

Tell that to the Palestinians. They are losing their homeland to jewish settlers in the west bank and being wiped out in Gaza.

Why should I reiterate everything the other poster said? She’s given one side, I’m giving the other.

and it’s perfectly ok to ask people to educate themselves - to read up more on the conflict and understand it better. I’m not here to present a water tight argument, or check for holes in my own. This isn’t a court case going on here. We’re a bunch of people talking about a topical issue on Mumsnet.

Jewish people can't be Caucasian? And Israel is the Jewish homeland. People are a bit pissed off about it, not because they are antisemites, but recent events have highlighted that this 'homeland' has come at a great cost to the life of the people who were living there.
