Thousands leave Gaza City after Israel leaflet drop urges them to

BBC news verify tonight.

Thousands of Palestinian people leaving Gaza City on foot. Lots of movement.

Israel has been dropping leaflets urging they move south. Thousands are doing so safely.

They are taking on Hamas and pleased that people are moving so not to be caught up in the fighting. People are walking in their thousands.

One lady said they walked past tanks 'from both sides'.

"Fighting" is an odd term indeed for indiscriminate bombing by an advanced military force of a densely packed civilian area.

HappierTimesAhead · 08/11/2023 20:03

The thing that has really got me tonight was the images of Palestinian children waving white flags as they walked past Israeli tanks. They shouldn't have to do that. It's heartbreaking.

I'm glad they are getting out. Better out than stay with Hamas there fighting.

They are showing Hamas missile sights in residential buildings, next to a swimming pool and tunnel entrances all over thd place mixed in the residential areas.

I'm hoping they clear the area. Seal the tunnels and eventually move Palestinian people back again if a new government can take over.

Hamas and Israel's army are fighting. Lots of relief that thousands and thousands of people are moving. I hope masses of aid can be brought in to them urgently.

The Palestinian people will need lots of help to rebuild their country.

If they're allowed back in. Which I don't think is the plan.

Namesbeenchanged · 08/11/2023 20:19

Diplomats suggested that Hamas cannot be part of any plan moving forward.

Hoping that an international agreement can be made. Including no forceable removal of people or long term occupation so Palestinian people can return.

Bless your naivety. It is unlikely that Gaza will be rebuilt for Palestinians under Israeli rule. More likely to become a beach resort.
And what has happened to the previous thousands of people who have moved to refugee camps in the past few weeks and been bombed to hell?

Better to wave a white flag and escape with their life than not do so and be killed.

Obviously you're guessing, surely it's good news that people are moving away from the fighting? Can you see no light or hope at all? There is always hope.

What about those who can’t leave? You have to be pretty physically able to leave on foot. And I hope at least they stop bombing the south.

This was my thinking. Ukrainian people got out on mass. MILLIONS moved into Poland and surrounding countries. Move, be safe and then work on a better future.

I understand that some would have them stay and be martyrs for the Hamas cause. The leaders are safe in other countries so the civilians shouldn't be left there!

OP posts:
Namesbeenchanged · 08/11/2023 20:28

Interestingly Hamas are not happy with people moving to safety. Hamas have made a statement that 'the UN is involved in the forced evacuation of Gaza City'. Do they not want their civilians to be safe!!!!!!!! Beggars belief.

Ukraine wanted their civilians to be moved from.harms way so the army could fight. Hamas appears not to want that!!!!

@Namesbeenchanged maybe you shouldn't start threads about things that you know nothing about. Or maybe you're pretending to be clueless I'm not sure.

What you are looking at is ethnic cleansing. These people are stateless so if they did somehow manage to leave the country like the Ukrainians did, they can never go back.

They can't leave Gaza though, so they are all being squashed down into the bottom 30% of the strip in Rafah and Khan Younis. And those cities are also being bombed so they're not moving to safety.

Don't you think that the country bombing them should take some responsibility for this?

... when people watch ethnic cleansing live on TV and genuinely think it is some sort of a "good" or "humanitarian" thing!

OP, you are watching a war crime in action!

I felt chills running down my spine as I was watching those people - on foot (they do have cars, you know, there is just no fuel left!) waving white flags, marching towards the South (which has been heavily bombarded, you know). Scared and starved into abandoning their homes with only what they could carry!

I have seen such pictures before. They were all in my history books, back when I was a mere school girl. None of the accompanying texts was a happy story!

Better to flee and live.
Ukrainian people also left enmass since advisable to do so? Why shouldn't Palestinian people do the same.
Heck do people really think they should sit tight with Hames and Israel fighting street to street around them. Surely any saving of civilian life's is better

That's definitely the thing they're running from. Hmm

And Ukraine was completely different. Which means you're either not informed enough to comment, or willfully deceitful.

Alifestylechoice · 08/11/2023 20:47

Good. I hope Hamas are wiped off the face of the planet and the people can return home under the new proposed Palestinian Authority government.

Tell me you do not know the first thing about the Israeli Palestinian conflict without telling me!

I could write an essay on "how wrong, on how many levels" this is - but I have just done so, on another thread, on a different side-topic! I will leave this to someone else!

Summary: there is nothing either new or great about the so-called Palestinian Authority! (And, for the record: I despised Hamas before it was cool!)

The difference, as you must know, is that Ukrainians could leave Ukraine and other countries were happy to take them, and they have a good chance of being able to go back.

People in Gaza aren't allowed leave the enclave, those who can walk are walking to the bottom part of the strip which is also being bombed and they may never be allowed go back to their homes if they survive the rest of this bombing campaign.

PostOpOp · 08/11/2023 20:57

One lady said they walked past tanks 'from both sides'.

That was a mistranslation. They may have had tanks in both sides, but Hamas doesn't have tanks, which is kind of the point of all these Israeli manoeuvres. So she was saying there were enemy tanks on both sides of her. Not comfortable either.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/11/2023 20:57

@HeidiInTheBigCity I'm also starting to lose the will to examine the 27000 reasons people are talking bollocks. But I'm aware that lurkers, people who couldn't find Gaza on a map, those who don't have the faintest idea that there were issues before October will see people like the OP opining and think it's true.

It's exhausting.

No, Hamas won't be destroyed, a new lovely democratic government won't be installed, and the IDF will not go back, never shooting, illegally detaining or harassing civilians again, stopping their own people encroaching, murdering and taking land. NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS. And again, OP either knows that and is lying, or is woefully ignorant and uninformed.

Fleeing from Israel then. I dont assume they support Hamas so from the fighting generally. I am guessing that many just want to be safe and keep children safe and are very scared. I have no idea what they think, just hope that aid, food, medical supplies are there for them. I've never been in a war zone thankfully.

Ukraine is different in many ways but getting civilians out meant less civilians die!!! I understand now that Ukraine is pushing Russia back many civilians have or are returning

ALL OF THIS!

Ethnic cleansing is NOT humanitarian. People who went south before got bombed. People IN the south got bombed (40% of bombings are in the south).

Do you know how long it takes to walk south?

Do you know they're not allowed to take their belongings?

This journey is too hard for many frail people. So they're just sitting at home/in the ruins of their homes waiting to die.

Soooooo humanitarian!

maybe you shouldn't start threads about things that you know nothing about.

People can start threads and discuss whatever they want to, whatever their level of “knowledge” around the subject matter. Also not agreeing with your opinions doesn’t mean they “know nothing”. No one knows the full story, not even sanctimonious MNetters sat on their laptops in Slough.
